Previous owner of my bike did the same mod, and while the Speedo is OK, and reads in Kms (OK in D'Ould Sod), my fuel gauge starts at about due north when full, a good quarter measure beyond the graduations on the dial. It also meant that on the first long journey I did, I saw the fuel light come on with what I thought was a quarter tank still left.

That proved interesting :)

Hard luck mate, that's a right pain.
Hope you get it fully sorted.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Ohlins kit - what's in it?
« on: 30 December 2017, 09:29:52 pm »
Aye, that's what I suspect.

I don't think there is anything more than springs and oil, but the guy that did it may have ventured a bit further and made sure that the adjusters were cleaned up to make the action a bit smoother.

I've heard a few times about the adjuster needles being left a little rough, meaning that fine adjustments weren't always possible or effective.

A clean up and smoothing out can make a difference.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Ohlins kit - what's in it?
« on: 25 December 2017, 01:35:11 pm »
When I bought my 2005 FZs it had an Ohlins shock with remote preload and a sticker on the forks.

The forks are very good and seem to respond to rebound and compression changes, but all I can find online are oil and spring kits.

Is that all that is likely to be in it? Or were there other internals that could have gone into it?

Cheers,

LD

Aye, managed to source a cable repair kit and cobbled together something that worked.

Seems to be OK now, but will order a proper one when the festive madness has passed.

Also, I got a ScottOiler kit for my pressie - Score!

Well, after putting in the new battery, I got it started and figured out what was wrong.

The choke cable was broken.

So a combination of weak battery and broken choke cable left it with these symptoms.

Everyday is a school day!

@Hugh_Mungus
Yeah, that is a good point.
I doubt valves would go so far out literally over a few hours and uniformly across four cylinders.

Anyway, got a fancy lithium battery and a charger, so will pop that in this evening, but yes I would tend to agree it sounds like something else.

Fingers crossed.

Actually, I've noticed the ignition barrel has gotten very sticky again.
I had previously just soaked it in GT85 and it sorted it out. But, it is very sticky again.

Is it possible that it is not making some connection or doing so intermittently that might affect starting?

Right, have a can of GT85, don't need brake cleaner then.

Going to try a new battery anyway, as I said, it was a bit low so no harm.

Bike was in constant use, in fact the first time it happened was coming out of work having ridden it there that morning.

Fuel pump appears to be working, and when I took the outlet pipe off, it pumped away as it cranked.

Anyway, fired up my old road legal ZXR-R, so that will do for the next few days.

Thanks @Stet.

I have put a fuel booster into the fuel just in case I got a bad tank.

However, the battery is not great, so need a new one anyway.

Have not tried the spray into the intake. Need to get a can of brake cleaner - I've heard that will do :)

Has anyone heard of tight exhaust valve clearances causing these kinds of problems?

Has been suggested elsewhere but I've no experience with these engines so don't know enough about it.

Thanks @Agricola, tried that.

Took the feed pip to the carbs off at the pump and put on another bit of pipe and it is definitely pumping fuel.

I also undid the float drain from carb no.4 and loads of fuel came out, so I'm kind of baffled as to how the plugs appeared dry.

Bloody thing.

« on: 17 December 2017, 04:43:16 pm »
So, after 6 months of perfect running, my Fazer has become very hard to start.
2006 FZs 1000, 20k miles.

The battery turns it over just fine, and from cold, on full choke, it will catch for a second, but before it will idle, it dies. And then it will spin and spin and make no attempt to fire.

I checked the plugs (CR9E) and they look like they have been there for a long time but were a good colour, sort of grey to tan with no soot and dry.

I thought it a good idea to change them anyway, so a set of iridiums went in this afternoon, but still the same.

I took out the air filter and it is dirty, but not blocked by any means.

I tried it without the air filter too, just the airbox lid on and same behaviour.

I also took no. 1 HT lead off and put in one of the old plugs and turned it over with the plug on the cylinder head and the spark looked good.

Am I missing anything obvious?

Cheers,

LD

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Gen 1 odometer to kms?
« on: 06 July 2017, 01:30:41 pm »
There is no option, or hidden menu, to switch the odometer to km (at least to my knowledge). Only way is to re-program the eeprom inside the cluster. If you manage to get hold of such a programmer I can provide you the according hex-file/data.

Right you are.

Will see what the possibilities are .

LD

Just change speed to mph easy to do less than £20. I did mine in white and now can see speed at a glance, so much better than black. Just msg them and tell them you want mph. Doesn't take long to do.  http://www.cartestsoftware.com/fz1/whitegaugegraphics.html

Thansk for that, but its the other way I need to go.

It's a UK market bike that was imported to Ireland by the previous owner.
We have km speed limits, so I'd like the speedo and odometer to be in km.

After my first full week of usage, I got 47mpg for mainly motorway commute on a  Gen 1.

Fairly happy with that.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Gen 1 odometer to kms?

if its a Gen 1 that has analogue clocks. The fact that the main scale is in Km tells me someone has changed the dials so you are unlikely to be able to change the odo to Km
#
Thanks mate.

They are the analogue clocks with the digital sub-displays.

The speedo definitely reads in km/h, so I think it is more than just a fascia change. Just seems a bit odd that a UK bike would be km on the speedo with miles on the odometer.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Gen 1 odometer to kms?
« on: 04 July 2017, 02:37:48 pm »
All right chaps and chapettes,

I have a UK market bike in Ireland (2005 Gen 1 FZS), with the speedo in km/h and the odometer in miles.

Is it possible to switch the odometer to kilometres too?

I have a PDF of the manual and function isn't mentioned.

I can set the clock with the Select and Reset button at the same time option, but nothing seems to get you into the ODO functions.

Cheers,

LD

Thanks all.

Very happy with it.

And despite vowing not to do anything but put a back tyre on it, I've already explored a set of ultra low Renthals.

« on: 28 June 2017, 10:24:35 am »
Just picked up my first Yamaha and first Fazer (Gen 1 thou), with full Ohlins internals front and rear shock.

I need to set proper sag all round and get things right, but even backing off the rear preload and a couple of clicks less compression front and rear has already made a difference for my style/taste.

Happy days.

« on: 28 June 2017, 10:03:11 am »
Howde all,
I have just become the proud owner of this beastie:

2005 FZS 1000
It has come with a fair few mods.

Akrapovic carbon end can, AIS gubbins and EXUP valve removed.

Ohlins internals forks and Ohlins shock with remote preload, crash bungs, LED rear lights with integrated indicators, colour coded bits and bobs, rad protector, heated grips, comfort seat.

It also has the FZ1 master cylinder for the front brake and braided hoses all round.

Full service history, and less than 15k miles. It's my first Yamaha, having had Kawasakis, Hondas and Ducatis over the years.

As for me, I'm not nearly as interesting, or modified, vastly higher mileage and live on the outskirts of Dublin.

Cheers,
Lord_D
