I've paid for the premium version because it gives you better definition and a forecast of where the rain is likely to be over the next couple of hours which is very handy for planning routes to avoid it :thumbup

vehicle road use tax

No, it's not because you pay it whether you use the roads or not even if your vehicle is *off* the road (unless you SORN) and you don't pay for how much you use the roads.

It is a tax on your ownership of a vehicle, pure and simple.

As Stevie has said about the top box, he's right but I can't get used to the weight so far back.

A tailpack that you can bungee to the back seat rather than having it hanging right off the back might be a better option, then.

My son passed his driving test last year and his insurance is coming up for renewal, he has been shopping around and some companies will give him fully comp for £30 CHEAPER than tpft with exactly the same cover / excess etc!!!!!

This was mentioned on the Martin Lewis show a week or so ago. If you apply for Fully Comp you're seen as less of a risk, because (apparently) they think that you'd only go for TPFT if you thought you wouldn't get Fully Comp!

Were you riding the Fazer?

Yep, it's the only bike I have (at the moment).

Lol i came through Petersfield about 12ish, followed a group from A32/A272 junction led by a large blue bike. Lost them going out of Petersfield.
I then went along A272 towards Midhurst and then off up Harting hill towards Chichester up to Petworth back along A272 to Rogate up to Liphook and then back down to Petersfield then off towards Winchester and home.

Ah, we headed up the A32 about 11:15, then went along the A272 to Petersfield, but after that went up the B2070 and cut across to the A286 via Rake Road before taking Station Road at Milford to get to the B2126 and the A29 and A24 to Box Hill.

We came back by the same route and got back to Loomies about 4:30.

I had a great ride to Box hill today with Grahamm. Egg and Bacon bap plus a bag of chips with coffee to wash it down. Quite busy there too. The view from the top of Boxhill is stunning. Then a pretty good ride back to Loomies on the A32/A272 for another coffee. Then home. A good day

And my thanks to fireblake for joining me for a very enjoyable ride.

Agreed. I have time, but no money or space. I generally sit and ponder. After several hours (really), I have decided that blue LEDs lighting up my engine is too tacky. Something a normal person could have determined in 5 seconds.

Or the time it took to read that sentence! :pokefun

Presuming you aren't just trolling, next time you're out, find a long straight bit of road (motorway, dual carriageway etc) where there isn't much traffic about and with as little as possible pressure from your hands on the bars, try the following:

1) Try steering the bike with your waist and hips.

2) Gently push on the right bar and see which way the bike goes, then try with the left.

See what happens.

At what speeds ? and do I shift my weight or do I read this literally and just push the bars without shifting weight ? :deal

Speed: Anything over a walking pace. And yes, just a little push on the bar, fingertip pressure, no weight shift.

I think in the Twist of the Wrist video (or another one like it) there's a demo of a guy riding along, standing on the pegs and putting *all* of his weight on one side for virtually no result. He then does the same with just a little push on the bar: Big result!

Also check out Full Control for a comprehensive discussion of the subject.

To me what they call countersteering on bikes these days, is counter weighing, steering the bike with your waist and hips, the bars aren't pushed left or right

I passed my test in September 2011 - and I have to admit that I wasn't given a full understanding of how to steer a motorcycle. If it wasn't for my sheer curiosity in to how anything and everything works I probably still wouldn't know.

That's very true.

As mentioned elsewhere, even when you *know* about countersteering and the fact that the bike can turn better than you think, actually being able to *do* it in a crisis situation is another matter entirely :(

Checked out a route to Box Hill, but found the A272 east of Petersfield has been tar-and-chipped.

However I found a great alternative route which I may not have discovered if I'd been able to use the 272 :D

I was an associate member of a local group a while back.  The observed runs were good fun and I got a lot from it.  Unfortunately, in my case, I didn't reach test standard but it was still a worthwhile experience.

Glad to hear you got something out of it even so.

And you can always try again when you've got a bit more experience, that's why it's called Skills for Life :)

300 hours community service and a five year ban for killing his second cyclist;

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-22397918

And the Sheriff effectively blamed the *cyclist* by saying that not wearing a helmet "contributed to her death"!

No, some prick who should never have been let back in charge of a vehicle contributed to her death and a slap on the wrist Community Sentence and a 5 year ban is a foccing mockery of justice!

He should be facing a 5 year jail term and a life ban on driving!

Following my recent post and a check of the A272, it seems that a big chunk of the road east of Petersfield has been tar-and-chipped :-(

However this has actually had a serendipitous benefit, because I've found a lovely alternative route :-)

So the plan is this: Leaving from Wickham Square at 11am, heading up the A32 and turning right at Loomies to take the A272 to Petersfield, then taking the B2070 and cutting across to the A286 via Rake Road. From there we take the A286 to Milford, Station Lane to meet the B2127 and B2126, then the A29 north before taking the A24 to get to Ryka's.

After a bite to eat we head up Zig-Zag Road, down to the A25 and then reverse the route above to finish at Loomies about 5pm.

I hope at least some of you will join me for what should be a great ride on a good day :)

General / Hampshire Foccers - A272 - Urgent Request
« on: 02 May 2013, 11:37:11 am »
As mentioned elsewhere, I'm planning on leading a rideout on Sunday which will include the A272 from Loomies (junction of A32 and A272) to Midhurst, however it seems there's a lot of tar-and-chip top dressing going on at the moment.

If anyone's been on the A272 today or yesterday, please can they let me know what state it's in so I can plan an alternative route if necessary.

Thanks.
