Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Rear brake caliper pin holes worn
« on: 11 October 2014, 09:12:27 am »
Just had my tyres replaced and was advised that the holes that the pins that hold the brake pads in place go through in my rear caliper have worn badly. They are oval!
I guess this is just because of vibration slowly wearing the metal out, but....
Is this common?
Am I doing something wrong to cause this?
Apart from a new rear brake, is there anything I can do?
Thanks in advance

General / service above and beyond
« on: 07 April 2012, 10:38:39 pm »
I got home Thursday night with oil all down my right leg, boot and back half of the bike.  The oil filler cap had gone :-(.

A ring and drive around the local dealers resulted in none in stock.  I popped into a local mechanic that I have used a few times in the past for mot and tyres and once for some work, bit I am by no means a regular, just on the off chance he had one on the shelf.

Although he did not have one spare, he took the filler cap from his own bike and gave me that to keep me going until he can get a new one on Wednesday - he knows I use the bike to get to work and he is away with the family until Wednesday so not using the bike.

Last time he did work, he had a 3 week wait until he found I was going touring in 1 week, so he snuck me in so the bike was good to go.

Bloody nice bloke, good mechanic and reasonable rates too.  If anyone is looking for a mechanic, tyres or MOT near Uckfield, East Sussex, I can highly recommend Terry Everest at Everest Motorcycles.

Hope 'advertising' is ok, but it is rare to find people like this.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Fuel filler lock seized!
« on: 28 March 2012, 06:01:05 pm »
Got to the petrol station today and could not open the filler cap. Being ham fisted, I even bent the key trying.

At home, tried the spare (straight) key and still no joy.

Undid the 5 Allen key bolts, bit it appears that there is something else to undo before I can remove the filler cap unit (I left my Haynes manual at a friend's house after some work on the bike).

The lock is currently soaking in penetrating oil, but I'm not holding much hope.  I'll replace it ASAP but I need to know how to get the cap off to replace it and if there is a short term bodge to open the lid.

How hard can I hit what to help? Don't mind if cap does not lock if a temp fix can be performed. Would a screwdriver down the barrel force the lock open?

I've got enough fuel to get to and from work tomorrow, just, but as the light came on as I got home, 36 mile round trip is all I'm prepared to risk.

Thanks in advance

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Dog bones
« on: 14 March 2012, 09:54:04 pm »
Just cleared out the shed and found 3 sets of dog bones of different sizes.

I know 1 jacks the back up but not sure about the other 2. Guess 1 is standard and one changes ride height, but don't know which way.

Measurements between holes are roughly 130mm, 126mm and 121mm.

Can anyone please advise on which does what to ride heights so I can advertise them appropriately.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / BS kite on silencer question
« on: 10 March 2012, 07:14:08 pm »
If my old BS kite mark "fell off" my straight through Akrapovik, as they do you know, and I wanted to put one on to help at MOT or being stopped by police time replace it, where should the kite mark go?

Is it where the 'not for road use' was, ie under the little pipe at the back of the silencer, where the 'E' mark is on the OE pipe, ie on the inside, or doesn't it matter.

Thanks in advance

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / EXUP and pipes GEN1 and GEN2 compatability
« on: 02 March 2012, 10:20:42 am »
Firstly, sorry to start another thread on EXUP valves.

Whilst talking to a friend about EXUP valves he mentioned he has a spare (complete exhuatst actually) from an 06 Fazer, which he thinks is a fuel injected one (sounds right to me).

Would the EXUP valve from the Gen2 pipe fit my 02 Gen1?
Would the downpipes fit my Gen1?
Any other parts work stealing for the Gen1 from a Gen2 pipe?

Searched the 'net for info but all I can find for the EXUP valve is that they work differently (It seems the Gen1 has the EXUP for more power and the Gen2 for sound reasons, there is one reference that the EXUP valve is the same and the solenoid is different (but that is just from a bulletin board!).

Thanks in advance.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / DOT 4 or 4* or 5.1?
« on: 24 January 2012, 04:03:36 pm »
Never thought about changing the DOT rating of my brake fluid since I found out that DOT 5 could not be mixed with DOT 4 (and I'm too lazy to clean the whole system out rather than a quick flush through).  Anyway, looking for brake fluid last night and I find that you can get a "super DOT 4 (like Motul RBF)" and a DOT 5.1 that can be mixed with DOT 4.

I think the only time I had brake fade on the Fazer was when chasing better riders down hill on the Alps and using a lot of hard braking.  It is easy enough to change the fluid so unless it will last a LOT longer I don't think I need additional life.  Any other benefits with the superior DOT 4 or DOT 5?

What is the collective thought about brake fluid?  Stick with DOT 4 and save the extra pennies, use the DOT 5.1 (at twice the price) or go up to a racing brake fluid (at 4 times the price)?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Rev counter needle in wrong place!
« on: 09 January 2012, 09:00:25 am »
I changed the undertray on my Gen1 Fazer 1000 at the weekend all by myself and some idiot  :o replaced the tip over sensor upside down  :'( .  Anyway, easily fixed that once I worked out the 9,000 rev display warning and found said tip over switch, BUT...

As I switched off the ignition with the rev needle showing 9k revs, the needle fell the wrong way and is now point down at the 6 o'clock position when the ignition is off.  When the ignition is turned on, the needle moves clockwise and stops underneath the normal stop and cannot move any further.

A quick net search suggested using a magnet to drag the needle back around but this makes no movement at all with ignition off and a little flicker when ignition is on (perhaps I need a stronger magnet).  Same post also says that it is easy to get to the needle and move it by hand if you take the instrument panel off.

Before I take everything to bits for no reason...
a) can the needle be moved by a stronger magnet?
b) can the needle be easily got at
c) would just rotating the instrument panel around to get the needle back in the right place work
d) any other easy way to fix this.

Thanks in advance

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Electrical problem - pointers please
« on: 21 December 2011, 03:23:43 pm »
Hi all,

I have a Gen1 Fazer 1000.  It has been off the road for a year or so, but just got it back on the road.  It wasn't stored very well over last winter and was sat under a plastic sheet in the garden so got a wet and snowed on.  It is running OK except for an intermittent electircal problem.

Every now and then the engine will die for a few seconds.  During this time the lights stay on, but the clocks, rev counter and speedo stop working.  I have done things like turn the run-kill off and on, but I dont think this really has any effect on the problem - the bike just starts working again.  Once (and only once as far as I know) the rev counter and speedo both flicked around about full and then back again to zero and then the engine started (as I was riding at the time I was not paying too much attention to exact figures displayed by the needles - is this a diagnostic like the TPS is out?).

Given that the clock die but lights stay on, I've ruled out side stand switch, run kill switch and ignition as, I think, either the clocks will stay on or the lights will go off - is this right?

I've wiggled wires and fuses, but cannot replicate the problem when stationery.  Before I attempt to trace and double check every wire that it could possibly be, are there any known weak areas in the electrical system on the Fazer that could cause this or areas that people think I should start looking at first.

Thanks in advance
