FZS600 Fazer / Ignition switch circuit on bikes
« on: 16 January 2020, 07:45:38 pm »
If you look on the wiring diagram for the Fazer and for most bikes from what I can see the main power wire runs from the battery, through the main fuse then to the ignition switch, then from the ignition switch to the fuse box and from the fuse box it runs to all the other circuits through the various fuses. That means the ignition switch and the connectors and wiring to it have to take the full switched current for the whole bike. If you have a fault on that circuit like the common burnt connector going to the ignition caused by a poor connection in the connector or high resistance in the ignition switch from old age and wear and tear, the voltage to everything drops including the ignition coils so you would have weaker spark. So the question is why do they design it like that where the ignition switches all the current? Would it not make more sense if the ignition switched a relay and the relay powered the fuse box? That way the ignition switch only passes a tiny current or is there a reason why they use the ignition switch to switch the current and they don't use a relay?

FZS600 Fazer / Mistake on the 98 wiring diagram?
« on: 12 July 2019, 06:52:19 pm »
If you look at the ignition in the 98 wiring diagram http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=8
The diagram shows a connection between the blue wire coming off the ignition and the black wire going between the alarm and the ignitor. Is that connection a mistake?

General / Old measuring equipment
« on: 18 March 2019, 12:14:54 am »
I'd like to get some measuring equipment for using on bike engines. There's a lot of old used Mitutoyo micrometers and the likes for sale on ebay. My question for anyone who's experienced using measuring equipment is, would it be a waste of money buying old measuring equipment since you don't know how well it's been looked after or does good quality measuring equipment generally stay in spec? I was thinking about buying an old set of micrometers and then getting them checked with slip gauges. Is that a waste of money? Do you need new ones for checking engines?

FZS600 Fazer / Basic Electrical Theory
« on: 16 October 2018, 10:39:14 pm »
I think understanding electrics is the hardest part of diy mechanics so a thread on basic electrical theory might be useful for people ;) To get a good understanding of the basic theory I’d recommend reading chapter one of this site https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/textbook/direct-current/

Here’s my quick explanation of Voltage, Current and Resistance. To understand electrics you have to look at the atom. Atoms have positively charged protons at their centre in the nucleus and negatively charged electrons orbiting around the outside of the nucleus. This is shown below in an atom of Copper

The Protons are held in the nucleus with a lot of force. The electrons orbit around the outside of the nucleus and are held with far less force. This means that electrons can move from one atom to another atom. Since the electron has a negative charge the atom that loses the electron becomes relatively more positively charged and the atom that gains the electron becomes more negatively charged.

In nature atoms want to be in a Neutral state meaning that they want to have an equal number of positive protons and negative electrons. Because of this when one atom is positively charged from losing an electron and the other atom is negatively charged from gaining an electron a force is created between the two atoms that attracts the atoms together. This “pushing” force is called Voltage. So Voltage is a force that is caused by a difference in electrical charge between two points and it’s caused by one point being more negatively charged and the other point being more positively charged. A battery creates this difference in charge through a chemical reaction. The negative side of the battery has an excess of negative electrons and the positive side of the battery has a lack of electrons so a Voltage “pushing force” is created between the two points.

When a conductor is applied between the positive and negative points of the battery a Current flows. Current is the continuous, uniform flow of electrons through a conductor caused by a Voltage “pushing” electrons from the negative side to the positive side.
A conductor is a material that allows electricity through it easily. Conductors allow electricity to flow easily because they have a single electron in the most outer orbit of their atom that they lose easily, called a free electron. Here is a short video on copper that explains how conductors work

Resistance is opposition to the flow of current. Resistance is caused by collisions between the electrons and the atoms. Higher resistance means more collisions. Collisions cause the atoms to gain energy and vibrate this energy is given off in the form of heat energy. In some materials no electrons are free to move so no current flows these are insulators.

This is an excellent video that explains everything that I typed. Definitely watch it

I'm a newb to electrics but I think what I wrote is correct and might be useful to other newbs. I'll do another post on basic circuits and Voltage drop. Then on reading wiring diagrams and how the electrical components on a bike work. Once you get your head around the basics the rest becomes clear.

FZS600 Fazer / How does the ignition advance work?
« on: 05 August 2017, 09:40:42 pm »
This is embarrassing to admit but purely out of interest I had a look at the 600 wiring diagram (because that's how boring I am :lol ). I marked in all the power wires in red and grounds in blue. I've done the whole loom except the wires associated with the ignition advance. I'm not sure what's happening between the pickup coil, tps and speedo sensor. I could have a stab at it but I'm not 100% sure so I was wondering if anyone could explain those components and the signals they send out? ;)

The wiring diagram I'm looking at is on the last page of this manual http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=8
And I'm looking at the wires in and out of components 14, 15 and 17.

FZS600 Fazer / C2 bearings
« on: 31 July 2017, 03:34:56 pm »
I bought some wheel bearings a good while ago and I just noticed they are C2 bearings instead of C3 :groan I know that means they have a smaller internal clearance.  There's only a few microns in the difference. Would that cause an issue?

General / National Mileage Register
« on: 12 October 2016, 11:55:01 pm »
I'm looking at possibly buying a bike. I did a HPI check on it and it came up with a potential mileage discrepancy which has thrown a spanner in the works. It said that the bike had 120,000 miles and the mileage shown on the bike is way lower than that. Unfortunately there's no previous MOTs with it to prove the mileage but judging by the condition of the bike there's no way in my opinion it's done 120,000 miles. I was wondering how accurate is the National Mileage Register? Where do they get their mileage from?

General / Is your main bike a Fazer?
« on: 03 May 2016, 02:28:03 pm »
I'm asking because someone stuck up a post saying they're leaving the site because they sold their Fazer. To me that's silly. I've a feeling that a good percentage of people on here don't have a Fazer or they might have one but use another bike as their main bike.

Would it be possible to have a "todays posts" section that showed the most recent posts from all the different sections in the one place? And it just link to the other sections rather than being an area that you post in. Say a page of the most recent posts. That way sections that get over looked like people introducing themselves will get more exposure and people will mix more rather than staying in the same sections all the time.

FZS600 Fazer / Got cracked fairings?
« on: 23 April 2014, 12:28:26 pm »
Try q bond it works great. It's a plastic filler powder and a glue that react together and make really strong joins. It's simple to use way easier than plastic welding. You just open out the crack, then add the filler powder into it, then drip the glue on, let it dry and sand it flat. Works great and it's really strong
