Title: Carbs Vs Fuel Injection
Post by: His Dudeness on 25 July 2019, 09:30:09 pm
Which one do you prefer old school carbs or fuel injection and why?

this is a timely post. I run a cb1300 alongside the fazer thou and old Harley. I recently picked up a early 1300xjr sp (2004) for my brother in law. Big mistake. Its made me realise I dont like Fi at all nowadays, The cb is up for sale, and im looking for either a mint gen one or early xjr1300... :'( The Fi on the honda always felt ok, but after the different delivery on the xjr the honds feels like a on/off switch two up at low revs. Which I do a lot of nowadays.

I think carbs can potentially be better (smoother, more power etc) but only when they are set and run in perfect conditions. Where as fuel injection runs fine 99% of the time.
Also if there is any tuning to be done fuel injection wins hands down as it take 10 mins on a dyno and a computer where as carbs require multiple complete strip downs and half the bike in bits haha

So I vote  FI  😊

When I did a lot of touring I had a 1100 Honda Pan European on carbs,I had this for 5years then they brought out the 1300 fuel inj model which we had for 7years,the 13 was a far superior bike in everything except pick up from low revs,it was so much smoother on carbs I thought when we first had the 13 there was something wrong with it but the dealer said that's the trade off for fuel inj,you lose that low down smoothness for a slightly jerkier throttle action, but overall the advantages of fuel inj far outweigh carbs.Personally I'd rather have that control and milky smoothness of carbs, probably because I don't feel the need to teararse around, but what do I know ? ;)

I've never had any major problems with carbs. Nothing that a can of carb cleaner or a rebuild kit couldn't sort. I like that you can get in and take them apart and do a bit of poking and prodding but I think I'm leaning more towards fuel injection now because of the tuning and data collecting side it. And everything is fuel injected now so it makes sense to learn about it and how to diagnose problems.

Injection for me. A little jerky occasionally, but better than having to faff and fault find with carbs

I have had carbs on all my bikes except the CBF1000. That was fine while I had it but I prefer carbs as they are easier to fix yourself and generally cheaper too.

I have only ever driven one FI bike...a Honda 600 hornet. It felt lightweight compared with the FZS and definitely didn't have the same GUTS....
but that's what I expected, so I continued to believe that carbs is the WTG.....but over the last few months I've had some carb issues which involved taking them off the bike several times... tedious, especially if the problem isn't resolved and u have to do it again. Now i'm seeing tacho diagnostics indicating a TPS problem....cheapest replacement TPS is £100...so is it worth it...??  am thinking the answer is to trade up to fuel injected Fazer 1000..??
The same power and accelleration with less hassle and expense...? :evil

Presumably, with carbs fuel is always fed to the engine.  With fuel injection when you close the throttle you cut the supply of fuel to the engine.  Hence the off/on feel of fuel injection.

However presumably, with fly by wire throttle and a microprocessor between us and the injectors, there is more that can be done to ease that off/on feel.  And again, more options for aftermarket fiddling.

A lot of presumably (s) fae VNA.

Can’t say with my recent test rides I had any real issues with feel with regard to fuelling.  Though they were only relatively brief test rides.  All the bikes felt more immediate than the old fazer thou, but perfectly controllable, though the MT10 needed a gentle paw on the throttle.

Don’t sell that CB Ogri.  Dunno what they are like to ride but they look great.  Tried an XJR, it just felt old and odd.

Two up?  Tell her indoors tae get her own bike.  I mean two up doesn’t just ruin yer low down fuelling but focs up yer handling too.

UPDATE......
TPS problem turned out to be a false alarm. Power and acceleration are what motorcycling is all about...I vote carbs....! :evil

I dunno mate. I'd rather be solo all the time but rarely get away with that nowadays :'(

Yep, the FI on the FZ6 is designed to "save fuel" such that when you roll off the throttle going into a bend, it cuts the fuel.

This means that, when you open it again, there's a lag followed by a jerk as the fuel comes back in :(

A Power Commander or similar setup stops this happening :thumbup

Early car fuel injection systems would cut the fuel completely above about 1500rpm and then supply idle fuel below that if the throttle was shut. Once they introduced catalytic converters though, idle fuel was supplied at all times when the throttle is shut to help stop the converter cooling down too much
