FZS600 Fazer / Exhaust Headers
« on: 29 March 2024, 01:38:17 pm »
Got an advisory for an exhaust leak and it's on the webbed section of the headers where they meet.  Was going to explore option of welding it as I'm aware of the nightmares people have with the studs.

Decided to have a tentative fiddle and to my amazement (relief) all 8 nuts turn. The ones I can see it's definitely nut and not stud that's turning.

So....should i replace the nuts only or when I fit new headers should I remove the studs and replace too?

FZS600 Fazer / Rear Brake Service Kit
« on: 12 February 2024, 01:21:50 pm »
The time has come where my rear brake is now longer functioning as it should.  To my knowledge it's never needed any remedial work so it's time to have it serviced.
Lacking the skills to do it myself I'm entrusting my local garage with it.  The said it would be cheaper to get a kit myself.

Question is....do I need the full kit with bleed nipple etc... or just a kit with the seals?  I'm going to have the pistons changed too.
Been advised to avoid Ebay ones as they aren't the best but I'll be guided by yourselves on that front?

And advice on kits would be most welcome.  And pads whilst I'm there.....

FZS600 Fazer / Rear Brake Servicing
« on: 15 April 2023, 03:08:20 pm »
Just had an MOT and got advisory for the rear caliper sticking.  To my knowledge it's never been serviced.

Looking for advice on this. Not competent to do it myself and don't want to go down the wrong path.

There are places online advertising a refurb service of between 50-75 quid.  Not sure how detailed they go.
Should I change the pistons even if they look ok?
Are the kits available online any good?
Anybody on here do them as a project?
Should I change the pads at the same time?

Etc...

FZS600 Fazer / Voltage Issues
« on: 16 September 2022, 07:23:00 pm »
Rode into work today and went to bike to come home.....flat.

It's been faultless all summer and the issue is clearly to do with the lights being used now it's getting dark at commuting times.

So I'm after advice.

What should the voltage of the battery be:-

1.  When bike is off
1a.  When bike is off (lights on)
2.  When engine ticking over (lights off)
3.  When revved (lights off)
4.  When engine ticking over (lights on)
5.  When revved (lights on)

Once I've an idea of the values I'll go round disconnecting each light to see if it's a bulb pulling too much current.
I used to leave the light switch to on when I turned the ignition off and this was never an issue.  If I do it now the bike is dead within hours so it's still drawing a current.

Battery is the original as far as i know. 13k miles.

Or if anybody has any other ideas.

FZS600 Fazer / Speed Related Whine
« on: 18 April 2022, 10:20:50 pm »

After a winter being laid up and a recent MOT I've started using the old girl again.

I've noticed I have a speed related whine.  When I slow at a junction the noise slows accordingly.

Seems to be from the front.

Some things to check would be ideal.

Could it be the front brake binding?
Speedo cable dry?
Front Sprocket?

FZS600 Fazer / Centre Stand Issue
« on: 28 March 2022, 04:39:30 pm »
Just had the old girl MOT'd.

Got an advisory for the centre stand being stiff and to be fair it is.  Don't use it so never noticed.  Had a good look underneath and it's a bit scabby.

Suspect it's a bit of corrosion between stand and frame with the bolts being also looking a touch tired.

The garage told me it needs sorting ASAP as the stand could come down whilst riding.  This clearly makes me nervous but using my limited brain I'm not convinced it would just flap down, more the other case that it's more likely to stay up?  Surely that's what the spring is for.  I guess if the spring came off then yes it could come down with gravity.

Any advice appreciated.

FZS600 Fazer / Dead Battery?
« on: 23 April 2021, 11:01:50 pm »
Bike laid up over winter during which time I forgot to charge it so it did go flat.

Been using it since beginning of month.  13mile journey each way.  On one journey I used the heated grips.  As I got near work the dials stopped working on idle but came back with revs.  Instantly thought battery was flat from using grips.

When I went to return home the bike was flat.  Wouldn't start.  Had enough power to attempt to turn over but did a couple of turns before making an odd buzzer type sound.
Push started it and it was fine on the way home.

Charged battery and all was good for last fortnight.

Used the bike yesterday no issues.

Tonight it's flat again and doing the same thing.  Couple of turns before the odd noise.

Is this common with Fazers and low batteries.  When I've previously flattened the battery it's been totally dead.

My concern is that I've an electrical fault draining the battery.  I actually hope it's just that the battery is past it's best.  Could be the original one fitted.  2001 plate with 11k miles.

FZS600 Fazer / Sprocket Advice
« on: 01 March 2021, 06:53:58 pm »
Had an advisory on the rear socket today. Only got 12k on the clock.

Is this normal wear?

Any advice on replacement, is it worth going up or down teeth?  Any brands to avoid?

Is it an easy job to replace? I've no way of splitting the chain so is it possible to replace without doing this?

FZS600 Fazer / Where To Get Headlight/Front Fairing Frame
« on: 17 November 2020, 09:56:16 am »
Back early this year my Boxeye rather inexcusably fell over outside a petrol station.

After lovingly restoring her with the help of some of you guys all has been well until....

My mate says to me, why is your front fairing lop sided.  I though he was having a laugh at first but no, it's higher on one side than the other.  Having just stripped it all down thinking I'd not lined it up correctly I can now see the issue.
The headlight/fairing frame is bent.  Where it comes from the stock it has two arms, the top one veers off to one side so it's out of alignment.  The fits with the side it fell on.
I've tried persuading it with a lump hammer but it's quite tough metal.

So...anybody have one spare of know where I can get one.  Found one on flea bay but not brilliantly priced and it's as scabby as hell so it'll need powder coating.
I think I'm right in saying the Foxeye one is different so I'm limited in the years of bikes I can source one from.

Any help would be appreciated.

FZS600 Fazer / Gear Indicator Setup
« on: 21 February 2020, 02:36:48 pm »
So after about 6 months of getting around to it I've finally installed my gear change indicator.

Struggled with the wiring as the Chinese instructions are naff and talk of wiring colours was misleading. However I'm confident it's right as it initialises.

To set it up you have to ride and change into each gear. However my insurance doesn't start until next week so I can't do that and thought I'd do it in the garage on the centre stand.

It doesn't however work. Just sits trying to learn first gear.

Question is, would this be because the bike isn't detecting any speed? Must admit every video and instruction I've seen all do it on the road.

For Sale & Wanted / Free - Fzs600 Front Fairing
« on: 03 February 2020, 07:11:18 pm »
Following my little spill I've a slightly damaged front fairing if anybody wants it. It's got a piece missing on the left hand side and is scuffed but structurely sound.

Silver in colour.

Free to good home.

FZS600 Fazer / Rear Indicator Removal
« on: 25 January 2020, 09:07:24 pm »
Is there an easy way of removing the rear indicators?

Unbolting is easy but then the electrics disappear up a tube in the tail and don't seem to appear behind the toolkit area.

FZS600 Fazer / Front Fairing Decals
« on: 25 January 2020, 09:05:08 pm »
Is there a current source for front fairing decals.

Need silver with black shadowing.

FZS600 Fazer / Does anybody have......
« on: 25 January 2020, 09:03:58 pm »
1. Any of the plastic rivet nuts that hold the infill panels to the front fairing.

2. The two silver bolts that hold the front fairing to the frame near the tank?

3. An original rear left indicator in good condition with no scuffs?

FZS600 Fazer / WeMoto Parts
« on: 23 January 2020, 08:26:18 pm »
Are the parts identical to Yamaha originals?

I need to order both left hand side indicators and a mirror.  I don't want to find they look different to the other side.

Failing that it'll be an Ebay job.

FZS600 Fazer / Help Repairing My Beloved FZS
« on: 22 January 2020, 06:33:01 am »
So I took the bike in for it's MOT. Passed without advisory.  She's a 2001 with just 10k on the clock and in immaculate condition.  Filled her up with petrol on way home and as I turn out the petrol station the arse end kicks out and she goes down on the left hand side.

To say I'm devastated would be an understatement.

Damage sustained.

Alternator casing smashed.
Mirror Scuffed
Front Fairing Smashed
Front Indicator ripped off
Rear fairing scuffed
Bar end scuffed
Clutch Lever scuffed
Rear indicator scuffed
Gear pedal bent
Rear pillion peg bent
Tank dented and scuffed

I rang the insurance who wrote it off in an instant.  Initially I was happy with this as I had spat my dummy out and that was me done for biking.

I've calmed a little and have now put the recovery on hold whilst I assess the costs to repair.  It's looking promising but I'm stuck on a few bit and could do with some help.

1.  Are the parts from Wemoto genuine Yamaha parts.  They have the clutch lever, indicators and mirror.
2.  Has anybody fitted one of the front fairings from Ebay.  Comes from Poland.  Looks a good copy.
3.  Where can you but the plastic rivets that hold the front infil panels from?
4.  Anybody got a perfect rear left pillion peg?
5.  Likewise for a alternator cover although I can get a used one from Ebay and have it stripped and powder coated.
6.  Can you get the metal screws the hold the front fairing to the frame near the petrol tank?
7.  Is there a company that can remove dents from petrol tanks?  It's similar to a car park trolley dink on a car door.  Think the handlebars caused it.

I'm basically throwing myself at the mercy of you all to help me through and get her back to normal.

Advice getting the front nose cone off would be useful too.  I think I'm nearly there but is there a guide on here somewhere?

FZS600 Fazer / Clock Lights Dim
« on: 21 October 2019, 07:26:43 pm »
I'm not sure if I'm imaging it or not but the lights on my clocks now appear quite dim.  Same for the odometer display.

She doesn't get used in the dark during the summer so it's not like I've noticed it before.  Given I only bought the bike in Feb and used it rarely in the dark there's a good chance they've always been like it.

Does anybody else think that the display is on the dim side?

FZS600 Fazer / Fender Extender
« on: 24 February 2019, 07:44:40 am »
Are they worth it?
Do they make a difference?

I'm thinking they possibly do but am worried it'll spoil the look of the bike. They only seem to come in black, not sure it'll go with my silver steed.

If they are worth it any recommendations?
Do the adhesive ones stay stuck or is drilling the best way?

Whilst I'm here what about belly pans? Loads more expensive so an expensive addition if they're of little use.

FZS600 Fazer / Fitting Spotlights
« on: 23 January 2019, 07:03:48 pm »
I'm sure it's probably been covered here already but I'm planning on fitting a couple of spotlights to compliment my current headlights (boxeye with twin modification).
What's the easiest way to wire these in.
I'm happy to have them permanently on with the headlights or should I use an independent switch for them?

Which wires do I tap into?

Introduction / New Owner In Louth
« on: 08 January 2019, 10:40:59 pm »
Hi,
Just on the verge of becoming a Fazer owner with a deal struck on a 2001 fzs600.

Just before I part with my cash I'll throw a debate open.
Which bike should I get?

01 fzs600 with 8.5k. Sold by a work colleague & has been well looked after
08 fz6 with 50k. Sold by a retired gent who has maintained it irrespective of cost.

There is £350 difference.

I know there'll be views about which is the better bike.  It'll be used for a 25 mile round commute all year round. That's it.

Any thoughts?

Also anybody local to Louth or Grimsby areas?

FZS600 Fazer / New Owner In Louth
« on: 08 January 2019, 09:14:03 pm »
Hello all,

I'm just finalising the purchase of a 2001 model with just 8.5k on the clock. It's owned by a work colleague and it's been well looked after.
She's silver and totally standard.

I'm planning on doing the twin headlight wiring trick & replacing the front sprocket nut which are things I've read about.
Is there anything else I need to be aware of or should do?

Anybody local to Louth or Grimsby?
