Title: Front indicators for the back.
Post by: vinnyb on 17 September 2017, 08:25:10 pm
I've been looking for short rear indicators to replace the originals because my throwovers sit on them and bend them down. Looking on Ebay, it seems like the front indicators fit on the rear too and are obviously that bit shorter. So has anyone on the forum done this? I don't want to go with mini LEDs and thought these would keep the standard look if they fit properly. Thanks

i dont see a reason why they wouldnt fit as the 'gap fillers' you buy when fitting stubby indis fit both front and back universaly
there is a possibility that the wires might be a different length but nothing a little solder and extra wire wouldnt fix (if shorter on front ones)

Might be worth looking into MOT rules, i think there might be an issue with them having to be a certain distance apart.

Might be worth looking into MOT rules, i think there might be an issue with them having to be a certain distance apart.

just googled this

Motorcycle Indicators
Indicators must be fitted to a motorcycle and emit only orange light
They must flash on and off, not just dim and brighten
They must flash between 60 and 120 times per minute
They must be visible when riding or have a functioning idiot light
They must be securely fitted and so must the switch
They must not be adversely affected by the operation of another lamp or the horn

Motorcycles Registered Pre-1986

Any motorcycle first registered before 1st August 1986 does not need indicators to pass an MOT

this question was raised,  (dates back to 2011)

What is the minimum spacing of rear indicators, I have bought a E rated rear light with built in indicators and are now facing a fine for having the lights under the suposed minimum of 18 inches apart, the light was listed as being legal for use on UK roads, was the cop just guessing? could you clarify please.

Cheers

Hi Tony. All I can tell you is that we failed one when these type of lights came out… We were subsequently told, by VOSA, that we should in fact pass this type of light as long as it is EU marked. So I would say that in this instance the Police are wrong

dont think there is a distance thing as long as they are visible (not behind numberplate) or together (inside brake lightswouldnt worry about mot rules on that one otherwise no-one would ever change them to stubbys
could you imagine the arsehole who would fail you for having indi's 1cm closer than EU regs lol

this is suposedly a email from vosa reguarding an enquiry into integrated tail units (2012)

Dear Mr Berry,
[/size]Thank you for your email enquiry dated 22nd  April, 2012 concerning the MOTtest. These aftermarket lamps do not meet the requirements of The Road Vehicles(Lighting) Regulations 1989 as amended and should fail an MOT test.  Thelegislation requires that motorcycle rear direction indicators have aminimum spacing between illuminating surfaces of 180mmWe are  not aware of any such lamps being E marked, but there is a bigproblem with imported goods having counterfeit markings.I hope this information has assisted you with your enquiry, but if you haveany further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.Kind Regards

You can take the original indicators apart and shorten the stem and then rebuild them with a spacer under the nut inside the mudguard. I did that to mine when I fitted non-fango panniers. Only shortened by about 2cm but enough to make a difference

I actually have that integrated tail light/indicators, but i left on the originals as well.
As it is primarily a commuter bike i just want to be seen.
The indicator part on the tail light is not that great to be honest, and a weird colour too.

From the SVA testers manual (2010) the details are:

Minimum distance apart = 180mm
Maximum from rear light = 300mm

Loads of room for moving them or making them bigger/smaller.

Strange… that doesn't quite tally with Schedule 7 of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations Act 1989 (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/schedule/7/made) which specifies only the separation between rear indicators must be at least 240 mm (and 300 mm for the front).
Front indicators must also be at least 100 mm from a foglight or dipped beam headlight, there is no requirement for rear indicators to have any separation from tail or brake lights.

I'd interpret the MSVA manual to mean the rear indicators must be within 300 mm of the rear of the motorcycle rather than the rear lamp.
Another interesting point is that it prohibits HID headlights. :)

:agree

The 300mm element is probably "from the rear". I thought a word was missing as the manual I uploaded was a DRAFT copy I obtained several years ago when I was importing bikes that needed testing.

As for the 180mm - 240mm, VOSA seem to make up their own rules sometimes. The 1989 regs may have been updated since then though.

Hi Folks, thanks for all the replies, I think what I need to do is take one of my front indicators off and try it on the back. I'll have a go at it when I get a couple of hours and some half decent weather.

get some plus gas or something on those rear indicator nuts
went to see about chopping them down as i have just shaved my number plate (sold my front indis)
siezed solid and dont want to break them so just soaked in plus gas to wait another day

remember that sva/msva is very different from MOT and is constantly changing from what i read in kit car magazine (i know car but its still vosa)

I got the impression that the fronts just clipped into the fairing and the rears are held on with a nut on a threaded shaft in the indicator

the front ones are held on by a nut inside the fairing

.It does not matter how they are held on as the holes are the same size.

all 4 + relay included for under £15 (forget the relay and change the bulbs to the ones you have)
ok they aint oem fzs600 but should fit 99.8%sure , still look oem to the untrained eye, and look a little bit sharper in my opinion
(i say that by shape as there is no reference to size)
