I'm a quick learner, I just need to know where on the bike I'm looking, i.e. back front, behind panel, etc.

FZS600 Fazer / Intermittent indicator
« on: 17 September 2021, 01:36:43 pm »
Hi All,

Just taken my 2003 for it's MOT.  Left rear indicator was working fine on the way there, but wasn't when it was tested (all 3 others were OK). Tester changed the bulb, but it made no difference.  On the way home, failure certificate in pocket, the damn thing starts to work again, and has been all the way home.
I know that there can be electrical problems caused by the large connector up under the left fairing infil, but could that include the rear indicator?  I don't want to waste time opening it up and trying to clean it up if the problem is never going to be there.

Anyone got any words of wisdom?

TIA

Pilot Road 3s and 5s come in a 110/17. Lots of people have mixed a 3 front with a 4 rear.

This is the combo i currently have on my bike, PR3f & PR4r, and it works extremely well,

And me...

Unfortunately there's a cost involved in 'scrapping' a tyre these days (although I believe many are recycled in some way)  Even the tyre places that take the scrap tyres from you are charged for returning them, so if they don't charge you directly for it, you can be sure it's hidden in the price of the new tyre/fitting.

The idea of finding another local authority that will take them from free is a good idea, some are now asking for ID to confirm you're from the local area.

At the end of the day, yes it's an extra cost, but it's not that big an amount.  Would it be highlighted as much of an issue if the cost of a new tyre increased by £5?  It's just another running cost - an extra £10 every so often.  I'll still be doing home changes as It's still cheaper than paying someone to fit them for me.

I'm shopping for my renewal at the moment.

Hastings won't quote online due to too many mods on the bike. Phoned them up and they aren't quoting new policies by phone either.

Bennetts renewal has come up cheaper than last year, but is cheaper still with a new quote.  Oddly, having passed IAM increases the excess by £50 and doesn't affect the premium.

OK they don't do bikes, but Kwik Fit are staying open to carry out there normal services, including MOTs.

You seem deflated  :rollin

There's a reason for that - and it's not the keyring...

i ordered my tyre valves the same day and not got them yet...

The battery is only really used for starting the bike.  After that it's all handled by the generator.

Are the carb rubbers in good condition?

I wasn't sure about the cheap chinese ones, or the expensive OEMs.  I found a good compromise with Ferodo.  Done 5K miles on them with no problems.

A white LED light through a coloured lense makes it look washed out (e.g. pink instead of red), where as a coloured LED through a coloured lens looks normal.  No idea why they are different to old style bulb, but's that's what happens.

3x green, 1x blue, 1x orange, 1x red, 3x what ever colour you want for the dials.

n.b. on my '03 (not sure if it's there on all models) there's also a fixed red led in the rev counter for the temp warning.  This can't be changed.

Excellent feedback. Thanks for that.  If anyone is tempted to replace all the bulbs there are 9.

For best results you need to match the LED colour to the lenses, e.g. green for indicators, neutral, etc.  You can use any colour you want for the dials.

Note the blue LEDs are very bright - great for dials, but not so great for the High beam indicator as it tends to blind you when you have it on. For this reason I left this bulb as the original incandescent bulb.

Do as I suggested to check chain wear as it is a lot easier than taking the carbs off and it you remove the cam cover completely you can check the valve clearances

Do you need a new gasket when you lift the cover or is it re-usable?

Someone on here swapped their clock bulbs for LED ones and one after another they failed. Not sure what the story is but maybe they were cheap Chinese from ebay. Probably LEDs are all Chinese but - you get the idea.

That happened to me, but I persisted, trying different bulb types and eventually found some that haven't given up the ghost and are still working now.  If I remember rightly, they were ones that use SMB LEDs.

Given that the workshop have explained how they came to think it's piston rings, I'd be inclined to accept that's what the problem is.

We know from your own compression tests that there was a problem in that cylinder, and with unfazed saying that the bores are rarely an issue, all that remains is the rings.

For that much money, you might be better off buying a replacement engine to swap in, then selling yours for spares/repairs to reduce the overall cost.

« on: 10 October 2019, 01:18:57 pm »
I'm not sure that is original and I'm confident nothing to do with the speedo.

It looks like an LED, perhaps an aftermarket alarm or even a fake LED to make it look like there's an alarm on it.

The speedo signals all go through the same large multi-connector inside that large rubber boot.  There are no other connections into the dash.

I'd pull the boot and block connector off and check for any corrosion, cleaning if required (unlikely as it's well protected, but you never know).  After plugging it back in, re-test.

If it's still not working, go to the other end of the circuit - remove the front wheel and check the speedo drive.  Chances are it's broken and was dislodged by the speed bump.  Depends on how bad it is as to whether it can be repaired or needs to be replaced.

The number of times I see a vehicle turn right when using the middle or even the left hand entry lane, cutting in front of those trying to go straight on is shocking.  Even more so when it's an Artic truck and everyone has to stop and wait for it.

Remember that an Artic needs a lot more space to turn, so they may *have* to take the left hand lane so the trailer clears the roundabout.

No, this is a large roundabout and that wouldn't be the case here.  It's the first roundabout off of the M1, Jn8

Had a car do it this morning, a few seconds ahead of me.

Highway Code Paragraph 186

Quote

When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise

*    select the appropriate lane on approach to and on the roundabout
*    you should not normally need to signal on approach
*    stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
*    signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.

So it's left hand lane to take the first exit.

The right hand lane to take an exit to the right, or go full circle.

The 'appropriate' lane to go straight over. Is that the left lane or the right lane?.

The 'appropriate' lane is down to your judgement and circumstances.  Local knowledge and good observation really comes into play here.

My choice is usually down to the volume of traffic in each lane and their exit route.  If the majority are turning left, I will take the right.  If the majority are going left I will take the right. If it's a mix or majority straight on, I will pick the lane that is free-est flowing (usually the right lane, as most people assume left is the correct one) and pick my way through as safely as possible.

One of other thing of note, on a busy roundabout where there is slow moving/stop-start traffic, being in the right lane gives you a better opportunity to be the first out of the junction, especially if the gaps are too small for a car.

Personally, in this situation I'd normally always be in the right lane.  In most cases I'd be able to safely slip in front/behind another vehicle if it's in the left lane and going straight on, and in worst case scenario I just keep going around the roundabout as a safety get out.

This means that if you're in the right hand lane, expecting a car on your left to go straight on, they may decide to suddenly turn right across your path!!

I tend to expect that anyway, the driving standards these days mean it's relatively common.  On my daily commute there's a 3 lane entry and 3 exits.  I go straight on where there is a 2 lane dual carriageway exit. I vary my entry lane between the middle and right lane depending on what cars are there, taking the left exit lane when in the middle and right exit lane when in the right lane.   The number of times I see a vehicle turn right when using the middle or even the left hand entry lane, cutting in front of those trying to go straight on is shocking.  Even more so when it's an Artic truck and everyone has to stop and wait for it.

I usually try to time it so that I don't have a car on my left when on any roundabout, overtaking on the way onto the roundabout, rather than on it.

Bit of a diversion from the thread title but whilst on the subject of roundabouts...

Which is the correct lane to take when entering a roundabout where there's 2 lanes on the approach/entry but neither has any direction arrows painted or signed, and you wish to go straight over where the exit is a single lane?.

In this instance I'm not sure there is a right/wrong.
