General / Foccer Font of Knowledge- IOM TT
« on: 06 July 2021, 09:45:41 pm »
So it's been an ambition of mine for a few years now to ride over to the IOM for the TT and now that I have a suitable bike I'm looking at what I need to be doing. The brother in law wants to come with and we would more than likely stay a couple of nights but I know nothing about where to start.
I'm aware that everything gets booked up fast so we are realistically looking at either 2023 or 2024.

So I'd just like some pointers from any fellow foccas that have attended in the past (or plan too in the future) as to the best way to go about it...travel, accommodation, rough costs etc etc
Cheers 🍻

General / Making up a cleaning kit
« on: 03 June 2021, 06:39:34 pm »
So having a faired bike again has reminded me how much of a pain in the ass they are to clean, and the fact its black in places is even worse. So I'm looking at putting together a really good cleaning kit. The best washes, polishes, waxes as well as brushes chamois etc etc
So I thought I'd ask you guys what you use, given that (without sounding rude) a lot of you guys are on the more mature side of things I trust that most of you have been using some of the same products for years so you would have good recommendations 😁
I mean I could just go out and spend my life savings on autoglym but I'd hazard a guess and say a £5 bottle of turtle wax is probably just as good as a £27 bottle of that 🤷‍♂️

So anyway partly because I could really use the advice and partly because it would be nice to have an actual topic that relates to biking on here 😝 would anyone be so kind as to offer up suggestions on good cleaning products
Thanks 👍🏻

General / Security chain advice
« on: 29 April 2021, 11:09:12 pm »
Hey I'm looking for a new chain as my Squire is started to get a bit long in the tooth. The cover has all but disintegrated and it's started to scratch  my bike wheels when using it.
Anyway I've been looking around at what seems to be the best and a few things keep popping up but I've got my eye on the Oxford beast 22mm with the Oxford beast lock. It's on offer st the minute for £202 for both which is great, I'm just wondering if a 20kg 22mm link chain is going to be a bit overkill? My current squire is only a 14mm chain and has always done the job so I'm wondering if it would be better to just stick to one of a similar size? Also means I wouldn't have to get a new ground anchor
But then the Oxford one is sold secure diamond rated so I'm thinking it might bring the insurance down a smidge 🤷‍♂️

Anyway does anyone have any input/advice that may help me choose which is the best option?

(Edit: fair point sharpie 👍🏻)

For Sale & Wanted / Few Gen 2 Bits for sale
« on: 01 April 2021, 04:24:03 pm »
Right seeing as my Fz1 has gone I have a few bits knocking about that I need rid of. Hopefully useful to someone here

A power commander 3 loaded with a custom map
£100 ± P&P

Pillion Seat for the Naked model (different seat to the Fazer model) these are very hard to find for some reason 🤷‍♂️
£50 + P&P

A black exhuast hanger
£10 + P&P

Original Levers
£10 + P&P

Abba Stand Adapters
£10 + P&P

I also have an original tail light lens. That can go for free if anyone needs one? Just P+P

And last of all I have a set of Oxford Saturn LED indicators. I have the full set of 4 but in all honesty 1 of them is a bit crap (it's usable but would need glueing) so I would be selling them as a set of 2 but throwing in the other 2 for nothing. They would also come with some resistors if wanted.
£15 +P&P

So if any good for anyone just drop me a message 👍🏻

General / Farewell Fazer
« on: 29 March 2021, 10:31:40 pm »
Well I finally bit the bullet and bought myself a Kawasaki Z1000sx today, which sadly means my time with the Fz1 has come to an end.
I will be sad to see it go, its been an immensely fun (and expensive) 5 years but it's just time for something slightly more practicality and a lot less "look at me" haha

I plan on sticking around (if you'll have me 😝) as 80% of my interactions on here have nothing to do with Fazers haha but also I'd like to hope that I've molded and messed about with enough parts of a gen2 that I'd still be able to offer some helpful advice to others 🙂

I think Ive got about 4 days until the Kwak comes so in the meantime I'm going to rummage through the garage and see which originals parts I have left to swap out so I may have some stuff in the for sale section soon

Anyway I look forward to enjoying the new stead 😌

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Clutch cover alignment help
« on: 24 March 2021, 05:11:52 pm »
Has anyone got any tips for getting the clutch cover on a gen2 back on properly?
I had a small leak coming from mine so I whipped it off earlier and installed a new gasket but now there is too much play in the cable 🙁 I hadn't adjusted or undone the cable at all so I know the problem has to be with the way I've put it back together.
I've checked the workshop manual, plus tried to find info on Google but nothing that's helped.
I've aligned all the marks like I was supposed too and have now had the cover off a further 4 times but to no avail.
I read online before had that it was meant to be a pain but this is just taking the piss 😤
I've had to give up for the day before I took a hammer to it, so I will be trying again tomorrow or Friday
Any advice would be greatly appreciated please

For Sale & Wanted / Price opinions?
« on: 17 March 2021, 10:11:19 am »
So I've decided I'm ready to move on from my Fz1n 😕. I've had it nearly 5 years now and although it's great in many ways I'm just ready so something that's a lot less showy and with slightly more practicality. Anyway I've been in touch with a few dealers about part ex deal but they are all coming back with ridiculous low ball offers (as expected) so I'm think of selling privately instead I'm just not sure on what it's going to be worth?

I think realistically thinking i would want it to go for £3500? I see some go for much more but also newer ones go for less. My main problem is the amount of sorted extra bits on it but I know that's only important to somebody looking for this particular set up. I'll list everything to do with it here and see what you all think

Yamaha FZ1-N, 2007, 16700 miles

  • Piper X air filter
  • De-catted headers/downpipe
  • Mivv Gp Carbon endcan

I think that's about everything 🙈😅 and like I say I know the vast majority of that will not count for anything with a dealer🙄. But what do we think? Am I being realistic at £3.5k ?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Whiney noise
« on: 14 October 2020, 04:03:47 pm »
Hey, I've put this in general to reach more people but my Gen 2 has suddenly developed a whiney type noise. Wasn't there this morning on the way to work but very apparent on the way home, Its audible straight away from start up and definitely coincides with the revs of the bike.
Can hear it willing revving at standstill and while driving.
Seems to be coming from the around the back of the engine above the stator area. Possibly airbox?
Doesn't seem to affect anything other than my eardrums but is definitely not normally there.
I've attached a short video clip of it, can anyone suggest where to start looking for any issues?

General / Wheel refurb
« on: 10 September 2020, 10:06:19 pm »

General / Clutch question
« on: 06 August 2020, 10:52:30 pm »
Now this may just be poor riding on my part but recently I've started to notice that I struggle to drop more than 1 gear without having to release the clutch a little?
So say I want to go from 5th down to 2nd, I pull in the clutch lever, push down on the shifter twice but the second movement has no effect until i release the lever slighty which makes the bike drop into 4th then i can knock it down into third, but not second until i repeat the process. Its always done this every now and again but these days its getting more and more frequent
Im just wondering if this is something that can be fixed with a cable adjustment? Or is it possibly a sign of clutch wear? Or is it just me being too shitty with my down shifts?

General / Comms Advice
« on: 05 August 2020, 07:12:18 pm »
I've just treated myself to a Cardo Scala Rider Smart H Bluetooth headset to match my HJC helmet. Great bit of kit but now I'm after a cheap secondary unit for my daughters helmet so she can speak to me on the odd occasion she comes out on rides.
Does anyone have any idea if you can buy just a passenger unit or will I have to get another one the same as mine?
Or is it worth picking up one of the cheap Chinese bluetooth comms units?? Have any of you used one of them? Or can recommend one

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Bikes died 😧☹
« on: 25 June 2020, 02:59:34 pm »
So went out for a ride earlier and all was going well but as I pulled up at a petrol station I noticed the bike sounded a little rough. Didn't think much to it and put it down to the fact I've got a new chain and 'silent' sprockets so have been hearing more random noises than usual due to the quoter drive train.
Anyway it started to sound worse and everytime I can to a stop it started to sound more and more 'chuggy' sort of like a twin? But this was only on idle. It would fluctuate between 800-900 to 1200-1300rpm and be really rough. Also started back firing like a twat on every over run or gear change.

Managed to get back to my house and literally as I pulled up outside and put the bike into neutral it cut out, engine light came on and wouldn't restart! Now if I try to start it the whole system goes off and restarts (like the battery has suddenly failed) and just kicks up an error code 46.
I've checked and that indicates an error with the 'vehicle system power supply'

So what do we think the issue is? I've never known a battery to fail like that? Not to affect the engine running etc and certainly not while running?
So am I going to be looking at something more substantial? Something like a rectifier maybe?

General / An odd question
« on: 21 May 2020, 02:22:17 pm »
How would I go about completely decreasing a chain? It will be for ornamental use so anything goes.
I quite like mechanical art and upcycling parts. I have made a couple of clocks from my old brake discs, shelving brackets from old sprockets etc etc and I'm looking at a project for my current chain and sprockets (once they come off the bike) so need the chain completely grease free.
Any suggestions of something I could bathe it in?

General / Chain question
« on: 20 April 2020, 09:30:36 pm »
I've just discovered that after being sat for a month my chain has developed 3 seized links 😓 I've worked them lose but it's time for a replacement anyway

So I was just wondering if anyone has noticed the difference between the VX Heavy Duty and the ZVM-X Super heavy duty DID chains? And if the latter is worth the extra £50??

Also is the recommended set up still DID chain, Renthal Rear and generic front sprocket? I'm thinking of getting the JT 'silent' sprocket this time just to see if theres much of a difference

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Coolant hose clamps
« on: 18 April 2020, 05:29:23 pm »
Anyone have any idea of the size clamps I'd need to replace the ones on my Gen2? Or can point me in the direction of where I could find out?
Mine are getting rusty so need to overhaul them all.
Also is it worth buying the shiney steel ones with bolts or stick to the carbon steel pinch ones?
Thanks

General / Painting fork lowers
« on: 15 April 2020, 08:01:40 pm »
Since I'm trapped at home during this lockdown I've decided to do a full brake strip and service. I've ordered new brake lines, seals, bleed nipples etc and I'm going to paint the calipers again.
I'm also looking at painting the bottom part of the forks (where the calipers attach to... ive included a picture from google) as mine are quite damaged from stone chips and I'm just wondering if I will need VHT paint for that section Or will normal paint suffice?

General / Spraying wheels
« on: 08 February 2020, 06:39:51 pm »
My wheels are looking worse for wear again. I was going to get them powder coated but the cost of having them blasted, coated and replacing the bearing just seems a little excessive when I only want them the same colour as they are.
My thinking is I can mask off the main hubs and bearings, give then a good sanding then buy a good quality 2 pack paint to spray then with.
Does this sound right or do I need a special kind of wheel paint?
Any tips before I give it a go?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / If your after a Gen 2 rear seat...
« on: 27 November 2019, 02:14:32 pm »
I never got one with my bike so I've been trying to get hold of a reasonably priced one for over 3 years!! Well low and behold last week our good friends in China started making a copy one and are selling it for the reasonable price of £39.99.
That's about £20 cheaper than a 'wrecked' one I'd had on my watch list for 6 months so I took a punt.
Ordered it on 20th November and arrived today so 7 day fully tracked shipping direct from China. No import fees or taxes (may have just been lucky)

It seem well made enough, nice pleather cover, feels like some kind of memory foam inside. Fits the bike perfectly so all in all I'm super happy. Means that from next summer (after fitting pillion pegs etc) my daughter can start coming out for short rides with me 😁

Here's a link for anyone who may be interested 👍

General / Winter gear recommendations
« on: 11 November 2019, 05:59:33 pm »
So I'm heading out to motorcycle live next week at the NEC with the intention of picking up some new gear. I've already got my eye on some new race gloves but my main focus is getting some better winter riding gear.
I'm looking for some decent
Waterproof, warm gloves
Waterproof textile trousers
Possibly one of the rain suits (if they are any good?)

I'm currently using An RST tundra jacket and RST textile bottoms, they do the job (just about) but wouldnt describe either as even water resistant

Ive not got the biggest budget in the world (probably about £500 in total) the gloves and rain suit are my main focus so just hoping to get some recommendations from any of your guys on what's decently priced and still good?
