Hi, do I need a special did rivet pin to fit a did vx chain rivet? I will get verniers in it tomorrow but to be honest I don’t think there has been much movement.
I noticed there wasn’t too Much displacement on the pin heads when I nipped them up last week. I then checked the did pdf sheet on line and it states this special rivet pin must be used. The did tool is very expensive on eBay.
The standard tool that I used appeared a bit damaged after use, see photo.

their dont need to be much as long as it spreads enough to stop the plate from coming off

Hi I think if you've used the bike for a week and the chain hasn't came off yet it'll be fine :)
I put mine on with a g clamp and a centre punch and it's still holding after 4K

Aye. A short fat object that I could fit in my eBay rivet tool would do the job. Just enough to splay the soft rivets would work...will see what they have at work. I think the standard rivet tool fitted inside the concave bit of the rivet so did not have much effect. Might even have something in the garage...

Would not a well aimed blow from a Ball Payne hammer on the back heel of a heavy engineering vice not suffice?

Certainly would though I’d rather squish it in situ to avoid taking it past the swing arm and buying and engineering vice or anvil 😃. Attached is a photo of current state. I suspect they will do. Pain in the arse all this special tool mularkey.

I read an article recently, can't remember where though, that recommended measuring the diameter of the soft link before it's installed. The rivetting tool, whatever type you choose, then needs to increase the diameter by •5mm. Your photo looks good enough. The Whale rivetter is most commonly used in the trade. Fortunately I can borrow one from a bike mech pal, as they're around the 90 quid mark , so a bit hard to justify that sort of expense, unless you've got a garage full of bikes with knackered chains. :lol

I am not quite sure what was wrong with the flat sideplate and clip fixings of yesteryear, as long as you put the closed end of the clip facing the direction flow of the drive chain they were fine. I have done more than 50 miles on motorcycles over the years and never had one come off or undone.
It would be interesting to find out if any of the lads in here have ever had a chain come off because the clip came undone, not chain snap but the clip actually came undone.

Wow, a whole 50 miles, thats probably less than a mile a year :rollin :rollin , you need to get out more :D
On a serious note I think the clips were phased out as they were not capable of handling the increased power of modern bikes.
I once went to look at a GSX750 and on inspecting the chain found two clips about 10 links apart, not a good idea!

I think the soft links were introduced with the advent of O ring chains. The spring clips weak point is its lateral strength which is imperitive with modern chains which have inbuilt lubrication. With a regular non O ring type chain a spring link would be fine, and lighter in weight.

Rivets checked out at 6.04 and 5.92 mm. am happy with that. Thanks for the table.
