Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Fitting new C&S - Swingarm Out - Advice Please
« on: 25 December 2012, 01:24:53 pm »
Hi - I'm going to be fitting a new C&S kit so will be removing my swingarm, I also want to take my shock off to give it a clean. I was after any advice i.e. what nuts I should slacken before removing the wheel, any useful maintenance I could do with the swingarm out etc, any non-standard equipment required. The bike is a 2001 Gen1 and has done 33k, do you think I should be looking at replacing any bearings or would a regrease and re-fit be OK?

It looks like it still has the original shock, you will likely want to replace it sooner than later as this is a definate weak point,  have a look at the R6 shock thread for a reasonably priced alternative to an after market unit. I would also advise asking the owner about his regime for maintaining the exhaust valve, if he can answer to your satisfaction and even better show you that the cover plate is easily removed then you are probably looking at a bike that has been well looked after by a knowledgable owner, if he scratches his head then I'd be a bit more cautious. If you want to know what you're talking about look here - http://www.cartestsoftware.com/fz1/exupmaintenance.html and if you're considering becoming a GEN1 Fazer owner bookmark that site as it is invaluable.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Ivans carburettor performance products
« on: 27 October 2012, 10:38:39 am »
The Ivans kit doesn't improve fuel economy and fitting it for that sole purpose would be a mistake. If you read the information about the kit on Ivans site you will see that he clearly states that Yamaha compromised on performance for reasons of fuel economy (and emissions) and his kit is purely designed around performance without these constraints.

As VNA comments the kit does enable you to potter around at low revs as the fuelling has been improved enabling the bike to be more usable across the range, and the enevitable result of using less revs is less fuel consumption (I can get 55MPG if I try hard). However this is a performance product designed to extract the full potential of the engine at all revs and riding around at 4k everywhere greatly misses the point. An Ivanised engine whilst happy at low revs does encourage you to explore the upper reaches of the rev range an experience which is usually rewarded with a huge dollop of arenaline and a fat grin, something that you will want to repeat again and again, until your fuel light comes on after 120 miles and you're reminded that nothing this good comes without a price. I must admit that as finances get tighter and the opportunities to fill the bike up get fewer I do sometimes question whether having the bike ivanised was the right decision as I've personally seen about a 10% drop in fuel economy on like-for-like riding, but then I wind the throttle back, pupils start to dilate, the smile becomes a grin and I know .......................

« on: 22 October 2012, 07:50:17 am »
In essence yes - raising the rear has a similar effect to lowering the front, however as SLG indicates each step (taller shock, shorter links, dropping forks) has an incremental effect on handling so like most you will probably find that the sum result of all three gives the best results.

« on: 11 October 2012, 07:17:07 am »
Because I wanted to replace like for like I got the Nitron Track Shock as it has the remote reservoir which the basic Sport shock doesn't. It was a huge improvement over the knackered original shock and is definately the best upgrade I've done on my Fazer. Having said that, if I were in your shoes I would probably go with the R6 shock conversion as you'd be spending considerably less money for pretty much all the same benefits.

If you are the original owner of the can and believe it is now faulty I would contact MTC to explore the options of having it looked at under MTC’s lifetime warranty. Worst case you might have to pay for it to be repacked but this could work out cheaper in the long run than buying a second hand can which potentially will develop the same issues if it doesn't have them already.

« on: 29 September 2012, 09:07:46 am »
If like me you want a standard looking horn the acumen ones are good. I got one from these people on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Acumen-Motorcycle-12V-Extra-Loud-Replacement-Horn-/261103345031?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3ccaf8dd87

They are stamped 105db but rumor is they are about 115db. also comes in a nice tin :D

Purchaed one of these to replace my OEM horn which varied in volume according to whim, nothing like venting your anger on an idiotic car driver through the means of an electronic wasp fart. I wouldn't say the replacement horn is noticeably louder than the original but would suggest it's pitch is slightly higher. I'm not displeased as it's obviously a cheap item designed to replace OEM horns and as such it fits the bill assuming it has a reasonable lifespan. For those seeking something significantly more disturbing for errant road users than the OEM horn I would suggest that this is not what you are looking for.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: BT023 Vs PR3
« on: 05 September 2012, 10:24:52 pm »
Just replaced my rear 023 for the MOT it lasted less than 3000 miles so that's 25% less mileage than I was getting from the Avon Storm II's. I made the switch because the Storm Front was wearing oddly and I wasn't the only one who had the issue.
With the 023's the bike was slower to tuck in than the Storms and at first I didn't like this but after a while of getting used to them they grew on me offering the usual Bridgestone feeling of predictable and confident handling, they did feel grippier than the storms but I'm not sure this warrents the 25% shorter lifespan.
Next tyre change will be both wheels so I'll be giving a pair of PR2s a go.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Dyno Charts - Full Monty & Fuel End Can
« on: 29 June 2012, 09:25:43 am »
Following Mike doing the "Full Monty" on my bike last year I finally managed to get the bike to a Dyno. I had 2 sets of runs the first with the baffle fitted in my Fuel can and the second with the baffle removed, I thought the results were worth sharing as they show significant improvements in peak figures, delivery and fueling when running with no baffle. The tester was very impressed with the fueling and with the power that the bike was making, so kudos to Ivan and Mike. I'd also reccomend Somerton Motorcycle Engineering in Somerset for any bike related work, very friendly knowledgable blokes who do the full range from restoring classics using their engineering facilities to prepping and racing track bikes.

I think the Honourable Gentleman has misquoted by a quite signficant amount ... ;)
Sorry about that Mike, you deffinately did tell me to raise my idle speed though and I thought you said that was the reason, if not can you remind me what the reason was.

What have you got your idle speed set at? When Mike Ivanised mine he told me to set the idle at about 13500 - 14000 rather than the 1200 I had it on and said that idling a bit faster helps with charging the battery.

From experience battery chargers can tell you that a battery is fully charged even if one of the cells is dead, which sounds like it could be the issue especially if the bikes been left outside over winter with the alarm armed.

a thousand cc is not really needed for the road
Pretty sweeping statement that - at 23 stone with a frequently used pillion perch I'd say a thousand CCs are more appropriate for my requirements than 600  :) Logically you could extend your reasoning to argue that anything capable of exceeding the national speed limit is not really needed for the road which I'm sure you're not advocating  ;) .

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Front sprocket change
« on: 11 May 2012, 07:40:59 am »
I had considered changing the ratios when I have to relace my C&S in the not too distant future but after looking at the costs of a speedo healer and taking into consideration the decrease in fuel economy I've discounted the idea. My Ivanised Fazer is quick enough and if I need to accelerate quicker dropping a couple of gears isn't that much of an effort.

You say you're changing your front sprocket but dont mention the chain or rear sprocket, general concensus is it's better to replace the whole lot at the same time.

I've not always had a car and have done 40 mile commutes to work in freezing fog wind & rain on a bike, now I have the choice I only use the bike on the occasions that I know I'm going to enjoy rather than endure the experience.

Oh Boy what one hell of a fantastic motor .. more low down 'grunt' than your grandad's granddad!   :eek

TBH the low down power delivery of these bikes was probably what put me off more than anything, more of a car type delivery than what I'm used to, requiring a totally different more relaxed riding style, hence the pipe & slippers comment. While I'm sure you can get a hussle on with the CB1300 and it's peers I don't think 'agressive riding' made it onto the design brief, the Kawasaki was the only one that felt to me like it would be up for a bit of spirited riding and was the only one I'd be confident in pushing which is why it would be my pick of the 'retro' brigade. Aesthetically I do prefer the Honda but for me it offers nothing over my Fazer and I doubt it would be as rewarding to ride.

Good - I quite like the Pan European myself.

Lets see where that takes us.  :\

Does this make you happier  :rolleyes
I test rode the CB1300 along with 2 of it's direct rivals from Suzuki & Kawasaki. For me the handling and performance of the CB1300 was between the GSX1400 and the ZRX1200 inasmuch as in my opinion the Kawaski is a better option than the Honda which in turn is better than the Suzuki. Personally I would suggest that if you are considering a CB1300 you should also try a ZRX1200 as like me you may find it suits you better.

I test rode the GSX1400, CB1300 and ZRX1200 of the 3 I found the Kawasaki was the best mix of handling and performance being least like a sofa on wheels, though they all made me want to reach for pipe & slippers to some extent especially the Suzuki.

You can get a seat hump for the Gen1, not that common but they crop up occasionally, give a more sporty look but you'll have to take it off if you want to carry a passenger.

Check ebay for "motorcycle love handles" all my pillions much prefer these to the rails on the bike, can be kept in the spare helmet and don't need any mods to the bike.

Regarding the tyres, I used to run a bridgestone sports tyre on the front (014) and a touring tyre on the rear (020) on my first blade with no issues, I did this because I didn't realy trust the touring tyres and felt more confident with a stickier front on a sports bike, I asked my regular mechanic if this would be an issue and he said not. I'm guessing the previous owner of your bike either felt happier with a stickier tyre on the front or maybe he did a trackday at some point and replaced the rear afterwards, either way it's not an issue as from experience Bridgestones sports and sports/touring tyres work well together.

I had an RR-R blade and an RR-Y, although it was a while ago I wouldn't say that my Fazer is particularly outclassed in the handling stakes (your blade is probably newer though), but I have spent money on upgrading the Fazers suspension which I didn't on the blades. I suspect you might need to spend a little time tweaking the suspension to suit your requirements and to adjust to the new riding position. I find the natural riding position on the Fazer isn't condusive to more 'spirited' riding, I find when the red mist rises I drop forward into more of a sports crouch putting more weight over the front and giving more freedom of movement in my arms to shift my weight around, at which point I'd say I'm as quick on my Fazer as I was on any of my previous bikes.

There's always the chance you'll get stung for import duties which will be another £20, and obviously if it falls apart you'll have no legal comeback.
