Yep. I bought a second hand under tray after the previous owner of mine hacked his down. I was sick of my back getting covered in road filth, and my luggage, come to that.

Every now and then mine is a bugger to start and I have to feather the throttle just a little until it catches. No idea why. Maybe the plugs get wet or something, but feathering it just off the stop with no choke will eventually get it going and it's fine for months thereafter. I'd love to know what it is.

I see. I've always just whipped it off usually because the coolant needs changing at the same time. Interesting to know you can get the downpipes off without though.

That's almost certainly the downpipes not being seated properly in the head. Did you use new gaskets? Annoying, cos I know it's radiator off again for you...

Make it live! We're all on your side!

Poor old Fazer, being treated badly by that shabby bunch in London. I see Two Wheels Only's website domain is up for sale. Are they even still in business? I'm pretty sure I got a set of tyres fitted by them decades ago, but never used them for service.

Yeah, I understand people who don't like Bridgestones, PieEater, and it is a 'feel' thing. I can chuck it around like no one's business, I have no problem braking hard into bends and it just speaks to me. I totally get it when racers say they have or don't have confidence in the front end, Bridgestones give me that confidence. Pirellis are also a good other option, great in the wet too.

I tell you one thing though, on trackdays, they do seem to overheat and get greasy towards the end of a session. I've had a couple of monumental slides when flat out in third and banked right over, real high-side territory. But then again, I was pushing them bloody hard and they are a sports touring tyre.

As for the ZZR, I've got T30s fitted now and have used BT023s and the are both a league better than the two sets of Avon 3Ds I tried. They don't change in feel as much as they do on the Fazer when they wear either.

The Avons were fine in the dry, though, even did the Nurburgring on them, but in the wet, jeeezuz. I can't stress enough, it would spin up over white lines with just a hint of throttle in top at 50mph. With the first set, I thought they must be a duff set, but I wore them out anyway (9500 miles, would you believe, mostly commuting) but when the second set were just as bad, I swapped back to Bridgestones and problem solved. It'll take 3/4 throttle in third in the wet no problem (that's about max throttle in second on a Fazer) Go figure...

Bridgestone 021 and 023 fronts do seem to feel very different when worn to how they feel when they're brand new, and on the Fazer 1000 Gen 1 in particular the steering is affected. When new, the bike seems to bank over quite slowly in a lovely flowing arc, but when worn, it drops on it's side in a flash.

Having said that, they are my preferred tyre. I've been through 27 sets of them on various bikes and although when worn the steering can feel odd, I still find them more confidence inspiring than anything else. Quite possibly, it's my riding style - I'm very heavy on the front brake and steer very quickly and decisively, i.e. I pin it to the ground, flick it in and get back on the throttle immediately. This seems to suit the tyre, I like the fact that it drops onto it's side quickly, so it's not an issue for me.

I've tried all sorts of other makes too, including Avon Storm 3Ds on my ZZR. The Avons were, by a country mile, the worst wet weather tyre. Zero grip. The bike would spin up on 1/4 throttle just crossing a white line on a motorway. Used to scare me witless. Mind, they are a very long lasting tyre.

I could definitely feel the difference in carcass construction going from Avon to Bridgestones though. The Avons have incredibly stiff sidewalls compared to the Bridgestones, I think, which I think makes them more consistent in feel as they wear.

I could be making all this up though!

Whatever you feel is the right tyre is the right tyre for you though. Try a few!

Just my two penn'orth. I've used my local dealers Flitwick Yamaha several times and every time they get the sheared bolts out using the old weld-a-nut-on trick. Usually around 70 quid.

As for getting the headers off, as DustyDudes said, use lots of heat and they should be ok. Having said that, on a system that has seen little maintenance, the studs can gall into the aluminium head and shear no matter how much heat you apply. That leaves you with a real problem - last time, I had to drop the engine out and take that down to the dealer along with the exhaust.

Oh, and just getting the silencer off can be a nightmare too.

Honestly, if the header stud nuts look terminal, just bite the bullet and take the bike to a dealer.

For Sale & Wanted / WANTED - Rear fender, undertray for Gen 1
« on: 03 May 2017, 08:32:23 pm »
Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have a un-modified OE rear fender undertray for an 01-05 FZS going spare?  Apart from a couple of dubious examples in the US, there are none on eBay.

The previous owner butchered the original and I'm sick of getting covered in crap from the spray from the rear tyre even with a hugger fitted.

Cheers
AyJay.

Interesting. I bought it from Infiniti Motorcycles who should be a reliable source. It's not like I bought it sight unseen from eBay or similar. I even sent the previous one back and the Dainese importer gave them a very hard time, so I'm pretty sure its genuine.

nick I think? they where made in wales but shut down now. ;)

Hmm, doesn't ring any bells. I think what might have happened (and I'm going back to about 2007-ish), is that due to hikes in raw materials costs, Yuasa batteries imported from Japan got very expensive for a time. Distributors in the UK then sourced them from other manufacturing plants that Yuasa had, but I think it was still somewhere in the far east (not China). These were not of such a high quality though. Japanese Yuasas then dropped in price again at some point later. Or something like that. It happened while I was working at a motorcycle dealership. We ended up selling Turbo batteries, which were distributed by Feridax, whilst Jap Yuasa prices were so high.

My main point being, the price and quality of Yuasa has indeed varied depending upon where they were made.

Thanks for that Hedgetrimmer. It's interesting to know that there's a reason behind sudden drops in quality. I'm pretty sure the dreadful quality of the latest Dainese jacket I bought recently is due to them being bought out a couple of years ago. It just isn't up the standards of jackets I've had previously.

It's strange how some can go west and others stay fresh.

I've had a MotoBatt on my ZX1400 for 5 years, I stored it over winter for 5 months, started first click of the starter after 3 months in a garage with night temps down below freezing. After 5 months, it still started fine, but I gave it charge for the first ride this year anyway.

Conversely, I had a standard YUASA drop dead after two years on the Fazer. That bugger cost 80 quid, yet a cheap and cheerful no name battery that I bought for less than 30 quid is still fine after 3 years.

Quality control on batteries of all makes is utter crap, it seems.

the top bushes I got sent by Brooks Barn are smaller in width than the ones I removed (see photo) is this something

anyone else has encountered,or is this the norm now? Any help appreciated before I call Brooks Barn in the morning.

I've had bearings from Brooks. They were the right size. I'd give them a call and clarify.

Which would you rather have, an MT-07 with 7500 miles for £3750 or an FZS with 7500 miles for £3750?  That's the value.

Aside from the fact you won't be able to ride the FZS in London after 2019, they're both essentially 'almost new'.

« on: 09 April 2017, 12:13:07 pm »
Thanks for the info. fellas, as luck would have it it's the easiest bolt so hopefully I can get it in situ, assuming that the others come out, just need some quality cobalt drills, if I remember from my sheet metal days jobber make good stuff so will get a few of them. Does the Gen. 1 1000 have the same nut shearing problems as the 600 when taking off the downpipes ? Mine are in lovely nick as the bike has had a sheltered life so don't foresee any problems.
Cheers
Carl

I've taken three sets of downpipes to my local Yam dealer and they use the method of welding a nut onto the snapped bolt. Poor buggers, the amount of snapped fasteners I keep giving them.

As for the downpipes, the latest bike I had, three of the exhaust manifold studs sheered off, so it was engine out and down to the shop. They galled really badly with the aluminium.

I still have that bike and stick by my comments even though they maybe unpopular.
Parts provided by marksman were a wrong fit.

Sorry Galahad, I got the wrong end of the stick there. Apologies.

Suppliers do screw up, know. I got a clutch lever a couple of weeks ago, said FZS1000 on the packet and it was not the right part. Completely different pivot on it.

You'll know the gearbox is on the way out when it's starts slipping out of second on up changes. It gets worse and worse until it goes bang (yeah, personal experience of an 01). My second and third Fazers lumps never jump out of second and one's done way over 100,000 miles.

As for the notchiness, I've noticed that mine's slick until it gets really hot and bothered and then it can be a bit recalcitrant, but it does sound like yours is a proper problem. I'd have a long hard look at the linkage, the play on the change lever pivot, and of course, the chain.

So while doing the forks i have noticed the head bearings are notchy, quite bad, so need new. Now when i look at the Yamaha parts its about £100.

I have seen the Marksman kit http://shop.marksman-ind.com/yamaha-fz1-2001---05-headrace--steering-kits-23350-p.asp, from what i read the tapered bearings are better was will last longer, if i buy the marksman kit will i need anything else for the job? Better to replace any wee cheap parts while in there is they are perishable.

Seen this topic http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,7518.0.html and it has me a bit worried on that the parts will all fit fine? There is a rubber washer mentioned, any idea on part number?

I've used this kit on two bikes, everything you need is in the kit. I remember reading that thread and being a bit baffled as to how he'd got it wrong. As for the rubber washer, just re-use the old one. It's only there as a dust seal, if I remember rightly. It's a fiddly job and getting the bottom race off the steering stem is pure butchery. Damn thing will just not move until you're really belting it with the hammer and chisel. The one on my Kawasaki needed only light tap and it pinged off, but Fazers.. jeezuz.

Satisfying when you're done though.

Hi Mike,

At work I was invited to a bash for people that had been at the company for more than 10 years a couple of weeks ago and that seems a long time in this day and age. But it got me thinking.... you must have been Ivanising Foccer's Fazers for way longer than that. You deserve a retirement!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Another TPS question
« on: 09 March 2017, 09:40:05 pm »
My TPS wore out, Graham.

The symptoms were that I'd be riding along at usual motorway pace and there'd be this hesitation almost like it was running out of petrol, but not quite. It drove me nuts for a couple of weeks as I tried to work out what was wrong. It didn't show up on acceleration or cruising at 50mph, just 80mph which is my usual cruising pace.

Eventually, I bought a multimeter and you could see the voltage drop as the throttle went over what was presumably the worn out part of the trace that corresponded to around 5500rpm or 80 in top. It was quite easy to do the check, so grab your multimeter and crack open the service manual.

Having said all that, my bike is very high mileage. I think it went around 120k miles.

Top tip, the Yamaha T-Max TPS sensor is the same as the Fazer 1000. And it's a lot cheaper to get a second hand set of T-Max carbs than Fazer carbs.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Fork Service
« on: 08 March 2017, 12:00:12 am »
Aye, that should do it Tefer. To make a job of it, get the Yamaha OE parts. Pattern fork seals are not great in my experience.

It's not a difficult job bar getting the big allen bolt out of the bottom of the fork leg, which can be a pain. After the first 3 rebuilds, I nearly rounded the bolt out, so I bought one of these. Makes the job much simpler if you've access to one.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Clarke-CEW1000-Electric-Impact-Wrench/dp/B0039BQRUO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1488930817&sr=8-2&keywords=electric+impact+wrench

Other than that, go slowly, keep everything as clean as you can and enjoy the rebuild. As for the springs, I popped some Ohlins progressives in years ago and you can barely tell the difference between them and the standard springs. Maybe I should have gone for higher rate, but it's not the massive day and night difference you get when changing the rear shock for a better one. Honestly, I'd not bother ...
