Diesels and Lawnmowers (Bike racing n things) / Re: joke moto gp
« on: 27 August 2018, 05:41:49 am »
Time for me to have a rant...

They steal the traditional date for BSB at Cadwell Park so they got what they deserve. I didn't go just because of this and after it got cancelled I am a whole lot happier that I didn't coff out all that dosh.

I think cricket fans often get a half price refund if rain stops play but pretty sure that MotoGP don't. It's a lot of money to lose. I know that the 'circus' has to get rolling to the next circuit and maybe it's all down to booking times for shipping.

After all the glorious dry weather we have had this summer it is very sad to see the GB round cancelled. If only they had gone for an earlier date instead of nicking Cadwell Park's weekend...

No. You can chop a bit off if there is going to be enough left. Any repairs would soon leak.
For a small bit of pipe like that it isn't going to be very expensive to replace.

No need to be baffled. It's a pipe, they don't last forever. Splits can happen for no apparent reason.
At least you've found it before it got really bad.

I once had a girlfriend that didn't like bikes. She didn't last long.
Now I have a wife that loves bikes and she had her own 125 for a few years. I rarely ride my own bike solo.
I could not imagine my life without a bike but if that day comes it will be my choice.

As your wife has other issues you can bet that once your bike has gone she will pick on some other part of your life and give you hell over that. I've been there, I've faced those anger issues. I walked away when she tried to strangle me in my sleep and I don't even foccin know what the hell I was supposed to have done! She followed me around for weeks afterwards, turning up in the most unlikely of places. She eventually got tired of stalking me. I found out that she got married on exactly the same day as me - to my sister in laws brother... So now I am related to the stupid foccin cow!!!

Best of luck in whatever you choose to do.

I met the exact opposite a couple of years ago when I started a new job driving lorries.
The bloke was quite well built and looked tough. His Mrs was also a lorry driver who worked for the same firm, quite small and thin.
I noticed that every so often he turned up to work with bruises on his face and one day a real good black eye.
Turned out that his Mrs was hitting him. She was also very good at verbal abuse too.
Despite the rest of us telling him to leave (and he agreed that he needed to) he just never took the plunge.

She wasn't anything special. I didn't like her at all. We just couldn't see why he stayed. He's still with her now.
Thankfully I don't work with them now.

So weird though how it’s just rusted away.

They do that. I'm surprised you only had trouble with one.
When you've found a good fitting socket try heating the nut with a blow torch, just don't forget it's hot and burn your fingers when you put the socket on.
Socket with pins is your 2nd to last resort. Dremel or nut splitter (hammer and chisel) is your last one!

Try a British size socket - I think a 3/8ths inch is slightly smaller than a 10mm.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: From FZS600 to VFR800 instead of FZS1000?
« on: 19 August 2018, 06:17:45 am »
It's merely the difference between a 600 and a heavier 1000 Tommy.
If I wanted a bike purely for scratching around the back lanes I would choose the 600.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: From FZS600 to VFR800 instead of FZS1000?
« on: 18 August 2018, 06:03:22 pm »
600's are great bikes. The thou is even better. You don't have to work the engine so hard for overtakes, far less gear changing in all conditions and a more planted feel when cornering. Yes it is slightly less nimble than a 600 but after you've got used to the Thou you won't want to go back. I've got the Gen 1 and I can't really fault it. So great to ride fast or slow. Nice comfy seat so you can ride for long distances.

As for the VFR... like others have said it is a Honda. Great bike but seems to do everything so well it becomes boring. You know it's going to be reliable if it's looked after. The paintwork and mechanics will be good because it's a Honda. I've not owned one but I have ridden one. I liked it but not enough to buy it.

General / Re: Historic Vehicle MOT Exemption

Would have been handy for when I had my BSA.
Apart from the negligible cost of an MOT and the faff of organising a suitable MOT appointment I don't mind taking my bike for test. At least a fresh pair of eyes can see things that I miss or ignore.

If you want a bike that goes like an R1 just buy an R1.

Ouch, that cost a bit but at least you're back on the road and if it goes better than the old engine that can't be a bad thing.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Battery or Something else?????
« on: 10 August 2018, 06:20:24 pm »
Make sure the battery leads/connections are clean and tight.

One day my bike didn't start - with a great deal of force I could just wiggle the positive battery lead. That was enough to start it. Got home and really cleaned the connections, no problems since.

But get the battery checked out anyway - if it looks old then it is probably time for a new one (I know this statement isn't very technical but if you rely on your bike as transport you've got to be sure it's going to start).

It is not a fixed 10%+2mph across all the police forces. It varies across the country. MCN did a freedom of information thing on this very subject a couple of years ago and got a lot of varying answers.

Well done.

I struggle to see my speedo too  :eek
Even with reading glasses I find the numbers too small. I'd love a digital speedo like that but I can't see it happening.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Gen 2 gearing
« on: 05 August 2018, 09:50:48 pm »
Altering the gearing doesn't make a lot of difference to mpg if at all. I've done it on other bikes and not noticed any difference. I have altered the gearing to make the revs sit better at my usual cruising speed but as I have a Gen 1 it might have little in common with your gearing.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Gen. 2 wheels in a Gen.1?
« on: 04 August 2018, 05:31:03 am »
This is the problem with one off stuff. I found it very difficult to get any engineering firm to make up any bits I needed. They're either too busy or just not interested. I did find one firm but they're long gone now.

It's not the battery. With those voltages you would at least get a neutral light. So it's either a connector has got gunged up/corroded/come apart.

Hi Keith,
there's always a few decent Fazers up for sale - a couple of very nice ones just recently. It all depends on your budget. They're still a damn good bike.

General / Re: How much does a Fazer engine weigh?
« on: 03 August 2018, 03:36:59 pm »

Lifting with straps may be harder than just picking it up and carrying it - as long as it's a short distance. Otherwise get a set of wheels. It all depends on how near you can get to the workshop door.

it actually only arrived yesterday, so I might not get it back until next Tuesday :(

Sods Law!

« on: 03 August 2018, 03:31:55 pm »
I'm looking at the wiring instructions & thinking I've bitten off a very large chunk of headache pie!

One wire at a time. Don't try to rush the job.

Draw a diagram of the wires on your bike noting the colours and what they do, then just match up the new wires. If you draw a diagram/table it will be easier to follow when connecting the wires up. It will also be very useful to keep for the future.

Might be cheaper to buy a new bike!
