Jesus H! Hope I'm never on the opposite carriageway from you at night!

Is your bike an import? Dipped looks very "continental".

Unless you have grounds for believing a contributory factor in the incident was that the door was defective in some way or lighting should have been better or that operating the door required training that the company failed to provide, I can't see that a claim against them will stand much chance of success.

WTF? Don't know whether to be annoyed that the bargain price I paid yesterday is now way over the odds or if I should start running the car on the stuff too. :lol

When I had friends in Gloucestershire I loved the run along the A417 from Streatley to Cirencester. There are some excellent stretches through beautiful countryside... used to set off at 6:30 in the evening to miss the worst of the traffic and arrive a couple of hours later with my visor opaque with splattered midges and a huge grin on my face.
Unfortunately, even before my friends moved a decade ago, sections started getting double white lines, 40 limits and speed cameras... so I don't suppose there's much fun to be had along there now. :(

JZS, thanks for the alert about Hein Gericke oil on half price offer. :thumbup
Went down to my nearest at Farnborough this morning, they were still selling at £24 for a 4 litre carton of HG 10W 40 semi-synthetic until I suggested they look at their own website. They rang the head office who confirmed it and so they halved the price at the till. Result!
Staff didn't seem that happy: whether that is 'cos they're making no profit at that price or just pissed at head office for not keeping them informed, I didn't stop to enquire. :)

That's a stunning shot of the P40, Tori.
Love the 1940's film effect too.

According to my gf, a bit of leakage around the nipples is not necessarily a sign of anything untoward and can just be a natural part of the monthly cycle.
I'm not sure she really understood the question though.

If it's the OEM immobiliser, it lives in the tail section (I suspect some aftermarket offerings may use the same connector).

If so, simply removing it won't solve the problem... you'll need to get (or bodge) a link plug. This is what it looks like on the earlier version of the FZS600:

Those tyre pressures sound a bit low, I'm just two thirds of your weight and find 34/37 psi to be optimum (though best pressure will also depend on the make and model of tyre).

« on: 26 May 2012, 07:15:38 pm »
I signed a guarantor agreement for my niece's accommodation in Portsmouth a couple of months back. The letting agent initially tried to enforce the same deal, but after a discussion went back to the landlord and the clause was dropped.
So, unless you know the parents of the students she'll be sharing with, I'd say go back to the letting agent and argue.
"They're all like that, Sir" shouldn't go unchallenged... they're not.

Hi Andrew, and welcome!
Great introduction... had to Google Angelman's, so it's been educational too. :lol
I hope Dylan enjoys the ride. Am I right in thinking helmets are still optional on sidecars? In which case it needn't be a showstopper if he objects to the lid.

« on: 25 May 2012, 09:29:44 am »
No, it's not normal. The breather is blocked.
If you get a length of flexible plastic tube and press it against the little orange cone-with-a-hole that's visible when the filler cap is open, you should be able to blow down the breather tube and hear it exiting at the rear of the engine. Blockage is usually due to the rubber hose at the bottom of the tank getting pinched somewhere.

define average weight. ;)
i was 102kg the last time i checked. :eek

Blimey! So that's about 40kg more than me. :o
Oh well, I may be a weed, but I'll accelerate quicker. :rollin
Stick with the 36/42 suggestion and experiment, my freakishly low pressures won't suit you at all!

I've found 34/37 psi to be the best with Bridgestone BT021s.
I'm fairly light though, you'll want more air than that in them if you're of average weight.

That sort of thing is exactly why I hate letting anyone else touch my bike. I minimise the risk by just taking the loose wheels in to have new tyres fitted, but even then they can screw up... I've had the rim mangled by the bead-breaker and the new tyre installed backwards on more than one occasion.

It may be that the later model is different, but my understanding of the tank on the '98 version at least is that there are three pipes attached to it. There is the fuel outlet to the carbs via fuel filter/pump and two others, one of which drains the rainwater from around the filler, the other connects via the filler cap and is the breather. The drain and breather connect to two rubber tubes that are routed down behind the engine to the outside world (I think more recent models use a funnel rather than directly connecting to the tank). So, even if you do overfill the tank, I can't see how fuel can end up on the air filter rather than the ground.
The crankcase and carb breathers do terminate in the airbox. Is it possible that, rather than anything to do with the tank, you've a problem with a stuck float?

General / Re: MOT pass or fail?
« on: 23 May 2012, 09:58:10 am »
Usually don't have any trouble getting the bike through the test. As Dave48 says, they're easier to check and, since things going wrong are a bit more serious when you only have two wheels, there's a good incentive for keeping an eye out for problems.

The car often fails... usually on rust or brakes. I could see the sill was going to be a problem last month and got it welded up before the MOT, the ungrateful thing then failed on the back brakes. The handbrake was working fine and the car was stopping OK, so I'd no idea it was only the front making any braking effort. Kind of illustrates why the government ditching the requirement for pre-1960s cars to have an MOT certificate is a dumb idea... some faults are hard to spot no matter how much you polish the thing.

Certain tyres are surprisingly noisy, it took me a while to get used to the racket from my BT021 front.

What's more important here, the fact a rider lost his leg in an avoidable accident and is now disabled for the rest of his life, through no fault of his own, or pandering to a foriegn lorry driver/company who did not follow our highway lwas?
Eh?  "through no fault of his own..." ???
He admits he could have positioned himself out of harm's way and didn't! Whether this was because he was actually travelling faster than appropriate, whether he was riding in a belligerent manner to claim the entire half of the road or simply panicked and ran wide doesn't change the fact that he could have avoided the accident.
I think reading this sorry tale as an example of prejudice against bikers (or indeed, as reason to be prejudiced against foreigners) is plain wrong.
We should be taking it as a lesson in the value of defensive riding.

General / Re: bugs on visor - soap and water or something better ?
« on: 21 May 2012, 12:08:42 am »
Another supporter of the damp kitchen roll soak technique here.
If the visor's greasy I'll use washing-up liquid... salt is soluble so doesn't scratch the visor. (The reason you don't use it on vehicles is that it accelerates rusting.)
Soap, on the other hand, can deposit calcium carbonate (same stuff as in abrasive creme cleaners) if you have hard water, which will leave smears or cause scratches.

Well, I'm not falling for that old trick!
Anyone else want to pull Tori's finger?

VNA: I thought that was the Parochial House on Craggy Island. :)
Tori: I'm sure that in the time you've spent on here explaining why you're too busy to post anything... you could have found an image and posted it. :pokefun

Anyway, here's one I took in March while the bike was undergoing an MOT.

OK, not especially old... but has quite a creepy atmosphere about it (like most abandoned industrial buildings). I guess it was built in the 60's when that part of the Blackwater Valley near Ash was being used for gravel extraction. The resulting holes in the ground are now fishing lakes, there is a chain of them stretching from south of Aldershot all the way to Finchamstead with the odd gap where towns got in the way.

The rider was in no way at fault. If the lorry was too wide for the road it was on it either should have taken a different route or had an escort.
Absolutely. Lets close every rural lane in the country to buses, delivery lorries, every council roadmending truck and farmer's vehicle if they can't be trusted to sacrifice a wing mirror now and again so that I can enjoy the whole of "my' side of the road.  :rolleyes

On the other hand, perhaps some of us have survived undamaged so long because we don't regard the white line down the middle of the road as anything more than a guide... and don't feel the need to force oncoming vehicles into the verge just so we can have 6ft of clear tarmac to our left. Picking an argument with anything bigger than a rabbit is a recipe for disaster. We're just too vulnerable.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS / BRAKE JUDDER
« on: 19 May 2012, 09:35:47 am »

I agree with Gnasher, those calipers are superb. Mine are still performing brilliantly despite having covered an impressive mileage.

It can take a long time to get discs bedded in. I changed mine last October and opted for EBC discs and pads.
They were a bit grabby at low speeds at first and the discs rusted like crazy and would stick hard to the pads when parked overnight if there was any hint of dampness. Oddly, they're now fine, nice and progressive and they don't rust... but it took about 3000 miles of use before they started behaving themselves.

It sounds as though you've eliminated a lot of potential causes, though I do wonder how you can maintain the flatness of the disc to better than 0.001" when rubbing them down with sandpaper.
I'd more suspect the torsional rigidity of the front forks than the calipers. If there's something amiss with the inner surface where the axle clamps them together via the spacer/sleeve and speedo housing then they could rotate slightly in response to the torque applied by the brakes. Maybe that could provoke some sort of resonance effect that then buggers up the discs.
