FZS600 Fazer / Ignition switch bolts
« on: 06 April 2016, 03:56:04 pm »
Hello again .
Haven't been on for a while. sorry.

Question.  Fitting new (used) 7 wire ignition switch to my 03. (Not started yet though- she's in constant use- at least until the existing ignition barrel fails altogether.)
Right. I know all about drilling out the old screws etc. stud extaction and whathaveyou. that's all fine - I'm in engineering.
No. my question is, does anyone know what size the replacement bolts will need to be ? ie: are they M8, and by what length.and do they have to be countersunk?
Asking in advance, coz I can get some 316L Stainless cap-heads from work.(M6/M8/M10) I  just want to have all the bits there ready before I start. (I know Iknow, these could be removed by the Pikeys, but I don't want to use any snap off type of stuff, in case I need to do it again myself. remember - this will be a second hand unit I'm fitting anyway. My intention was to Loctite the cap heads in, then fit some black rubber caps over them to hide the shineyness (Is that even a word???)
PS. sorry if there is already a thread on this one - but I couldn't see owt.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Mornin top geezers.
Thankyou for all the inputs.
Tried the majority of these checks. No joy.
Then this morning, the silly buzzing/indicators trying to all light at once/no headlights - scenario reappeared.
Managed to narrow the buzz down to the headlight primary relay ! It was a sod, but I managed to ease it off it's mount, via removing the right hand fairing inner.
(Thought I was in for a full front end out job)
Anyway - about to test the relay. Methinks it might be screwed, as the wiring is A1. still buzzed in my hand, whilst wiggling the contacts.(Good job wife wasn't around ! LOL) Trouble is - bike is needed tomorrow for work. I May have a 12v relay somewhere in the depths of my workshop, which could get me away, till the Bikeshop is in range. Or perhaps a temp. manual switch between the bigger terminals - (Kind of Override switch instead of relay).
That's if this still buzzes whilst under test off the bike!
Knowing my luck - the bugger'll work now !
Will keep you posted lads - cheers.

Aye - multimeter at the ready for this weekend. Since the last post ( not the army one !)  Taking notice of how/when it occurs, may have learned a bit more about it. It appears to happen, about 30 seconds into any journey, but after ticking over to warm up for maybe a minute or so. (I don't have to be riding, or even sat on it, for stuff to happen. I was thinking, could it be the plug on the fuel level sensor ( the only thing I ever unplugged, for tank removal, to vac the carbs. But that was about a year ogo ! (Checking that tomorrow - regardless). But ..... It seems to be happening  once the battery is once again full, after using the starter motor. (Filled up at the Shell "daylight robbery" station this morning. It had taken a dicky fit getting the lights to come on steady, after I started it at home, but then was fine, for the 3 mile run up to the petrol station. I filled to a good 1/2" below the neck, paid, started up, and switched on first sidelights.(fine). then onto dip. wallop ! No Lights. Indicators all lit fully(not flashing) for  about 3 seconds. But as I was stationary, I could now hear a buzz from somewhere on the bike. Not a short circuit buzz. more of a "relay can't make it's mind up" kind of fast buzz, similar to 50Hz buzz. This stopped and the lights came on as normal. I tried full beam. flasher, hazards, horn, brakes front & rear. All normal. So though balls to it, and set off for work. A mile later, lost all lights again, this time for a good 5-6 seconds. All dash lamps then go through the startup sequence, and back to normal, but the clock, and the trip had reset to zero again. Anyway, is there such a thing as a charge relay, or some such? if so, I would suspect that was sticking/faulty. Bike charges fine. All wiring/plugs I can find  seem ok. no green crap. nothing loose. Switchgear seems not to be faulty, and has been sprayed with Servisol. Ignition switch seems ok, although I did have a series of drop-outs last year, but that lost the engine too, and after servisol, and a good set of on-off-on-off cycles, it's been fine. I've sprayed it and done this again after my last post. But it doesn't seem to be the problem. PS. If I disconnect the fuel level sensor (Which may be at least oneof my  problems) what effect would that have on the other electronical gubbinzery ? coz I have a mind to temporarily kill it this w/end, and see if it sorts the other lighting probs out.  Don't ask me to Ohms it this weekend - me tank's full !!!

What would you rather bee or a wasp ?!?!?!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Slow punctures - how slow is 'slow'?
« on: 23 November 2014, 05:07:59 pm »
Hi.
I had one leaking at about the same speed.
I suppose - it's a slow puncture, if you are going to pump it up again, at regular intervals. It's a quick puncture - if you are a week away from a pump !
So it's all a bit subjective.
Mine was from  a lagging screw from work. they are a roughly 1/2" long self tapper. and they lurk everywhere that tyres dare to run. They are JUST long enough to get the pointy bit all the way in.
I too had the tiny bubbles gig.
As I'd had it plugged at 300 miles from new, and as he said Only one plug per tyre, and as I was only at about 800 miles in, I decided to attempt a repair.
(After all - I've had bigger bubbles coming from a rim/bead leak !)
I fixed mine on the bike, and ADMITTEDLY - i was lucky.
Once home, I found the leak, and marked it with a cross.
I have some very fine nozzzles for superglue bottles, that I use for rc model building. so I took a nozzle, and forced it to fit onto my lad's "Dunlop Push-iron Puncure repair kit" Glue tube.
It being friday evening an- all , I let the tyre down. then carefully, so as not to snap it off,  I shoved / wiggled / shoved the fine nozzle into the hole as far as it would go. then screwed the glue tube to it. now, keeping max pressure on the glue tube, I slowly withdrew the nozzle, squeezing glue as I went. Once done, chuck the nozzle. put cap back on glue. and retire to local alcohol consuming emporium.

Saturday morning ( maybe 14 / 16 hrs later) , I fired up the compressor  :evil The neighbours curtains must all be on air rams, cos they all open when the compressor is on.

So far, I haven't lost a single pund - and that is from about 2 months ago. Job done !
So I spose you could call that an extremely slooooooooow puncture now  :lol )
Hope that helps.
Gaz.

FZS600 Fazer / weird lectrickle probs
« on: 23 November 2014, 04:43:33 pm »
Hia Lads.
Was wondering if anyone else has had this, or maybe something similar? about 3 weeks ago, filled up, to roughly bottom of the neck, as usual. When climbing any hills, "fuel low" orange light  blink s5 times, stops, then repeats. this goes on, until the fuel is down to what I'd call - "not full", or I'm going downhill.
About 2 weeks ago, same thing again, but this time both time clock and trips were at zero when I got to work. I reset, and they seemed fine. Ok then for about a week or so.
This last week. Traveling along on the flat,  in traffic, at about 30mph, suddenly, lights extinguished, at same time, all 4 indicators came on - dimly. After  1 second of this, they returned to normal for about 1 second, then did the whole routine again. then - normal ops resumed, but the clock and trip had zeroed again.
Checked every visible connection, with seat / side panels off. Battery is new this year, has sparklingly clean  contacts, and all things are tight.
yanked all fuses. checked the sockets, sprayed them with servisol, as I did with everything else I've messed with.
Incidentally, whenever anything like this happens, the lump just carrries on purring away, oblivious to any faults.
This morning, seemed fine. was on dip, and flashed a guy out into the traffic. everything flickered, and the dips stayed off, until I let go of the flash trigger.
Normal again.
Tried it again. Normal. Unable to cause it to happen at will. Stripped handlebar switches off. checked everything. all looks clean, dry, fine. Servisol'led & replaced.
Nowt worse than a bloody intermittant - is there.

PS. the "everything flashing in sequence "-thing - seemed like the bike was trying to tell me something was knackered. Although I could be wrong - it seemed too accurately timed to be just a fault.
Can't see owt in the books about this.
Just don't want dead lecktrickery - She's gotta get me to work n back in the dark !
So - did anyone else suffer this (or similar) and if so - what was the fix?
Cheers in advance.
Gaz.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Down pipes
« on: 09 April 2014, 10:31:42 pm »
Back to the top of the subject. I got my stainless downpipes from sandybikespares (ebay). They have been spot on so far (about 1500 miles), BUT... the header gaskets, although appearing to be fine quality, keep freeing off in the bores( I suppose they are gradually collapsing down, and then they rattle in the slot when below 3k revs.Seriously - it sounds like you are about to drop a rod ! I Tightened studs a bit more ( even though I had given them a proper Post heat cycle re-torque). It cured everything for about 1.3k. Gradually it has come back to haunt. Tonight on the way home, as I passed parked cars, the reflected sound was akin to someone shaking a bag o' spanners next to me ! Tightened again. Cured again. I'm now well off the torque setting. So I won't be doing it any more. The garage said I should have put OEM seals in. Well you just don't do you. not when these came with the pipes. But I'm gonna - next time it rattles. So in a nutshell - the pipes are fine. I was not overly impressed with the gaskets - that's all. And if yours suddenly sounds like Cozy Powell riding his  hi-hats when he's pissed - take a breather. Might not be a rod. or cam chain tensioner etc.etc. Just check the exhaust nuts are nipped up propperly first! Careful - Not too much though !!!

Never had my carbs right. Above 2thou it's as sweet as a nut, but around or below, it misses and chugs, like a lazy plug or something. Damned annoying when trickling in traffic. It chocks like a tractor, and pulling away smooths it out. Does the same thing parked and in neutral. I've vacced them. Shop has vacced them. Had them balanced. Waste of money - exactly the same.(Unless they did sod-all and just charged me for the privilege! wouldn't be surprised) Anyway - mine has the needle wavering up and down when at tickover. I've had it wavering now for 2 and a bit years. I am resigned to just saying "oh sod it !" - and putting up with it.
It never gets better, or worse, and has no apparent ill affect on the bike. Just get above it on the rev counter when in traffic.

:rolleyes  O wow ! embarrassing that. Must be my engineering background - fully expecting all moving parts to be "Physically retained" ! (Although now I've eyeballed it - well yes - where was it going to go anyway ? :rollin
Anyway - Got home this teatime. Biggest pizza box I've seen since I waz propper greedy, with the little  Dog hiding in the corner. Looks totally different to the original, with it's nice Dalek - like slots around it.(T'other was just smooth - bore). You were right. Propper "lump of urine " to do. I bet I was 5 mins to pitstop it out & new one in. Took longer to get the Arse end strapped down ! Now nicely GP greased, tangs correctly located (After a bit of a faff about). Back up and running. I even tightened my downpipes to stop the "engine is trying to destroy itself " sound, caused by a wayward gasket in No. 3 port, flapping in the draught('Speshly on tick over). Amazing how the downpipes amplify this fluttering noise. My mechanic mate diagnosed " soon to give birth to con-rod "! So that's done too -nice and quiet again. And all before er-indoors shouted " Oy - fatso - Tea's ready.
Paid a bit extra.
F.Y.I. AJ Suttons (via fleabay) had it for 25 spondooliks, and DPD delivery. so I bit the bullet, rather than muck about. Sorted ! Thanks again all.  :D  I'll be back.

Cheers Lads. Bought the dog.Just waiting for it landing now.
Maybe here tonight.
Q. So how is it held into the unit then? Circlip maybe?
I only ask cos I'm really limited for time, and am using the bike for work, so it's going to be an sas job (Quick out-quick in) Can't afford to be off t' road at all.
MOT due on 18th, so will want to do the swap before then (Yes he does check it on the rolling road when he tests me anchors- which are also up for some pre MOT  bleeding - incidentally)
I didn't get a good look at the knackered dog when they were doing me nu tyre, so was just unsure how to strip the old dog out of it's housing- thats all.
(I'm an engineer, so am ok with competency etc. Got all the tackle,Just haven't attacked this particular job before, and don't wanna screw the pooch (Dog) if ya follows....)
PS. I do know about getting it back into the wheel right ! That's a given. It wasnt me wot dun it wrong lasdt time, as I'd never had the wheel out.
One bonus came out of all this though.....I thought the squeeking sound was me wheel bearings. It was obviously the loose dog's lugs rubbing round inside the unit.
Padgetts Superglue job had given me about a weeks running though, but I wasn't counting on it. Rightly so - apparently.
Thanks again for the help. Nice to know you're there lads.

Hia lads.
Screendumped the yam part for the numbers. Pagetts fitted my new front tyre about a fortnight ago. When he pulled the wheel out, bits of  dog fell out all over the floor ! (Wasn't his fault - it has been squeeling like a pig for a while) Could only rescue a single tang, and he superglued it back on, and warned me these things are an arm and a leg to buy!(I assume he's talking about the whole unit - of which the rest of mine is fine)so my questions are - how much is it for just that bit? where to buy without getting my pants pulled down over the price, and is it easy enough to swap out for the old one?Circlip? push fit? wifes Y fronts elastic? what?
I didn't want to touch mine whilst his superglue was holding - until halfway home tonight. Speedo flicked a couple of times, and dropped dead. I reckon the previously superglued (Single) tang finally gave up the ghost.
MOT on the 21 st (sods law!) so need to act fast - cos he does check it on the rolling road thing......
Regards - Gazbo

:eek Dunno what this face is sposed to signify, but it looks like the mirror - view of a pillion, when the lights turn green,so I thought I'd shove it in for the laugh !
Thanks for the info Peoples. Oil & Filter is sorted now. Bought a filter pliers thingy from Halfords.£11 quid-ish.Loads easier to grab the filter than with the usual chain job. Swapped the plugs too. made no difference.Still a bit rough running on tickover, and up to around2000rpm.It will run rough all the way up to around 5, if you keep the throt down on the primaries, and let the engine catch up.Soon as you give it a fraction more, it goes smoooooth !
Real pain in traffic.
Did a vac check. Right two were way above left two, so after finding a long enough screwdriver, all four are now spot-on. Again - made no difference.Still the bloody same rough low end.
To put it into words, its like saying "BarberBarberBarber". trouble is it's orribly chain snatchy when trickling through traffic, slipping the clutch all the time, to try damping the effect, up to 15 mph.(which accounts for 50% of my journey home!) soon as I get off the primaries, it's like a swiss watch. Could it be a blocked primary, or maybe a mixture mis-match,on one cylinder? Mmm - I wonder...
Manuel - I don't got no car licence bro - never bothered with the 4 wheel-rustbuckets, so it's bike or bus for me.Or stop at 'ome !
( and theres no handlebars or wind in yer chops on a bus - so that idea can go swivel). PS. last time I tried the bus, which was "every 10 mins" - I stood for 3/4 of an hour in the wet stuff, only to hoof it the 3 miles into town, only to be passed by the glib git, as I got past the town hall !Never again!)
2 wheels - since '78, pass me Car test? - nah - too late !

Hia .
Sorry for the delay. (13 hour working days - not been home much lately !)
erm - yes - I did like the Harley. Just had a lower spine disc taken out at leeds last year, so the Sportster was spot on for riding position, and I did like the rumble. But camshaft bearing replacement price was a mortgage job, and the rear mudguard (fender haha) was rotten. and that was gonna be a national debt ! so I simply weighed it in.
My mate at work has a Spongebob (square lamps) which is sweet, and Pagetts had this foxeye  in, and did me a good deal.(same geezer I bought the harley from earlier - was glad to take it back).
Somebody had to !
Just about to change the engine oil. any recommendations guys?
PS - may be a while before I'm on again - so don't hold your Breaths !!!! Laters !

Hia all. Gazbo here.Been riding since '78. no car licence - just bikes. Just got my first FZS600 on an 03 plate. Mint.17 thou. balanced carbs at weekend. ( thanks to the "how to" article from somewhere on here!)sweet now (low end was lumpy to say the least. chain snatching when pulling away gently - not now though !) Just thought I'd introduce me-sen. Dewsbury west yorks. locals might have seen my plodding to and from work on an 'orrible orange 883 sportster, bought due to a slipped disk, had best riding position etc. Leeds specialist has removed the offending item now, so I'm a bit more shall we say - flexible.
Rip off britain has fleeced me for the last time with that bloody Harley. so Ive gone from riding an anti aircraft gun to an electric motor in one fell swoop.
Must say I'm impressed. last four was a GPZ550, about 15 yrs back. that seemed a bit more grunty on low end, so I'm still getting used to the Yam screemin' buzz! after the yank lump, It feels like I'm gonna drop a rod or something, very revvy engines these. Ive had vertical twins, two guzzi's, original triumphs, single cylinder jap two stroke stuff - you name it. This seems to be by far the most user friendly.Oh - and this is my first ever forum post, on any forum, so if I did it wrong, please forgive me. This is one area where I'm still on L plates.(my nickname is either Gazbo, or the Grim Reaper). (I dabble a bit with rock and blues guitar, and a bit of fast irish folk on mandolin, and I fly model aircraft - when I can, dowwn at the dewsbury club field).
There.so that's me then. 51 yrs young and still plodding. wife of same age (21 she reckons - yeah - dream on love! and one son (Dan) who will be fourteen this july.big as a house ! Harley suspension didn't like the two of us on board - kept bottoming on the sleepin plods !This one doesn't !
