Driller (John)
« on: 03 January 2014, 11:01:16 pm »
I went to see driller this evening and the family have asked me to pass on this message.
John is now at home again but unfortunately not to recover. He is deteriorating quite rapidly so anyone who wishes to come see him should not delay, this weekend would be wise and you are very welcome. He will not be able to reply but he can hear you and sometimes raise an eyebrow. However the family also understand that some may wish to remember him for the fit man that he is (I personally found it a bit of a shock).
The best way to arrange to go and see him is by calling or texting his mobile number 07973 801008, his wife is checking this regularly.
His wife has asked the number to be posted up to help people get in touch quickly so please do not remove.

I can't believe he's gone... Totally gutted. Such an amazing guy and a good friend. He always made a B line for me; usually at a bike related place or event. I had a lot of time and respect for him and I'll miss him greatly... RIP mate... ;-)

I met John many years ago when he was kind enough to let me use his place for a few 'Ivanising' sessions.  A generous and very interesting guy to know.  Sadly, we lost contact a while back and so news of his passing comes as a shock.

I hope he's at peace now and my thoughts are with his family.

RIP Driller

Great shame.  Mike ivanised my bike at drillers place near Swindon 8 or so years ago.  Driller was passionate about all things bike and I will always remember his generous hospitality.  Rip driller

I last saw Driller at the Brackley motorcycle festival in August. Always such a pleasure to be with. Bikes were such a passion of his and next to nothing would stop him riding them. I remember seeing him at a BotW meet a few weeks after he'd had heart surgery. The surgery scars were impressive, but his will to ride a bike was overwhelming! He will be missed.
RIP Driller

This is no eulogy but I have to say a few words about John, aka Driller. I  first met driller at the infamous " FZ-1 test day " at bruntingthorpe in august 2006. At the time there was a very small band of FZ-1 owners ( myself included) who were struggling against the overwhelming FZS tribe ! It brought us together , and that started a friendship between us that didnt wane.. That day I met a very unassuming charming man who just had that spark, that joy of life, and was such great company to be with. I later learned that this often dishevelled man was in fact absolutely loaded ! LOL..part of johns charisma tbh, and he never let it become a barrier to meeting and chatting with anyone.I remember him casually asking me if I could rebuild his coachhouse, and the sum of £80k was casually mentioned ! ....yet he got great fun from just riding his bike and meeting up with his buddies. I recall riding from Rugby to Marlborough just for a cup of tea, such was the attraction to meet him. My only regret now is I didnt put work off and make even more time to just meet up and chew the cud. That to me is real friendship and comaraderie...just nice being in each others company. John had that by the absolute bucketful ! Farewell, one of the great characters I have ever met.
