Anyone done Hull-Rotterdam/Zeebrugge with their bike ?
« on: 23 January 2013, 03:16:21 pm »
Early days yet but having a squint at the website it's impossible to book 4 or 5 motorbike and one 4 or 5 berth cabin between you online. It wants to charge you all individually as having a 2 berth cabin each.

Anyone had any joy booking a group on this crossing ?

In general, the ferry companies assume that each vehicle is a completely separate booking. If I were you, I'd try ringing the ferry company directly and asking them.

les i live in hull around 5 miles from ferry if i can help in anyway but you are prob best ring them to discuss your deals,iv been across a few times both as foot passanger and car but never bike, its usually expensive compared to the ferrys down south but they can do good deals if you time it right and depends on where you live and want to go as if its better to go from hull or another ferry

I went across last year with my dad. Two motorbikes and a 2 berth cabin. I think he rang them to make the booking rather than over the Internet. More expensive than Dover but when you live in Huddersfield, it's a bit of a hack down the motorways to get there. We came back via Calais/Dover.

For your info, 4 blokes, 4 bikes, sharing a 4 berth cabin was £449.50 return

It's overnight, so you have to book a berth, that's how they get you.

It's 90 quid or so in juice to Dover and back for us, and probably 30 quid to Hull and back. So if you knock the 60 quid saving off the £114 each your into £54 return for the ferry in reality, not sure what Dover to France is any more but the cheapest I ever got it was £35 return, so all in all it still makes sense.

Plus avoid the soul destroying ride home from Dover. It's not so bad on the way out cos' your going on your holidays and are all up for it.

Done it once on the bikes,  and obviously never again,  but to me apart from being way more expensive,  you also lose two days biking abroad.  I usually went via Dover and enjoyed more time abroad.

Know where your coming from. We usually meet at 6am, ride to Dover for the 2ish ferry, get into France then pretty much only do 40 or 50 miles and find somewhere to stay cos' everyone's knackered by then.

If you don't count the hour or 2 in a foreign land on the first day it's pretty much the same, leave Saturday, wake up Sunday in a foreign land on yer holidays  :D

I nearly always used an Ibis hotel in St.Omer but also managed to get a good 120 miles into France on one occasion.  I just preferred to dine in France than on the ferry!

I think its the oposite, leave work friday afternoon catch the friday night boat and you arrive in Holland or Belgium after (hopefully) a good nights sleep around 7am (after a full breakfast on board)  :D  . You sometimes get pond life on board though. pissed up and making noise in the cabin area. I actually prefer the Harwich ferry as they were brand new boats in 2011

Used to do the run regularly in the band, before the wall came down, to play on the bases. We were the pond life you speak about :lol

I've also taken the mantle of ferry bound pond life in the past and thoroughly enjoyed myself

We tend to cut loose on the ferry it's sort of first night of the trip, 4 lads in a small cabin full of beer and grub is hard going, we keep the door open you need the constitution of a horse to get through the night

For what its worth Les talk about the trip down to Dover being soul destroying  :rolleyes l ve done fast/cruise ferries Poole - Cherbourg , cruise ferry Dover - Calais/Dunkirk and the Plymouth-Santander overnight ferry, never do that 24 hrs route again !  Now that is soul destroying and mega boring, l d much rather pay more for petrol n digs, choose a scenic route through France than sail to Santander again and hey theres some great roads down to Dover onto the Eurotunnel and hey no hassle, cheap n easy to get into Europe that way  :D
Still got the Hornet ;-)

Hey Mick, long time :D  There are some good routes to Dover but what time would we have to leave to get there ? I don't want to stay in Dover, it's a dump that's why we get the ferry at 2ish and get into France for the first night.

To be honest 24 hours on a ferry with a bar would be part of the holiday to me.

How ya doing Les ?  :eek yes l'm still alive n kicking, regards the trip down to Dover/Calais or Poole/Cherbourg l set off from Bolton around 6am and use the roads rather than motorway, stop a few times for a brew/snack to catch an early afternoon ferry. Get off in France around 5pm their time, travel upto 40 miles then stop for the night and make a full day of it the following day. As for the bar on a ferry Les  :\ nah you wouldn t want to spend too long at one, though maybe if you had enough money, got bladdered you could pass a few of the 24 hrs crashed out in a corner somewhere  :lol Have to catch up sometime Les, you at the spring meet 2013?
Still got the Hornet ;-)
