Fazer8 / FZ8 / Re: Fitting a Digi Gear on a Fazer 8

I think the bike got written off by a friendly car driver.
Yes on the headlight mod.
TBH though you don't need the mod, the dipped beam is fine if you set it up right. The only advantage of the mod is aesthetics.

I reckon this guy should sod off.
He's asking for help elsewhere too from people who don't know the first thing about bikes.
Isn't that right Gaz? 😁😎😊🤐🤪

Never had an issue with the tps on a bike but the one on the Audi is just starting to play up. Had to reset it 3 times in the last 2 weeks.

Here's his reply

Good Morning, The reason the bolts are missing is that the previous owner wanted to keep his R&G Crash protection. We have since fitted new bolts.
Kind regards

It'll be the starter relay. 10 quid and half hours work.
Prove it by turning the ignition on press the starter and short the two large terminals on the top of the relay, the motor should spin and start.

That's a big change. Adding one to the front is about the same as removing two from the rear.
I know what you said but what exactly is the problem?
I commute 100 miles every day and return about 53mpg and that's not hanging around.
It's no tdm900 but it's not bad.

😂 not a bad idea really but you will still run into the same problem.
I think I'm the only fz8 owner on here (and maybe you?) and as they don't tend to break down much it's only tyres, chain, sprockets, pads etc that need replacing.

Yeh, I have a 100 mile commute, 6 days/week all year round. I'd say the pr4's are more suited to wet/cold/snowy weather.
Pr4 though not the gt version. The GT is way too stiff in the winter.

By power 5 I assume you mean the power RS's.
Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Pressure need to be on the top side 35/40 as they have a pliable sidewall and compression damping can be 1 or 2 clicks out from your usual preference for the same reason.
The rear is quite apexed giving a large contact patch at lean but the front has a flatter profile to improve straight line stability,  this is why the pressure needs to be close to  the upper limit to prevent over flattening when breaking hard while turning in.
Don't know what you expect regarding longevity but I usually get around 5-6 thousand from a rear.

General / Re: what did you do with your fazer today ?

If it ain't one foccing thing, it's another...!

My new Starter Relay turned up yesterday and, as soon as I'd got it installed, there was no sign of the Error 12 and it started on the button! :thumbup

Unfortunately I didn't have the time to do a check ride yesterday, but it seemed ok.

So today, despite the ongoing lack of a sidestand (it was supposed to have been delivered by Hermes on either Friday or Saturday, yeah, right) which meant that I had to get my girlfriend to help hold the bike up whilst I got on (I've got short legs and can't get my leg over [snigger] and get it off the centre stand).

Everything was fine until I was on my way out of Portsmouth and, whilst I was stopped at traffic lights on the roundabout at the bottom of the Mile End Road, the engine suddenly cut out.

I pressed the starter and it fired ok, but then, about 100 yards short of where it changes to the M275, the engine died on me entirely and left me stranded against the kerb of the central reservation as traffic on my left prevented me pulling over that way.

Unfortunately, I was now stuck, because I couldn't get off the bike without the side stand and, even if I could, since I was loaded up with panniers and top box full of stock (I was on my way to a Market), I wouldn't have been able to get it onto the centre stand :(

Fortunately, another biker was not far behind me and saw I was in trouble, so pulled up behind me, got off and directed traffic to go "underneath" me, then gave me a hand to get the bike across the road and into a bus stop on the non-motorway side of the road and then lift it onto the centre stand.

I tried the starter again without any luck and when I switched off and back on again, I couldn't hear the pump priming.

So I lifted the tank checked the fuel pump connector was securely in place, the breather pipe wasn't kinked and, because something like this had happened years ago when I first got the bike, I flicked the Kill Switch a few times as a duff KS had resulted in a similar situation.

Thankfully, when I tried the starter again, it fired and, by leaning the left pannier against a litter bin, I was able to remount and ride on.

Of course this did mean that every time the bike went over a bump or I was buffetted by a bit of wind, I was paranoid that it was going to cut out again.

Fortunately that didn't happen and someone helped hold the bike at the market when I arrived so I could park up and the ride home was uneventful, so, with any luck, the new side stand will arrive tomorrow and I can get back on and off properly, then do a proper check ride :thumbup

Oh and a PS to this: The Market was in Rottingdean near Brighton.

Whilst I was riding back down the Bazehill road towards Rottingdean, there was a guy standing by a car on the side of the road who appeared to be staring at me and seemed to be shading his eyes or something.

It wasn't until I was about 100 yards past him and about to turn a corner that I suddenly thought "Hang on, was that a FOC-U salute?!"

So if it was, and it was you, my apologies for not responding, but I was worrying about whether the bike was going to keep running and the gravel and pot-holes in the road! :(
Glad it was all ok in the end. I'd be inclined to get some Duck Oil (TM) in that kill switch to prevent that from ever being an issue in the future

There's your answer then. Just replace the relay, about sick squid and an hours work including cake and coffee.

I'm in Stow Friday, 400 miles ride into and around Wales then back to Stow on Saturday. If I get up early enough I might be able to make it to Cornwall for lunch and back to Wales for tea. It's only about 180 miles from Stow then around 150 back home.

Quick way to test the relay/starter quandary is to bridge the large terminals on the relay (I use a screwdriver or similar)
Turn on the ignition, short the relay. If it turns it's the relay if it doesn't it's the starter but most likely will be the relay.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not quite sure how to "bridge the large terminals on the relay"

Do I need to unplug the connector? Displace the relay?

If you could give some more details (or pics) I'd be very grateful :thumbup
ADDENDUM I found the picture below, but there seem to be four terminals all of which appear to be the same size!
So which should I short? The top ones? The bottom ones? Left or Right Side...?!
The ones that the heavy cables are connected to. Basically bypassing the relay.

Not at all. The kit for USD forks is just that. Didn't have to use any of the oem parts. Apart from cleaning and oiling it was literally a case of undo the cap, undo the screw in the bottom of the slider that holds the cartridge in place, remove the old one put the new one in fill with oil and done.

Make sure your shift lever pivot is clean and lubed too.
My fz8 gets notchy when it's ready for a lube.

I'm a bit divided here. I'd love an electric vehicle but they're just not practical for me. Don't want to drive a car every day and an electric bike doesn't have the mileage in it for me (100 mile commute). I can't imagine what it's been like for you guys, I've been lucky enough to be running an essential business so still get to ride and it's been better than ever, sunny, dry and hardly any cars, also fuel is cheap too.

Yeh, nipples are always overlooked, I give mine a twist and lube every couple of months and flush and replace the fluid every year.

Yes, the idea is for the aluminium to get warm and expand increasing the hole size slightly and the steel to stay relatively cool.

Trial and error yes, 39 years of it.
Used to race so have a good idea of how to set up suspension correctly.
If you want any help setting yours up just drop me a line.
Would recommend castrol 10w in a 600 assuming you're not over 15 stone.
