Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: FZ1 2009 - very slow tick over when cold
« on: 28 December 2015, 05:28:41 pm »
Guys
Hope you had a good Xmas.
At last I got off my arse and had a good look at the Fazer; I use it daily for commuting and it started ok using the throttle and relying on the ECU to make all the fuel etc mapping but still I'd like to have it running correctly ie warm up on it's own and not stalling..... also the weather may eventually get colder!
As Dek suggested lifted the tank back and blocked it with a long bit of 50*100, didn't remove the air box (cos I'm idle) and then using a long screwdriver with the blade bent at 90degs (like a hook) worked the piston with lots of WD40/GT85 using a long hose the get the lube in the right spot.
Anyway a day later and 4 tests from cold and it seems fine - warming up at 1500 rpm and then cutting back to 1000 at 75 degs C.
Of interest I called the local Yam dealer - have to buy complete throttle assembly at £1600 + £400 to fit; Sharkspare do a thermowax that looks like it will fit for $29 so worth a try! Not sure if there is a UK equivalent?
Dek many thanks again for your help - happy New Year :D

Hi Dek
Thanks so much for the response, really thorough! I'll give it a go tomorrow and see what I can find. Will also speak to local Yam dealer to find out the cost of a new Thermowax unit.

This morning 8 degs C and the bike wouldn't start with the throttle on the stop which is what it normally does. So to get it going it needed a bit of throttle and then TLC until it was warm enough to tick over without any assistance. It's been running slower and slower on the cold start over the last couple of weeks.
Once it's warmed up a little it's fine and the hot tickover isn't a problem.

The bike is used for commuting and done about 34,000; each run is 25 miles or so. It's serviced on time and apart from this problem has never missed a beat to date:)

Any ideas? Many thanks :)

Thanks guys for your guidance - I'll check out the Datatool as well as the Oxfords.
Like the idea of the Datatool switching off automatically.

Chhers :)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Heated grips for FZ1 - recommendations???
« on: 12 November 2013, 06:15:41 pm »
Just realised it is going to get colder and am thinking of fitting heated grips this winter on my FZ1.
What do you suggest? Reliable and effective seem highish priorities....

Normally I've used Oxford muffs that do a reasonable job of keeping my hands warm but thought this year I'd try KTM enduro (got old pair in shed) wrap round guards and heated grips.

For the last 10 winters I've been wearing a 60 W heated waistcoat/jacket that is just great for keeping the core warm and allowing warm blood to flow out to the limbs rather than them getting cold and shutting down.

Many thanks

Hi Mark

Don't know if you have found a spare exhaust but I've got one from my '09 FZ 1 only done 1000 miles and all good.
Any use?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: FZ1 (2009) rear suspension linkage bearings
« on: 04 October 2013, 09:37:07 am »
Joe
Rear wheel bearings consist of two ball bearings, so not much cost there, but also a long thin walled needle race on the inner sprocket side and that's where the cost is - have to be careful removing and fitting it.....

Have changed the linkage bearings and seals etc but just greased the under swing arm needle as not sure if I will be able to get the new one back in cleanly on the bike. Going to wait until I take the swing arm out to grease its bearings and will do it then. Vertical play in the wheel is now about 4mm.

The lower shock bearing is a needle - similar size to the other ones. Don't understand why it's not a rose joint to take any lateral movement - Yamaha are a bit odd like this  - the rest of the bike is 98% brilliant and is let down by the odd design flaw. Still pays yer money and takes yer choice etc etc!!!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / FZ1 (2009) rear suspension linkage bearings
« on: 23 September 2013, 09:15:43 pm »
I've got quite a bit of movement in the rear linkages (ie about 6mm when lifting the rear wheel...only done 17,00 miles - must be the poor roads and pavements....okay I should have stripped and greased them on a bit more often).

Marc at Marksman (v helpful and supplied the bearings for the rear wheel £44 v £120 from Yam) has been able to identify the bearings in the Al linkage/dog arm but has anyone any idea what the other ones are:
The needle bearing under the swing arm
The bearing in the lower end of the shock (rose joint?)

Also any tips on how to remove the one under the SA? Looks like the shock top bolt is a 'mare to remove.....
Many thx

Tues24 Sept - think all sorted, local Yam dealer is supplying bits that I can't measure until it's all apart. Think fitting the bearing under the swing arm will need to be put in the freezer before v careful pressing in. Not sure about the shock bearing - the micro fiche shows just a sleeve...
Good news is that the Yam dealer thought at worse the current movement would get an advisory, so should be ok even just doing the linkages.
