I’m about to have a go at changing the Coolant.
Any advice, suggestions, gotchas etc..?
Had a look on Pats page and a search of YouTube but there doesn’t seem to be anything around.
Maybe it’s dead easy then?
Looking at the drain bolt it looks like a right b’stard part to refit.

The drain bolt is shouldered so will fit into a long 10mm socket and you can use that to position it up between the headers and start the thread. Just be careful not to cross it, obviously. :)
Other than that, it's a simple job. Drain, flush, refill and ride.

Thanks Mike, i’ll Give it a go.
I notice the coolant is currently green and I’ve got silicate free OAT from Halfords.
I assume that’s OK?

You might just want to pull the hoses off to drain it if there’s any chance of the drain bolt shearing off.

Been a while since I changed coolant in mine and I believe there is a type to avoid but can't recall what off the top of me nut.
Just check the manual and go with that. :)

Recommended is ethylene glycol antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors for aluminum engines.Most important is that it is Silicate and Boric free.
Not recommended to mix IAT and OAT.
I usually stick with Castrol, Comma or Silkolene

IAT?
It’s definitly Silcate Free and says its a ethylene glycol antifreeze.
No mention of Boric free though.
I did the change, complete with a good flush.
Clean water was coming out but I couldn’t see a way to get all the green fluid from the expansion tank as when I put the hose in it the water came straight out the overflow!
Still a bit concerned that the old was green and the new is orange though.
Hope I haven’t buggered anything up!

I did flush it out, but like I said there was some green fluid still in the expansion tank.

Get a length of hose and a syringe to empty the header tank. Flush with fresh water, repeat the emptying process and you'll be good to go.
Personally, I'd stick with the green stuff. Good enough for the first 16 years of my Fazer's life, so no reason to change to something different if the green is still available.

So I rang the support line written on the side of the container. (Went through to Mobil i think)
Their view was that the green coolant would have been OAT based anyway.
He reckoned all was good and the only problem with putting the wrong stuff in would be the rust inhibitors could be neutralised.
And that would take lots of miles too.
As I'd flushed the old coolant out anyway his view was that any risk was minimal.
Just to make sure I'll renew it next year to dilute it down further. Maybe.

I think that nowadays there's so much more info out there, we read more, query what we're about to do, sometimes rightly, but most of the time just wind ourselves up about nothing. The bottom line I suppose, is better to be safe than sorry. :thumbup
