« on: 22 October 2015, 11:39:38 am »

FZS600 Fazer / 7000 RPM Stutter
« on: 18 October 2015, 06:15:13 pm »
Hi guys, Haven't been on for a while hope everyone is well. Finally got the bike MOT'd after my issues with the ignition electrics (sidelights not working) and it's developed a stutter.

It's strange because if I ease the revs up it'll go past the 7000 mark with no issues (most of the time) if I open it up quickly it's guaranteed to stutter. On the flat it'll work it's way up slowly through the revs but it's like a bad misfire.

I've had the plugs out and give them a clean and they seem to be sparking OK, I changed the air filter as it hadn't been done in yonks but still the same. The rubbers on the carb seem pretty badly cracked so I'm thinking it's sucking in air through here when the revs are peaking but low revs not enough pressure to take in the air like I say normally problematic around 7000 and sometimes around 4000. My theory is just that a theory can anybody give some suggestions on how I could check this? Also I imagine the inlet rubbers will be pricey anyone know of deals/cheap fixes?

Thanks guys.

FZS600 Fazer / Best Method for Cleaning Carbs
« on: 15 August 2014, 11:35:58 pm »
As the title says really guys. I know how to get the carbs out and I had the number 1 carb apart following Haynes manual, just wondering how I should clean them and what should I use. Any possible problems or adjustments I'm gonna need to watch out for?

FZS600 Fazer / Carburettor Gasket Advice
« on: 10 August 2014, 12:21:55 pm »
So I ordered a bran new pack of gaskets for the float bowl for the fzs and my wonderful girlfriend in all her wisdom, had a tidy up and threw an "empty" envelope containing the brand spanking new gaskets, but don't worry it's my fault not my wonderful girlfriends. You may be able to tell I'm a little focced off.

My question is the carb I stripped and used the old gasket is leaking, if I strip it and put some of the blue liquid gasket shite on the old gasket would that be any good. Or shall I order another set and lock them in a safe until I can commence work on the bike.

FZS600 Fazer / My nightmare continues; this time it's the carbs
« on: 28 July 2014, 08:41:22 pm »
I've been hounded by problems the last few weeks, it started with my sidelights not working due to a wire coming out of the ignition, sorted that. Throttle cable stick and not returning, think I've solved that. Checked my cam chain tensioner and found it was missing the 2 ball bearings, managed to source these, sorted that. Now I've put it back together gone to start and noticed petrol peeing out of the number 1 carb (left hand side as sat on bike).

Now when I had the carbs off I decided to open up the carb to give a little clean. I only ended up doing the number 1 carb because of a combination of soft metal screws and ridiculously tight screws. They were pretty focced by the previous owner but most of them are looking a little worse for wear now. I put it back together and like a tool that I am decided that "nah the gasket will be fine", it's not. I'm pretty sure that'so where the petrol is leaking :(

So I've learnt an important lesson always change gaskets and whatever the foc happens don't bother if the screw starts slipping.

I've now got to source some new screws for the carburettor and gaskets. I've seen some on ebay, but I'm honestly starting to lose interest at the moment. Feel like just getting second hand carbs and putting them in save the hassle.

Any tips on getting rounded and very tight screws out? I seen something in halfords called shock and unlock, any good?

Even though I've had a nightmare I've learnt some new skills on the bike though to be fair so I'll try to stay positive :)

FZS600 Fazer / Throttle Sticky
« on: 25 July 2014, 07:37:54 pm »
Hey guys,

I fixed my electrical wiring problems but after I've put it back together the throttle is really stiff and doesn't snap back. The handle bars were displaced for about a week I'm thinking that when they've not been under tension something's gone a bit wrong. I've checked the cable and re-seated it in the holder thing at the carb end.

Any ideas what to do or how to get some WD40 in there?

FZS600 Fazer / Replace/Repair Ignition Barrell?
« on: 18 July 2014, 03:21:59 pm »
So I had my bike booked or an MOT. Went out just to check lights and stuff, and noticed that some of the lights weren't working.

Sidelights nothing front or rear. Checked the bulbs but thought unlikely for all three to go. Checked for voltage at bulb holders - nothing. Looked under tank and no visibly loose connections undid them and clicked back in. I checked the continuity from the large white connector under tank to the front bulb holder and that was fine. Couldn't identify where the connector was for the rear holders. Checked the fuses that I know of under the seat.

Please someone tell me there's a secret fuse or something I really don't want to have to pull all the wiring out.

Any help be appreciated.

FZS600 Fazer / Front Master Cylinder Screws
« on: 07 July 2014, 10:43:47 pm »
Hey peeps, changed my pads and brake fluid the other day and one of the screws on the master cylinder is shagged, pretty much rounded off. Anybody got any spare ones or where I can get some?

FZS600 Fazer / Just how bad is the rear brake?
« on: 19 June 2014, 11:37:54 pm »
Changed my chain today and while it was apart I noticed one of my pistons was seized on the rear caliper, anyway many fiddly hours later the brakes are back together and on the bike. It works but it's crap to say the least, it's never been much good. I can't get the rear to lock up if I stamp on it (not that I want to but you know what I'm getting at. Are they just this bad anyway? Or should I strip and replace all the seals and stuff? I bled the brakes and there was no air comin through, do I need to bleed them more? Should the wheel just spin freely as I can hear a little bit I friction from the pads? The pads look quite old to be fair maybe I'll get a new set.

FZS600 Fazer / Not Starting After Sprocket Cover Removal
« on: 10 June 2014, 09:54:52 am »
I'm confused, I've had the sprocket cover off to replace the sprocket nut as it had come loose. I've put it back together after a week of not using it and it cranks but will not start. After playing around with it over and over eventually it started, I thought that would be it but same again this morning and when I got to work I turned it off switched straight back on and again same, it wouldn't start. I'm hoping it'll start when I finish later!
The only things I've done to get it started are playing with the sidestand, cranking over and over and pulling in the clutch but there isn't one of those things that solves the problem it just seems to go eventually. I'm was thinking maybe it's the sidestand switch but would it not crank if thats the case? Anyway I can bypass or test this?

FZS600 Fazer / Sprocket Nut Focced
« on: 01 June 2014, 07:14:38 pm »
Hey people, so my rear hugger was knackered and a chunk had cracked off and gone forwards towards the sprocket housing, no bilgy whipped the hugger off and removed the broken bit from the housing. I thought I'd bester remove the sprocket cover to check that no little bits had gone into it. This is where it gets interesting, since I've had the bike I've had no reason to remove the sprocket housing and so I was interested to see what the sprocket but would look like having read that they're problematic. The sprocket nut just spun around I literally just pulled it off the spindle, there is no thread whatsoever on the nut and I can see a rub mark on the inside of the cover where it has been rubbing. So the only thing holding mine chain on was the thickness of the nut against the sprocket cover  :eek .

I'm not gonna ride it until I've got a nut on here and I'm gonna take the opportunity to replace the chain and sprockets. I'm worried now though because there is not thread on this nut and I'm thinking has the previous owner had a problem with it and just chucked on a bigger nut and reamed the inside out. I've got some photos, do you think it's possible for the spindle to wear the inside out this cleanly? There is thread on the spindle but I hope the new nut will go on OK.

FZS600 Fazer / Rear Tyre Puncture
« on: 03 April 2014, 05:30:50 pm »
Got to work this morning and noticed a lovely screw/nail in the rear tyre  :groan it's just off the center of the wheel so I think it'll be repairable. Only put the new tyre on last month so I don't wanna bin it. I've rung a couple of places around me (Caerphilly/Cardiff area) and they don't do puncture repairs.
So 2 questions: Anyone know anywhere that does it? How easy is it to do it myself?

General / N103 Pinlock Fogging Up
« on: 28 March 2014, 11:25:07 am »
Hey, I've got a Nolan N103 helmet with the pinlock insert but with the visor closed it still fogs up if it's raining it gets pretty bad and then the rain gets in there when I open the visor and I'm screwed. I changed my pinlock a couple of months ago in the hope it would solve it. I thought Pinlock was supposed to be the shizzle! I don't find the airflow paarticulary good in the N103 but wouldn't have thought it'd fog up like this. Anybody have the same helmet or same problem with pinlock?

FZS600 Fazer / Spring Clean
« on: 24 March 2014, 10:58:38 pm »
Hi guys, so I'm pretty ashamed of my bike at the moment, it's bogging and needs a good clean. Some of the bikes on here look amazing so I'm wondering what do you guys use to clean your bikes and any tips for getting the awkward places like engine and wheels cleaned?

FZS600 Fazer / Something strange happening at tick over
« on: 24 March 2014, 02:44:08 am »
So I sorted my problem with the speedo and changed my oil and filter. Took the bike for a blast today and all going well. I stopped for 5 to text a mate and as I was stopped the revs occasionally would drop from 1000 down to 500ish stay there a little then go back up. It was doing this on and off. I've never noticed it before do you think it could be something simple like plugs? Or I've seen a lot of you guys talking about the TPS, could he related?

I took a video on my phone so if it'll help could post a link and upload it to YouTube.

Cheers.

FZS600 Fazer / Speedo Sensor Needed
« on: 04 March 2014, 12:30:37 pm »
So I'm riding in too work this morning and my speedo is basically bouncing all around the place. Seems to be reacting to my revs more than my speed, shooting up to 140mph (I wish) then back down just all over the place. After the engine warmed up it seemed to get a little better but still not right. I'm guessing that I've probably got a dodgy connection somewhere, anybody else had this happen?
Going to whip the tank off this weekend and check the connections until then I'll just freestyle it.

FZS600 Fazer / So it's Chain and Sprocket Time
« on: 03 March 2014, 03:02:04 pm »
Hey everyone, so it's time for me to get a new chain an sprockets, old chains at the limit now for adjustment. I've done a little looking on eBay and was thinking this chain an sprocket set from Busters (http://bit.ly/1mQaqAh), any thoughts?

What else am I going to need? I know there's a lot of talk about the up rated sprocket nut, where's the best place to get one? Any tips or possible pitfalls you guys are aware of?

FZS600 Fazer / Dodgy Hot Grips or problem with charging system?
« on: 14 November 2013, 12:52:52 am »
Hi, so I've got oxford hot grips, the ones that were on there originally were focced, I bought a control unit from ebay and all was working ok. Hot grips started playing up though resetting to the lowest blue led. Seemed as though this was when I'd hit a bump but not 100%.

Now I turn the power on for the grips I all I get is the 40% amber led blinking but so dim you can hardly see it. I'm thinking maybe there's not enough power when the engines running. I've noticed when I've got the brake on that the headlight will dim ever so slightly maybe there's too much load on the system? Any ideas how I can check this or any other ideas?

FZS600 Fazer / Lube me up
« on: 09 September 2013, 12:42:21 pm »
Ok, so chain lube. I've been using Wurth Dry chain lube but I'm almost out. With the weather getting wetter I'm wondering if there's some better alternative that'll deal with the wet weather.

Ideally would fit a Scott oiler but can't afford one at the moment.

I adjusted my chain yesterday, I can't believe the difference, there was about 60mm of slack, gear changes are so much smoother!

Also I've seen this anti corrosion stuff you spray on after washing the bike, is it any good? any recommendations?

FZS600 Fazer / Cam Chain Tensioner Reset/Replacement?
« on: 13 August 2013, 02:33:17 pm »
Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum had a look around a few times but just signed up for the first time.

I have FZS 600 '99, she's done about 32000 miles. I passed my big bike test about 2 weeks ago and loving the Fazer, just looking to look after her with some maintenance and hopefully she'll look after me.

My question is about the cam chain tensioner, from looking around I think I have a "sticky" tensioner as I'm getting a ticking noise from the engine. I'm thinking of taking a look at it this weekend but wondering how difficult is it to reset/replace the tensioner. I'm fairly competent when it comes to mechanics, no problem changing brake pads, adjusting chain, etc.

I have a Haynes manual which, I havn't checked yet for the tensioner but just hoping someone may have some little tips they want to pass on, I'd be more than grateful.

Cheers,

Tom  :D
