Speedo drive rotor dry? Mine made a squeal. Finger full of grease solved it.

Another simple mistake that you hope not to repeat is parking on the side stand in neutral while pointing down hill.

Happened to me once on my sloping drive. Fazer rolled off the side stand and knocked over my Speed Triple, also on the side stand in neutral. Two bikes on the floor  :eek

I wouldn't worry about it. The energy companies' rampant profiteering at the moment, means you can't afford to ride your bike anyway  :(

I'm in a similar position. My Britannia Rescue for the car covers me for any vehicle (including my 3 bikes) but not for Europe. So only stuck with CN for my regular annual week abroad. Didn't do Europe last year, and not sure again. So I might switch next renewal.

Trouble with older bikes is the low value against brand new parts. Insurance companies will often write-off well below 100% of the value.
What you can do, if you are fairly confident that it's not badly damaged is to agree the write-off value then offer to buy it back off them as salvage (for as low a price you can get away with). Then repair to the standard you can put up with. If it does turn out to be worse than you thought, you can usually get your salvage money back by breaking for spares. That's how the insurance company would sell it to a breaker anyway.

Perhaps the overflow leak is just a stuck float, and needs a gentle whack?

Haven't done it myself, and someone will correct me if wrong.

I believe you need an individual CoC from Yamaha. Yamaha UK will charge you a fee for this. The CoC should show the NOX level as below TFL's threshold. . Although all FZS1000s are technically compliant, the CoC is individual to your VIN. So you can't use somebody else's CoC. You then send the CoC with a copy of your V5 showing your Reg No and VIN to TFL, who will record your Reg No on their database as exempt.

No use trying this route for a FZS600, as the CoC will show the NOX value as non compliant

Or left depending on which way you dress

[Pedant warning] I think you'll find the valve should always point to the right. Away from the bike leaning on the side stand [/end of pedant warning]  :D

Makes it easier to do right turns though  ;)

When I did my O Levels (back in 1981) we weren't allowed calculators partly due to the cost being prohibitive for some people, but mostly due to "mathematical snobbery" (Slide Rules and Log Tables were good enough for me and my father and grandfathers...!)
Did my O levels in 71  :eek
Helped my grandson with his Maths homework this week. He's 11 and just started seniors. All about maths principles - brackets, integers, negative numbers etc. No calculators allowed. There is hope yet.
We also tried a bit of French homework, but quickly lapsed into Del Boy phrases  :lol

When I was at school we had to have fun with logarithm tables and a slide rule...  :b

My first computer was at work. COBOL on a ICL 3900 Mainframe with massive tape spools, where you were trying to save every byte of memory.

After that it was all downhill  :)

Isn't the problem that even if you do a DIY Cat, or otherwise adjust your emissions, Riverbank are the only shop authorised to test?
