We got a load of hand sanitiser delivered at work the other day, it seems there's a lot about that is alcahol free using benzalkonium chloride as it's active ingredient.
As soon as I heard alcahol free alarm bells started ringing so I got round to looking the stuff up today, it seems that although it claims to kill coronavirus and cites european centre for disease prevention and control the only mention I can find is relating to canine coronavirus, a related but different strain that is of no threat to us whatsoever, the american centre for disease control states the active ingredient as unreliable for covid19.
If you are using this stuff check the ingredients and don't let it lull you into a false sense of security, it 'may' work on covid19 but there is no evidence that it will and washing your hands with soap will likely be far more effective, a little knowledge is indeed a dangerous thing!
I can see a lot of folk using this stuff in place of washing hands, DON'T!
And no your 80% proof vodka won't do it either as it's only 40% alcahol, you need at LEAST 60% to be effective.

Cask strength whisky will be just fine then. A steal with prices from just 60 quid a bottle. :lol

My first day at work since the lock down started.
Wasn’t allowed on site till I’d washed and dried my hands.
I also got handed a pack of PDI Alcohol Free wipes.
I’m assuming we’ve got these, as the stronger alcohol wipes are now all reserved for the NHS.
But according to this supplier they are effective against Covid19

The general data sheet says these wipes are effective against enveloped viruses in 30 seconds. Covid19 is an enveloped virus. So worth using.

I have some "Big Wipes" that I use for work to remove silicon and grime etc and checked today and they are actually anti bacterial...99.9% apparently. I think you can get them from Screwfix :thumbup

I’ve always got some Sani Cloth 70% wipes.
You can get em on Amazon, or should I say you used to be able to get them on Amazon.
They are cheap and handy as general-purpose wipes.
I keep some in the car as well.
But you can’t get them for love nor money just now.

I think they need to be anti bacterial and anti virus and in particular effective against enveloped viruses.
But then again, as they are advising surfaces, such as worktops and floors to be regularly washed down with general disinfectant I guess most of these things will be helpful. But I guess proper washing of hands and appropriate use of alochol is best.
