FZS600 Fazer / Replacing selector forks and drum
« on: 13 May 2014, 08:14:42 pm »
Hi, i have a 1998 fzs600 and since i have had the bike it has been very clunky/sometimes grinds/crunches when going from 1st to second and from second to third. Also there is significant whining noise while in second gear. Does this sound likely to be a bent selector fork or worn drum? If so i heard that these can be replaced with the engine still in the frame with the sump removed and clutch out. I replaced the cam chain on this bike and fork oil/seals etc so feel confident i could do this job. Any ideas on what it could be or info about replacing the selector forks would be appreciated.

Cheers, Dan

FZS600 Fazer / Side stand causing engine to cut out in neutral
« on: 29 March 2014, 04:34:15 pm »
Hi, so recently my fazer got stolen and they hot wired it. Luckily i got it back and managed to repair most of the things wrong with it, including reconnecting all the wires to the ignition. Although i am left with one minor problem. If i have the bike in neutral (neutral light on) when i flip down the side stand it cuts the engine out. If i hit the starter switch it will turn over but not fire up. I read somewhere about a relay under the left hand side black panel maybe causing this problem. Any ideas? Also what size are the holes in the front disc, looking at getting a disc lock.

Thanks, Dan.

FZS600 Fazer / Flat Spot
« on: 27 August 2013, 10:53:17 pm »
Right so after blasting it half way back from poole bike night tonight my 1998 fzs600 developed a problem. As i was trying to blast it past my mates fz1 my bike lost power and now will not rev past 7k unless i hold the throttle back for a good 5 seconds and then finally revs past it but with very little power. It feels liek a very bad flat spot. Also it seems to happen lower down the rev range if i'm in the lower gears. I feels as if it looses power at the point when the engine used to start pulling hard. I'm wondering whether it's running lean as i had the fan come on for the first time today also the carb rubbers are cracked, but i sprayed wd40 on them and the idle did not change.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Dan.

FZS600 Fazer / 15W Fork Oil. Does it make that much difference?
« on: 26 August 2013, 06:55:04 pm »
So i hate how spongey the forks are, will changing from 10w oil to 15w oil make a reasonable amount of difference? Or do i really need new springs?

FZS600 Fazer / riveting a cam chain
« on: 14 August 2013, 10:28:30 pm »
so i have my new cam chain, and i also have my rivet link. I'm going to replace my old cam chain on tuesday/wednesday. I've been looking at the rivet link and the chain and working out the best way to rivet it. I'm after a bit of advice from someone that has done it already about how best to press the side plate on and also how do i hold the internal two plates while sliding the rivet link through the holes without dropping everything  into the crank casings... stuff it with rag?

Cheers, Dan

FZS600 Fazer / cam chain rattle/ valve clearances / buggered engine
« on: 30 July 2013, 06:29:09 pm »
Whats wrong with my 1998 Fzs600 with 30k on the clock?
I took the cam chain tensioner off the other night and it was fully extended, i don't believe it has had its valve clearances checked either. The tick usually goes away after 15 mins of riding although has got worse recently.

Please check out the youtube video below and vote. Also reply if you have more info for me. Cheers.

FZS600 Fazer / Cam Chain
« on: 26 July 2013, 11:00:08 pm »
Hi, so i own a 99 fazer 600 with 31k on the clock. For the last 1000 miles or so i have had a cam chain tick when cold/ after riding for 10-15 mins. although after about 10-15 mins it did get a lot quieter. Anyway, i thought i would try the usual take the plugs out and roll back trick. Didn't work. So i decided to take the cam chain tensioner off and it was fully extended. i reset it and refitted and as i thought still a tick. Is this time for a new cam chain then?

I'm going to be doing this job myself and as the bike is my only transport i will need to do it quickly. (in one day hopefully) I'm going to do it in the frame with a rivet link and open ended cam chain.

Any advice on where to get the chain and how to best go about doing this would be great.#

Also one question that comes to mind is how do i split the old cam chain? do i need a special link splitter or just a bog standard one?

Thanks, Dan.

FZS600 Fazer / front Sprocket Nut Dealer Problem.
« on: 15 July 2013, 11:49:57 am »
Just a quick question. My sprocket nut is the old style nut, but it is not loose. Should the local dealer replace the nut FOC? If so does this have to be during a service or can i literally just take it to the dealer for them to change the nut without paying for a service. Thanks.

Does anyone have the front right hand crank case cover. It's number 11 on this diagram.

FZS600 Fazer / Front Sprocket nut question
« on: 21 June 2013, 10:39:49 pm »
Hi, so I was reading the thread about the front sprocket nut issue that has affected so many people. I decided to go check mine to see if it was the old or new style. Turns out its the 9mm old style nut. Has anyone recently been to a dealer to get them to change it, are they still doing this for free? And if I go in and they play it down saying it's not a know issue or some bull shit like that.. is there anything I can say? Cheers, Dan.

FZS600 Fazer / Sanding Forks and maybe painting
« on: 19 June 2013, 09:24:46 pm »
Hi, so lately I have been thinking about sanding down the bottom part of my forks and either spraying them silver or just keeping it brushed aluminium as they're quite flakey.
Has anyone had a go at this and got any tips?
would you remove the forks to do this or just remove the wheel and mudguard?

Thanks, Dan

FZS600 Fazer / oil with friction modifiers
« on: 02 June 2013, 10:21:43 pm »
So i used this oil that my dad had left over from his car.. it was motaquip high performance 5w40 fully synthetic oil and i put it in my bike. I'm not sure if i'm being paranoid but i think i can feel the clutch slipping at high revs. I have only had the bike for a few weeks so i'm not 100% certain. Anyway i had a google and heard that if the oil has "energy conserving" on it it would most likely have these friction modifiers in the oil that could cause a wet clutch to slip on a motorcycle. I couldn't see energy conserving on the oil container but it does say fuel efficient and also that it reduces internal friction (surely that's what all oil do though)... but does that imply friction modifiers?

Also i'm probably going to change the oil anyway, but does this mean i'm going to have to change the clutch? Or shall i just simply replace the oil?

Thanks for any advice.

Dan.
