General / New touring jacket time.
« on: 19 November 2014, 04:52:15 pm »
It's time for me to buy a new touring/winter jacket, and I'm a little out of touch with the new kit.

I've always been a Hein Gericke shopper in the past, but they've buggered off out if the UK now, and the euro ones colour schemes resemble an 80's shell suit!!

Been looking at an RST paragon iv, and an ixon krypton hp as a couple of ideas. Anyone got one of these?

Anyone got any other jackets that'd be worth a punt at?
My picky criteria is:-
£250 limit.
Waterproof. (no removable liners!!!)
Warm as toast. (With removable liner)
W/p pockets. Traditional 4 pocket design is my favourite.
3/4 ish length.
Gore tex used to be my big thing, but I'm sure there's just as good alternatives out there now.

General / Choke cable
« on: 19 August 2014, 08:10:54 pm »
Does anyone have a Fazer choke cable knocking around somewhere that could measure up for me, and even better, take a photo of it.
My R1 comfort kit is uncomfortably stretching my cable, an I could do with a longer one.
Cheers in advance

General / Sunny ride
« on: 17 August 2014, 07:34:20 pm »
Out on my usual ride to work on the R1, the sun was out, lovely and warm and I was having a chilled out ride with my music on.
My ride takes me past a large bike sales room, Preston Harley Davidson. As I rode past I could see in the huge windows side by side lots of big ass chrome motorcycles. In a moment I could see me sat upon this magnificent motorcycle, It was shiny, and mint, and I looked right at home on it.
Immediately I thought "thank God for mirrored Windows". :P:P

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Exup pulley
« on: 10 August 2014, 12:09:50 am »
Some of you might know that I recently snapped my exup pulley wheel trying to service my seized valve.

As I can't source one for love, nor money, and being a former engineer, I thought I'd make one myself!

I found some steel plate in my "workshop" and set to work cutting out 3 plates I intended on rivetting together.

That's the main one done.
This next one is for the centre of the pulley where the cable lies.

And the backplate.
I clamped them all together and drilled the rivet holes.

I pinned the lot together, and riveted it up.

Just needs dressing up.

And here it is fitted to the exup cables ready for the valve to go back in.

Backyard engineering at its best!

General / 1/5 turn throttle mod for free!
« on: 19 July 2014, 03:39:45 pm »
Got a bit bored and decided to do the 1/5th turn throttle mod as I've done to ta few of my bikes in the past. Some just buy an R6 throttle tube, but they're 20 odd quid, and I'm a tight arse!  :lol
All I used was a piece of 35mm plasic plumbing pipe, cut an 8mm wide section off it, and glued/pinned it on to t throttle tube. It's really easy.

I took a load of pictures whilst I was doing it, but for some reason I can't upload them from my PC.  :wall

I posted exactly the same thing on the Tiger forum about 2 years ago when I did it to my last bike, so I'll just put the link on here if anyone's interested in doing it.

http://www.tiger1050.com/index.php/topic,16404.msg180504.html#msg180504

The only difference is that the throttle housing on the FZ1 has some small lugs inside that need filing down slightly, an the cable ends on mine needed chamfering slightly.

It took me about 1 1/2 hours (had my dinner whilst the glue dried) and now the throttle is 1/5 turn instead of 1/4 turn. :thumbup

For Sale & Wanted / Gen II for sale.
« on: 09 July 2014, 03:57:02 pm »
 2010 Fz1s Fazer in white.

12 month MOT/6 months tax
31000 miles (it's been toured on, but that's nothing, it's what it was built for!)
Service history up to 22k, then I did all the services myself.
In good condition with the following mods.
MIVV carbon GP can (link pipe has slight dent on it)
BMC filter and Lars airbox (high flow mod)
Trimmed secondary flies for increased bottom end torque.
Two brothers juicebox and 6 custom maps.
16t front sprocket (fitted last week)
Speedo healer to adjust for the sprocket.
Bendix MF front pads,
WRP Fatbars and clamps.
Custom bar end mirrors.
Custom mirror blanks.
Custom luggage rack (based on Ventura but more discreet)
Custom tail tidy.
Crash bungs and rear bobbins (never used)
Heated grips.
Belly pan.
Led indicators all round.
Nightbreaker headlights.
Clear headlight covers.
Choice of 3 screens. (touring, stubby , and black double bubble)
Stubby levers
Electronic chain oiler.
Maxxis diamond tyres (amazing rubber).
It's estimated to be producing 155bhp with all the mods, which equates to "goes like stink". However the bike is easily turned into touring mode very quickly by swapping the screen (2 minutes)
Most of the original parts are available, and the bike is wanting for nothing.
It'll easily keep up with most superbikes, but is way more comfy. The thinking man's sports bike!

I'm after a swap for a ktm superduke/supermoto 990/ speed triple 1050 as I just fancy something different.

Special price to you foc-ers. £4695 ovno.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Ivans reflash
« on: 05 July 2014, 07:20:11 pm »
Is there any out there with the Ivans reflash?

Just wondering whether I should shell out and get it done or not. I'm aware that It works magical powers in smoothing out the power and De-restricting the first three gears, but I'm concerned that it'll further ruin the already appalling fuel consumption (37mpg on last fill!!!)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Speedohealer
« on: 22 June 2014, 10:32:29 pm »
Does anyone know if the Speedohealer harness for an 08 r1 will fit the gen II?

I've tried all the websites, and coming up a blank.

« on: 20 June 2014, 06:52:00 pm »
Has anyone on here ever owned/ridden a KTM superduke, or 950/990  supermoto?

Being tempted probably as a moment of madness by chopping in the gen II for one, and would like a  bit of an owner's review.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Mirror blanks
« on: 06 May 2014, 03:42:42 pm »
As I removed the ridiculous antennae mirrors recently and went to bar ends, the recesses in the fairing have been making the old grey matter work.
Here is what it looks like atm.

I've made blanks out of plastic which took me ages to carve out, also I filled the holes with chemical metal to create blocks which are not quite finished yet.
Here's the plastic disks.

And up close.

The chem metal blocks. One with screws in from the top, the other I integrated bolts in place when I moulded them.

And up close.

So It'd be good to get some opinions in what looks best.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / 16/45 Fuel consumption
« on: 19 March 2014, 10:01:09 pm »
Have any gen II owners done the 16/45 sprockets and recorded the fuel mileage difference?
I'm considering it as it's been recommended by another site for cheap performance upgrade, but I'm not convinced that the fuel mileage isn't affected.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Anyone tried these?
« on: 11 March 2014, 09:34:38 am »
After my ovine interaction last year which smashed my right peg hanger, I had to buy a replacement which I could only find in silver. Thought about powder coating it back to black, but also thought about rearsets as I'm a shallow bugger and always after an excuse to buy bling for my steed. I've bought quite a bit of Chinese copy parts, and not had any bad ones 'yet'.
Anyone tried these?

General / I've seen it all now
« on: 07 February 2014, 01:36:07 pm »
Saw this c90 rider this morning in Preston. 70's open face lid, bread bag handlebar muffs, peat bag seat, more rust than an 80's Alfa Romeo. Awesome!

General / Next bike?
« on: 29 December 2013, 09:31:52 pm »
Once my bandit 600 has gone, I'll be after another bike for work. I've got a short list of machines to chose from, and a tick list for those bikes that I've missed or forgotten about.
The list so far in preference order is:-
Thundercat
Foxeye (had 3 boxeyes in the past, fancy a foxeye)
ZZR600
CBR600

If there's any bikes I've missed, my criteria is as follows:-
Economical 50+ mpg.
Nippy (90+ hp).
At least a 1/2 fairing for the motorway stint.
Reliability
It's gotta be fun!

If there's any of you guys have owned any of the above (dont take the piss with the fazer!), or have any alternative ideas, let me know pro's/cons of ownership.

For Sale & Wanted / Bandit 600 sale or swap
« on: 17 December 2013, 05:19:05 pm »
Bought this bandit as I wanted to try out the naked experience. I've realised It's not for me!
It's a 99 bandit n on a T plate. 22000 miles, and in what I would call showroom condition!

Test till April, tax till end may.
GSXR piggyback shock.
Re sprung forks to match.
Recently overhauled brakes.
Braided brake lines. (front is dual lines)
Custom seat.
Renthal ultra lows.(+ originals)
Heated grips.
S/steel cooler guard.
Tinted flyscreen.
Fenda extenda.
Carbon effect rear hugger.
Renntec grab rail.
Luggage rack now fitted.
Scottoiler + dual feed nozzle.
New chain/sprockets.
Stubby scorpion titanium + baffle
Chrome engine bars.

I think that's it!
I'm after £1300 as it's absolutely immaculate, OR a swap (cash adjustable) for a fazer, preferably a  foxeye, but I'm not that fussy.
Not desperate to sell, as still using it for work.

For Sale & Wanted / TDM 850 for sale
« on: 01 November 2013, 06:09:12 pm »
I've only had the bike a couple of weeks, and it's not for me. I want another streetbike (fazer maybe)
It's a 97 tdm 850 in yellow/silver.
42k, (this is nothing for a TDM)
Mot April 2014
6 months tax
Valve clearances just done,
S/S 2 into 1 exhaust + headers
Renthal 992 bars
Iridium d/b screen
Givi rack
Spada top box
Avon Roadrunner tyres pretty much as new.
Aftermarket shock ( It's an old one but is still good. Just redone bottom bush)
Rear wheel bearings just done.

This is a superb bike for winter Commuting, but it's just not for me.
I'm after £1300 as this is what I paid before the mods.
I would like to replace it with a 500cc+ streetbike such as a fazer.: :)
I'm in the Blackpool area
Pm me or call 07786265794.

General / She's moving on!
« on: 08 October 2013, 03:37:21 pm »
Well it seems like another one of us is selling their little Fazer! My work donkey is more than likely going to it's new home next week, back into the loving arms of my son who's decided to get back into biking after a 12 month break.

I'm keeping the white FZ1, as that's my baby, but as I commute 40 miles per day, I need another bike. I'm thinking of going a bit Jap Retro just for a change, and going for one of these.

Has anyone out there had one? Or currently owns one? Or wants to sell me one (for about £1400)

General / Just taken an mt09 for a spin.
« on: 02 October 2013, 06:29:37 pm »
Went to Raceways in Fleetwood for a set of brake pads, and there it was, the mt09 spanking new.
I paid for my pads and was asked did I want to take it out for a spin. Silly question really. ......
Within the first 10 seconds I was giggling like a schoolboy with his first porn mag. This thing is a hoot and a half! Massive torque from almost tickover, and it keeps on pulling up to about 12k!!!!
It's like sitting on a light supermoto with twin turbo nitrous power, it's awesome!
It's a hooligan tool, for that there's no doubt. It was trying to wheelie off every roundabout at very low revs! It's a Sunday blast tool, but an every day ride, Erm, no!
Controls feel a bit fisher price, and the mode button works, but would probably get ignored after a while.
I even think it looks cool! Can't wait for a faired version. :))

General / Maxxis diamonds
« on: 29 September 2013, 08:27:22 pm »
Just fitted a front maxxis diamond to the fz1, fitted for £80. It replaced my knackered pr3 which was getting a bit wooly on the steering and after only 5500 miles, ruining my shiny day blast out.

The result was absolutely amazing! I was a bit dubious to the level of grip this tyre was going to offer me for the price, and took my time scrubbing it in (40 miles ish).
From cold this front tyre was precise and predictable, as it warmed up it stayed pretty much the same! The steering felt quicker than the pr3, and changed direction better too.
As I progressed into the ride over lythe valley, and hardknott pass, this tyre gripped like shit to a blanket! I was chasing my wingman on his tuned up Mille, which is a very quick bike, coupled up with a very quick rider, and I kept with him corner for corner. (he's on Pirelli Angels). These diamonds took everything I could throw at them.

On the return journey I took the lead. My confidence had got so much that I totally overdid one of the tight bends, stupidly grabbing a bit of front brake!!! Expecting the front to tuck, and re decorating the fairing with local foilage I was sadly mistaken. A bit of a kick from the bars, the diamond dug in, and kept me the right way up! :o
The rest of the ride was quite uneventful,  enjoyable, fast, and a damn good scratch!

So all you sceptics out there, what more could you want, grippy, predictable, stable, and a good looking tyre! About 20% cheaper than top brands, and will probably last as long!

Dont know about wet riding, but if you ride like that in the wet, your asking for trouble no matter what rubber you have!
