General / The 2016 FOC-U Bike Picture Challenge
« on: 01 January 2016, 01:13:21 am »
The winner for 2015 with the most challenges completed was VAL.

As I as got the last one of 2015 (sort of ) it falls to me to start the 2016 one

So here it is for 2016. As mentioned, I'm not going to be scoring this,  so someone needs to pick it up. I suggest Val ---who won the last year .

A reiteration of the rules.

1. All challenges must be of YOUR bike and a landmark, or something obscure or creative, something most people can ride to in their area.

2. Picture has to be taken after challenge is made.

3. Challenge is good for a week; if it is not met after that time, the previous picture poster picks a new challenge.

4. Nothing illegal to be challenged.

5. Keep comments to a minimum; if you comment, post the current challenge in bold type after your comment.

6. No repeat challenges.

7. No other bikes can be used, eg, your bike next to a Ducati. Some exceptions will be allowed, eg, your bike next to a bike cop.

8. Only 1 person can win each challenge; any other entrants will not be counted, due to throwing the whole game off track and adding challenges that don't stand.

9. If any dispute about a challenge occurs, 3 oks from others settles the challenge.

Remember, this thread is supposed to get people to want to go ride straight away and beat others to the challenge - be creative, but be sensible about it.

Have fun Foccers!

The 1st one for 2016 is

Your Bike Next to a Paint Ball Center

General / Enamel Stoving/Powder coat/ Smooth Hamerite
« on: 02 December 2015, 08:39:02 am »
Time to refurb my center stand but what coating.
Whats the difference between Enamel Stoving.and powder coating, which is best for my use.
And then I read here that people have just gone down the Smooth Hamerite route which will be the cheapest Im guessing
Those who have gone down the Hamerite route -- how is the finish standing up to a few months/ years use.
Baring in mind my quote in my signature below :sun

General / Computer healp again
« on: 15 November 2015, 10:30:11 pm »
My new computer which I brought with the focer help has a NVidia NVS 290card  but when I look at the n view resource thing it says available memory for graphics is 3,000mb ish. Yet the card is only 256mb, so is the card then taking some extra memory from the main computer ram and if so how can I alter it. And if so then which is better a card with more ram on it or just getting a lower onboard memory card and instead extra computer ram

General / New computer help
« on: 04 November 2015, 11:38:04 pm »
So I got a little ahead of myself with the office 2010 help request as I also first need a desktop, thanks to all how helped on that one.

Its what I call the family computer as I have my own pc for work that I dont let them touch and foc up, the current family one that I am looking to replace is an old HP D530 pentium 4   2.8 Ghz with 3gb ram
It is used for general surfing email and office use with the odd photo editing.
I am looking at this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-Compaq-8100-Elite-Core-i5-650-3-2GHz-Windows-7-Professional-Desktop-Computer-/111439203465?hash=item19f24b4c89:g:9OQAAOSwpDdVbHSj
as it is exactly the same size as the old one.
Whats the focer font of knowledge  Should I be looking at something else (i would prefer to keep the sff format )
The seller also sells via their own site and makes a big play on the fact they are an authorised microsoft refurb seller (sounds good to me ) and offer 12 months warranty
Would an i3 2nd gen be better than an i5 1st gen

Just looking into this my self as one of the last flight routes has just been issued  here  https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zJoGZd3-Qg5U.k3u8IUZTll6M

Looking at it I can get to see it twice - once at rutland water and then at Bruntingthorpe - here is my route thinking
here

the planes route starts north and gos clockwise right down to the south coast so there maybe a lot of time to kill in between the two points
So just thinking is anyone interested or am i on my own---- ( But if it looks like rain then YOU are on your own )

« on: 03 June 2015, 11:34:16 pm »
Walked out the back door this morning to find pidgin feathers blowing about and then tonight outside the east wing of sharp hall we have a security light which came on reveling the source of the feathers.
The glass has a coating that is almost mirror like when the sun is on it as it is in the mornings

So why is that then, I know some (i think ) are 1 up 5 down, but why are the gears not all up or all down, is it some sort of throwback from the early engines that has for no reason just carried on to today

General / Back to the Future Snapped studs and the like
« on: 03 April 2015, 12:19:09 pm »
When I finally get around to fitting a flux capacitor to to my fazer, im going to go back to 1998 and tell everyone to take those nuts off and put back with copper grease, or swap studs and nuts for stainless steel.

So what other ideas do people have for things that could of been done to save us all problems that we now have to deal with on our fazers

General / Power Adapter Help
« on: 01 February 2015, 02:38:06 pm »
Woke up this morning to a dead modem, so swapped adapter and all is working.
But when i tested the non working adapter it reads 11.8v, it has been used for about 2 -3 years.
The replacement working one reads 12.2v.
What I dont understand is the one that now dosent work - how come it is not just dead but instead now reads 11.8v and how come that is not enough for the modem.

The modem rating is 12v 1A but the original matching adapter whent kaput was replaced with (the now also non working 11.8v one ) which has a rating of 0.8A so am I to understand that the max pull of the modem is 1A but the adapter I was useing could only deliver 0.8 max and so I have burnt it out, -- only I havent because  it still gives 11.8v.

The modem is running right now with a 12v 0.5A adapter should I be worried and should I get a 1A one
Any Help out there Please

General / Binoculars/spotting scope help
« on: 17 January 2015, 12:42:59 pm »
Who knows anything about binoculars or spotting scopes, I have got a vintage pair of binos 16x50 but the quality is crap and they weigh a ton.
I were glasses and when searching for a subject to then look at through the binos I have to have my glasses on then take them off to use the binos, but then I cant find the subject due to the x16 power,
so are zoom binos any good,
What make
And what about a spotting scope as they have good power and are zoom.
And my main use for them would be to see things that are far away !! So I mean everything like "ohh is that a blue tit"---- no its a cheese and oinion chrisp packet, or Is that a ryan air plane, or looking at the occasional astronomical object  -- and so on.
Oh and I don't want to spend much dosh either as they wont get used much.

Any ideas

General / Stupid injuries done to yourself whilst DIY ing
« on: 14 May 2014, 10:38:32 am »
I was going to post in the bench grinder thread but thought we had better leave that and start a new one.

Spose I better start but I dont have anything major but just lots of mild-should of had stitches kind of stuff.
I was in the habit of quickly useing my leg to rest bits of wood 2x3 kind of size to plane (electric) and once sliped off and planed my thy, but luckly just caught the edge of the blades as it sliped off the wood. Thats on one leg.
On the other I got a pipe bending spring stuck inside the pipe i over bent and was pulling it out and extending the spring (resting on my leg) it sliped out my hand and the spring niped my leg, for such a silly stupid thing I have a very nice round scar. So I have a line on one leg and a circle on the other.

General / Tyre Pressure Gauge me please
« on: 08 April 2014, 07:35:37 pm »
So on the back of my foot pump quest I am now looking for a accurate pressure gauge, I already have an oxford (pic) but I'm not sure on its accuracy and it always takes a couple of goes to get it seated properly to get reading, so im thinking of an analogue one like the Draper here
 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-69924-Pressure-Gauge-Flexible/dp/B0002GV286/ref=cm_cd_ql_qh_dp_i#productDetails
or the Race X professional here
 http://www.amazon.co.uk/RACE-PROFESSIONAL-TYRE-PRESSURE-GAUGE/dp/B000VZ8S26/ref%3Ddp_cp_ob_diy_title_1
but im not sure if the spokes will get in the way with this one. So FOCers what are your thoughts

This is my oxford one

General / Strange line on tyre
« on: 04 April 2014, 09:55:03 pm »
Strange line on tyre   BT 023 Tyre I have been noticing this for a while now and mostly put it down to rotating and dragging the wheel when cleaning but its not that. And its not from under the guard Its a wobbly line all around the tire and just off centre its darker and you can feel it. Having googled it I have come across a few with the exact same issue here

General / Another Helmet thread
« on: 22 March 2014, 08:32:38 pm »
So im in an ex hein gercik now aj buying some ear plugs, and he sees my old blue BS sticker and starts on about it is now past its use by date or words to that effect - polystyrene going brittle and stuff. It is now 12 years old and done only 10k miles its a HJC ZF-7. I kinda knew they should be replaced regardless but I like it and its still a good fit ive never dropped it and always looked after it. I do need a new dark visor and a new clear one so rather than spending 25 on those two I could put the dosh to a new one but do I really need to solely based on age, it is a fibreglass one.    I tried on many and the best fit was another HJC - an IS -17 seems that the HJCs crash test dummy has the same head shape as me. What is the Focer wisdom on this please.

« on: 20 March 2014, 10:32:33 pm »
I have never understood them in the way that it is atotal gamble and the insurance company trouser it if you die once its starts. Mark my words this will be the next big misselling scandal. Billions wiped off the value of insurance companies because investors know what a money making scam they were, and now it will be gone so called experts are saying oh people "blow" it all and then go on to state pension and burden the taxpayer but what they fail to realise is that if I spend a £100k pension pot then I am paying the government £200K  by way of VAT on stuff I buy.

General / Interest rate idea
« on: 18 March 2014, 10:26:19 pm »
So how to help savers who are getting next to no interest ?, you cant hike up the interest but what about if the chancellor says something like--- ok if the interest rate was 5% you would be getting £50 on your £1000, but you are only getting  1% now = £5 so would it work if he then gave a the difference back by way of lowering the tax for the year by £45. Would that work do you think.
