FZ6 / Fazer / Re: fz6 newbie
« on: 28 January 2022, 02:27:23 pm »
Firstly, the FZ6 drops into first gear like the Crack of Doom! This is, incredibly, absolutely normal.
Work colleague of mine bought an FZ6 S2 for London commuting on my recommendation. He wasn't prepared for that first gear clunk, hated it and sold the bike on a month later! Has now gone back to BMW's... Having had Fazer's all my biking years, I find the clunk reassuring now. :-)

General / Re: What are you going to do with your Fazer this winter...?
« on: 11 December 2021, 02:11:12 pm »
Not got a huge amount planned for the winter TBH. I serviced my FZ6 back in October, oil, filters, fresh coolant, brake fluid etc. Flew through MOT no-hassle last month. I'm now living in Scotland, so I'll probably only be riding the odd day when the weather allows, but I do now have a garage to keep it out of the elements and on the trickle charger. But no upgrades to the bike planned. I could do with reevaluating the air horn I've mounted under the fairing, it hangs down a fraction too much and very occasionally hits the front fender when the forks fully compress. But that's been on the list for some time now...

My main winter focus is going to be getting everything straight in our new house and organising the garage. I would like to kit it out with some nice workshop cupboards, worktops, bike ramp etc, but due to lack of funds after the move, that'll have to be a longer-term plan.

Otherwise, winter is the time I finally get round to doing something with all that video footage I shot in the summer. Hopefully, it's not all shit and I can cut something vaguely interesting out of it...

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Mk1/2 Fazer 600: Ulez test
« on: 19 August 2021, 09:19:27 pm »
Well bloody hell! Good info, sadly too late for me, swapped my 2003 Foxeye Fazer for an FZ6 S2 a couple of years ago solely to keep riding into the city centre.

Did do the Certificate of Conformity exception route for my wife's old 2006 CBF500 mind, that was under the limit from stock and Honda were dishing out the CoC's for no money. Did us for a while and certainly helped when we came to sell it.

Events, Meets, Ride outs etc / Re: Yamaha Day at The Ace 23/05/21

One possible fly in the ointment, doesn't the owner have a thing against Fazers, one of the last times I was there heard he had asked some of our brethren to park out of sight
Never had any hassle parking my Fazer there wherever I wanted. Perhaps the chap in question just had a particularly scuzzy looking Fazer...  :rollin

Will pencil 23rd in my diary, I could be persuaded to crawl out of the woodwork for a LOFO meet since it's been so, so long since I last joined anything FOCU related. :-)

FZ6 / Fazer / Re: Crash pads/bars
« on: 16 March 2021, 09:48:41 pm »
Just got R&G sliders and bar ends on mine. Even tested them out, check it out here: https://www.instagram.com/p/BuHQ8CUne5f/
Between them and top box, it all held up well. Tiny scrape to engine cover, bust peg and bottom of side stand ground down a spot. Either way, they did their job and saved a lot worse damage.

« on: 27 December 2020, 04:35:52 pm »
For years I've been meaning to cut a specifically shaped bit of wood to hook onto the bars and front of the tank. Perhaps with some protruding bolts to hook the tank bracket onto etc. Never got round to it. Still I just use some random bit of wood I have to hand and put up with occasionally knocking it and having the tank crashing down onto me...

Did she also tell you that if she gets a positive result from the lateral flow test that she then has to get a proper pcr test to confirm it. Seems that they are happy to accept a negative LFT but not a positive.
Probably because:a) It's still a good way to catch asymptomatic patients or those not yet showing symptoms. Even though its not a 100% accurate test, it's still good to catch those who wouldn't be tested otherwise. Whilst those showing symptoms will likely be pretty ill and be given a PCR test anyway.b) Although it has a low false positive rate (0.32% ish), the socio-economically ramifications of telling someone (and housemates) to isolate for 14 days is great, so why not double check them with a PCR test to confirm they do indeed have covid?
c) To test everyone with the PCR test is a huge drain on resources, with resources needing to go to screening labs etc. The LFT is a reasonable first pass test to help bring cases down.

Canna understand this whole anti-vax thing and TBH I'm gonna even try to understand it. If you don't want to vaccinate, your choice, survival of the fittest and all that, go score yourself a Darwin award.

At the end of the day, I'm paying plenty enough tax, some of which (not enough) will go to NHS and possibly help you. My wife is working 12hr shifts 3-4 times a week in ICU, decked out in whatever PPE she can get hold of and will be ready to drag you through it on a ventilator (if you're lucky enough). My employer (www.titian.co.uk) and dev team I manage produce software used at countless pharmaceutical and bio-tech companies across the globe, helping them in their research for all kinds of future drugs that might save your sorry ass. I've spent 8 years with them working with many of the biggies, GSK, AstraZeneca, Roche, Janssen, Pfizer, Evotec, Merck, Sanofi, Novo Nordisk and many others, I've visited and worked in the labs at many and I can assure you, there's some bloody clever people out there working their hardest to stop you getting sick.
But, if you'd rather take heed of some mumbo-jumbo off some random Facebook group of clueless Luddites, go for it. But spreading disinformation is as damaging as spreading the virus itself.

As Fazersharp said save it for the elderly and vulnerable. Those of us young or healthy enough to not worry about it will be fine, just like the seasonal flu.
Except the evidence shows it's not quite like seasonal flu, with many young and healthy people being hit badly with some very worrying long term issues. Organ damage, loss of smell/taste, heart issues and other complications from the spread of tiny clots from the fall out. Many of which we're still coming to light and slowly being linked to Covid. Not to mention many young and healthy people from BAME background who have not faired well at all.

As far as I can find out it has not been tested on the very vunerable that are first in line to get it.
Well there's some serious ethical dilemma's in trialling a new experiment drug in a population who are very vulnerable, in case side effects are happen to be found...

Wealthy countries are buying up all the vaccines. Covid will continue to thrive in the '3rd World'.
Astra Zeneca are offering their vaccine at cost price to third world countries for perpetuity:https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2020/nov/23/oxford-astrazeneca-results-covid-vaccine-developing-countriesThe hope is this will give them a vaccine they can afford so Covid cannot thrive.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Plastic FZS 600 Foxeye visor bolts?
« on: 07 October 2020, 12:47:06 pm »
Plenty of generic stainless bolts about, but I would definitely recommend you stick with plastic/acrylic bolts. In one of my previous 'offs' I got thrown forward and smashed the screen off with my ribs, the plastic bolt heads just snapped clean off. This was good, as it meant the screen survived n one piece with only tiny scratch and I only had a minor fractured rib. I hazard that stainless bolts would have put up more resistance, resulting in more plastic damage, maybe more rib damage...

The only downside with cheapo generic acyrilic bolts off ebay is the heads can discolour from the sun after a year or two. But then at couple of quid for a dozen, who cares, just buy some fresh ones! That said most sets I bought were oten a bit on the long side, could never be arsed cutting them down, so they poked through by about 1 cm on the inside, minor annoyance.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Tyre sizes and choices
« on: 02 October 2020, 06:32:04 pm »
Metzeler M7RR's were always my favourites. Loads of grip, great on those spirited rides and grand through the winter. Though they won't last as long as Pilot Roads of Z8 / Z6's, used to get get about 6-7k out of M7RR's vs 11-12k out of Z6 and Z8's.

FZ6 / Fazer / Re: Preferred tyres on the FZ6?
« on: 24 August 2020, 09:24:19 pm »
Went for Metzler Roadtec 01 SE's in the end. Opted for touring longevity over the sporty grip of M9RR's. Nonetheless, liking the Roadtec 01 SE's a lot, been riding all round Wales including in some of this crappy wet weather. Holding up great, give lots of confidence, plenty of grip for touring. I'm not one to tip a bike right over, get my knee down and scrub every last bit of chicken strips off, but I definitely like these Metzler's. I certainly prefer their profile and feel compared to Road 5's.

If you can wait a week, I can measure that part when I get back home. Pretty that's the part that was taken out of my forks when I had some Racetech Emulators and springs fitted, so should be sat in a box in my shed.

I put a set of Renthal 758 ultra lows on my old Fazer.  Pics and write up here: https://www.beginnerbiker.com/2015/06/renthal-bars-758-ultra-low-handlebar-review/

Definitely lower and wider than stock though, but very useable and no hassles with fouling tank/fairing. Couldn't tell you if other Renthal's are closer to stock Fazer bars though.

22
...and a 4 degree ignition advancer, I've also got a set of Hyperpro fork springs to install.
Boots definitely full :thumbup
I'm not familiar with the 4 degree ignition advancer mod, what's the gain with this one? I see they're cheap on ebay, easy to fit? Worth fitting to my FZ6 S2? Can you point me to some more info.

FZ6 / Fazer / Preferred tyres on the FZ6?
« on: 24 June 2020, 12:37:09 pm »
Been running Michilin Road 5's for last 1.5 years on my FZ6 S2, they're not bad, lasted well (over 10k). But never really had the confidence to really tip the bike into bends like I used to with my FZS600 on Metz M7RR's. A while ago, I did have confidence hit with a low side spin up when pulling out of a junction in a hurry when the Road 5s were still cold, so it could all just be in my head.

Anyways, the Road 5s nearly worn out now, contemplating going back to Metzeler M7RR or their new M9RR's. Figured they'd be a bit stickier than Road 5's, but still reasonable all rounders for all weathers, even if they likely won't last as long.

What do you have on your FZ6?
What do you prefer on it and why?Anyone tried the M7RR or M9RRs on the FZ6?

(can of worms opened, go!)

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Replace boxeye fairing with Foxeye?
« on: 07 June 2020, 12:01:47 pm »
I just noticed this post Arfa - are you sure about the Fox Eye fairing - we have both a Fox Eye 600 and a FZS 1000 and the fairings are definitely not the same ??
Ah, yes you are right. It's just the head light cluster and mirrors that are common. Cowling - is not.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Buying an FZS600 - help please!
« on: 03 June 2020, 11:19:45 pm »
Ask yourself why they really removed the fairing? Was is dropped? Or was it really someone wanting a custom look? Check fairing, headlight cluster, wiring loom, mirrors, main square bracket and two side brackets are included, if you want to convert it back. Check the mounts on the frame haven'tbeen ground off too, to give a 'cleaner cafe racer look bro'.
Check past MOT advisories have been sorted. If not, it gives you a clue the seller hasn't maintained it well, or just bodged things to make do. If so, you'll keep uncovering more crap that'll cause you grief in the future.
Other things to check:Front sprocket nut, check if the recall fatter nut has been fitted, or at least the original nut hasn't come off in past and it's since been bodged. It's common to find it's been welded on (which might explain why the chain not being sorted out...)
Check back brake is not seized and is good. It needs regularly cleaning and TLC or it can catch all the road crap and seize up. Many swap on a blue spot FZS1000 rear brake in such cases.

Sounds like downpipe will need replacing, not a show stopper though. £200 should get you a set of stainless pipes. But fitting can be a bitch if the header bolts snap - so check if they look like a mess of corrosion.
Check condition of all water hoses, if any cracked/brittle - there's no good source of silicone replacements.Check if still original rubber brake hose - if so they'll need replacing at this age, but that's a cheapish job (~£60 parts + ~2hrs labour)
Rear shock could be due refresh if still original (red one). If not hugger fitted, check if its all crudded up and corroded down there.
Check other usual suspects, no oil on forks, check oil colour in window, check brake pads replaced, age of tyres, rust in tank, any random crash damage etc.

Either way, be fussy, if it all smells like a bodge-fest, just walk away, there's plenty of Fazer's about to choose from.
