FZS600 Fazer / Re: fz6 ??
« on: 08 October 2016, 11:37:50 am »
It all depends on what you want in a bike. The FZ6 is a bit more screamy with less mid and lower range torque than the Fazer.

Stick to the boxeye!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Throttle Cable free play...
« on: 08 October 2016, 11:35:12 am »
Yep, just as slappy said, it's from the rest position. It's not just the opening of the carbs that's starting the movement, there's taking up any slack, then cable outer movement, as it tries to straighten itself out, plus a few more tiny bits of slack here there and everywhere built in to avoid the jamming of the throttle.

I sort out as much slack as I can get away with at the carbs end, tweak it with the mid cable adjuster, them fine tune it with the engine running. Just about gets it spot on.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: How Many Miles
« on: 06 October 2016, 11:30:16 pm »
Don't think we're comparing with apples with apples. The Fazer is a true all rounder - scratcher, commuter, tourer etc...much like your/my Tiger. The XSR is a fun commuter bike designed primarily NOT for motorways/toring etc. The R1 is a fun/grin factor bike.

Bottom line is that Fazers are well proven, reliable all rounders good for many trouble free miles which is what the OP was referring to.

Yeah I wasn't really starting trying to start any row, I know as we all do how good the Fazer is, that's why I've had 4 of em!(6 if you include the 1000's) I won't buy a bike twice if it doesn't tick all the boxes!
I wasn't trying to steal the thread either, the MT thing is probably a discussion for another time.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: How Many Miles
« on: 06 October 2016, 09:33:44 pm »
I've owned 4 Fazer 600's, and covered well over 100k on them. After riding MT09's and the XSR 900, I can safely say that sub 100mph, I can ride the XSR a damn sight quicker!
Not much in it for acceleration, but there's little in it up to 100 on most bikes!!! It handles better than the fazer, and has better all round punch than its 20+ year old rival.

I'm buying an XSR for play, but my fazers staying too for my commute!

Lew, how did you find touring on the MT? I'm off to Morocco next year on the bike, and I'm hankering after an XSR900!!!!

I'm looking at possibly streetfightering mine too. It's just a commuter, but I'm quite liking the naked look.

And buy a bandit????? Wash your mouth out Bretty!!!

General / Re: Clutch slip
« on: 04 October 2016, 01:19:53 pm »
Just swapped out the clutch springs for a set of 10% uprated ones, and the lever pressure is noticeably stiffer!!! Not so bad for me with my big navvys hands, but it does take away that smooth easy movement of the Fazer clutch.

So the result is, it still slips slightly, but only when you go WOT when the oils not warm. It feels like a step in the power delivery more than anything else! So I'll have to get some new plates later on, she's still useable for my work run for now. Cheers guys!

Yep, replace ASAP! Last thing you want is a sticking throttle, it's Friggin petrifying, and it always happens when your going too fast in the wrong place at the wrong time!!!

Seriously, for the money they cost, it really ain't worth leaving it and taking the risk!!!

Well I changed the oil and filter, and to be honest it really needed it! What came out was pretty minging!!!

As for the clutch slip? Well I went for a 30 mile ride, and it was a little better, but still slipped though. Looks like it'll be a set of springs next, it's all trial and error!

General / Clutch slip
« on: 26 September 2016, 08:24:51 am »
Never encountered this in a fazer (boxeye) before, and had 4 of them doing well over 100k on em.

When the engines cold the clutch slips at 4k, but gets less and less as the engine oil warms up until there's no slip at all. I've only had the bike a couple of months, but done the basics like adjusting the cable so there's some slack on it.
Gonna change the oil this week, but don't  think it's that.
Any suggestions?

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Sat Nav Anyone in Cambridgeshire/Herts/Beds area

I do same as Jbizzle, smart phone with google maps works just fine. I've got a Bluetooth headset in my lid that sorts out the directions.

What I would say though is download the local area map so you can access it offline should you lose 4G signal. Only found this out last week and it's brilliant!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: FZS 600 vs MT09 vs SV650
« on: 09 September 2016, 11:49:30 pm »
I've had the pleasure of riding all of the above on several occasions, so I'll give my 2p worth. The Fazer as we know is now getting on for 18 years young. No great shake, but technology has moved on a bit since then. Don't get me wrong, I love 'em, I've had 6 of them (4 x box eyes, a gen 1 , and Gen 2 thou). Comfy, handle ok, economical, fairly pokey for a 600/4!
Cheap suspension, terrible headlights, looking a bit dated now.

The SV650..... I'm not a great fan of v-twins, but the 's' version is quite fun to ride, the 'n' is a bit boring!!! Not great on fuel, cramped riding position, it's a cheap v-twin sports bike basically. It's a bit of a funny bike because it's 75bhp power feels like so much more as it's very torquey.

The MT-09..... What can I say? It's the only bike that I've ever ridden that I wanted to buy new!!! Mega punchy engine with all the torque of a twin, but revs like a 600/4!!!! Handles ok, great on fuel, superb ergonomics! Huge grins all round!!!
RIDE ONE!!!!!

The Tracer. Yeah it was ok, didn't set my heart on fire though. Same engine as the MT-09,  just carrying 25+kilos more lard! So not quite as much fun. Screen is atrociously noisy!! It was painful!! 200ish miles to a tank, and a big padded seat say it's a better tourer!
I ride a tuned Tiger 1050, and it just feels like a lightweight version of the tiger, not such a bad thing, as I love my tiger.

Best thing to do is go and have a ride, but if I was to buy a fun bike, or short commuter, my money would be on the MT-09, possibly a sport tracker, or street rally. If I could afford it, I'd have an XSR900 in anniversary yellow myself, and I'd buy one tomorrow!

Stop polishing it and ride the bloody thing!!!

I've used a few different ones, but the crafty plugger seems to be the one to choose!

There's a knack to using them too!

Dare I say just before you get a tyre changed, poke a hole through it and have a practice with the repair kit. You'll be thankful when it happens for real out in the middle of nowhere!!

Do you not plug the hole with a repair kit and just wear the tyre out as normal?
I've done this with every puncture over the last couple of decades and it's never caused me any problems!

I've had both the Gen 1, and Gen 2 bikes both tuned up to the max, and I can safely say I preferred the Gen 1 any day!!!

Compared to the Sprint it'll certainly be a different ride. Just get a decent saddle for the Gen 1, and you'll be all day comfy, not to mention enjoying the ride more!!

For Sale & Wanted / Boxeye rack wanted
« on: 22 August 2016, 09:40:20 pm »
Has anyone got a rack or rack arms they might have that'll fit a boxeye?

My lads after one for his birthday as I've got a top box for him.

Any condition accepted, and can collect from a reasonable distance away from Blackpool.

Cheers
Stevie

Well I've been lurking around for a while now for those of you that can remember me.
Just got another boxeye on the road for my commuter, built her up from one which was rather neglected and almost ready for the scrapheap!

Feels really strange being back on a 600/4 again after torquey triumph triples, and litre sports bikes.

Here she is, like putting on an old pair of comfy slippers!!!  8)

A proper flat barred R1, we've been needing one for years!
Got fed up of waiting and built my own a couple of times.

Best bikes ever!

Holy Shit, how big do you need your disks to be?

These brakes are incredible standard, apart from pads which you can swap to race compound if you ride that fast.

And get posh wavy disks maybe.

I absolutely love the Lawson decals, and 80's super/muscle bike style.
The headlight would make or break the look, but this one's a winner in my eyes, it's an easy £7-£8k I reckon.
