Title: Anyone bought an MT10 or MT10SP?
Post by: Streetbudgie on 03 July 2019, 10:28:31 pm
I'm having a test ride Friday, I wondered if anyone else has moved from an FZ1S to an MT10 SP?
Any tips?

Yes, hang on tight when you hit 6000  :eek do you still have to leave money with the dealer? the last time I was going to have a test ride was at a BMW main dealer on a 1000RR they wanted £2000 pound,I honestly thought the bloke was joking,I was on a BMW forum at the time and it was the norm at certain dealers! needless to say I've yet to ride a 1000RR  :lol

Make sure there is plenty of fuel in it before you set off.  It is silly thirsty.

It’s very quick and will lift the front wheel in second, third and forth on the power.  Just bonkers.

The excess at my local Yamaha dealer was 500 quid.

The excess at the BMW dealer was 250 quid.

At Honda it was a grand.

Nobody wanted to swipe my credit card to reserve the excess.

At Triumph Glasgow the excess is 2 grand – I declined the offer of any test rides.  I told them no way was I going out for a test ride on a two-grand excess.  I have later been told they also want to swipe your card to reserve that 2 grand.  The sales person tried to convince me that 2 grand was fine as next door at Glasgow Ducati (same firm) it was 6 grand on the dearer machines.  I laughed and left.

Anyway, the MT10 is a cracking bike, but it’s just too mental for me.  Lovely riding position.  But if you try to thrash the thing it’s like being in a boxing match.  And I figure every 80 or 90 miles you’ll be looking for fuel.

The CB1000R felt a bit odd.  I felt perched on top of it.  It’s quick, it handles, it looks absolutely smashing, but sounds awful on the standard can and it just didn’t do it for me.

My left field choice was the new R1250R.  The riding position is lovely, very natural and all day comfortable.  The new shift cam boxer engine is just incredible.  It has shed loads of low down grunt, and this latest incarnation of the boxer must be the first that could be described as bonkers quick, but yet it doesn’t want to kill you all the time like the MT10.  The suspension feels soft and it takes care of all the potholes etc with ease yet I couldn’t upset it in the twisties. (test bike had optional active damping) The handling is excellent and with all that everywhere all the time torque you can make seriously quick progress with ease.  It feels nice, sounds great and makes comforting grumbling noises.  Smashing bike.  Oh sips the stuff, I had it for two hours, probably covered the best part of 100 miles and there was still plenty in the tank.

Had the road test today, on an MT10, hated it.
Too tall, felt like I was perched on it rather than sitting on a bike, a bit like riding a 70's trailie.
The worst part though has to be the engine, how have they taken a 4 cylinder engine and made it feel like a parallel twin?
Mode 1 is like a switch, everything or nothing, mode 2 was jerky as hell and mode 3 felt dull until you got the revs up to a point where you're breaking all the speed limits.
No useable torque until you're flying.

Overall it looks like plastic and didn't feel like a £15k bike.
I've told the garage to spend the £1k to fix my bike instead of spending £15k on a bike I don't think I'll ever get on with.

Haha your the first person (other than myself) I've heard that's not impressed by it.
I didnt find it as bad as you I just dont think it's anything special. Didnt feel as fast as my Fz1, definitely uglier and as you say it's the best part of 15k for what doesnt really feel like an upgrade.
I think if I you came from a 600 or maybe a sports bike then it would be more appealing but not when you already have the older version

You’ll probably get a new MT10 for 11K, you don’t have to pay 15K!
Why not take the R1250R or R1250RS for a spin.  You might just be surprised.  Nor do they feel cheap or plasticky.

The R1250r has got under my skin, the boxer engine is smooth and torquey and the bike is quick comfortable and is very flickable, I also like it’s charachter of  rocking the bike left when you blip the throttle.
I would have one tomorrow if something happened to my fazer thou.

Couldn't agree more, looks unfinished at the back and piecemeal at the front. Colours are abysmal.

Haha your the first person (other than myself) I've heard that's not impressed by it.

Make that two then. I found it really uncomfortable. I only took it out after saying to the salesman that it was uncomfortable in the showroom - he didn't believe me and said that once on the road I would love it because everyone else does, so I rose to the challenge and it was.... really uncomfortable. No give in the seat or suspension, crashed over everything and felt skittish. I only needed 5 minutes on it before turning it round and was grateful to be off it. It was 11 large at the time, I wouldn't give £50 for one.

Meanwhile, why not try the R1250R.
I think you might be pleasently surpised.

I very nearly popped up to the dealer last Sunday to place an order.  My impression after a 2hr test ride was that it’s a superb bike.

However, VNA has knee issues again right now.  I’m keen on hill walking, so I’m gutted I can’t get out.  I’m trying to get them working for me again, but, I might need cash for a private referral.  And if a specialist Orthopaedic surgeon can help, well even if I can get it done on the NHS, I’ll not be riding my bike for a while if I’m recovering from knee surgery.

So it’s on hold.  Might yet go for it for September, but more likely march - I think.

Even better really if your going for brand new as the first wave of models will be done with so any potential issues should be have been made apparent. Also theres a good chance you'll be able to pick up a pre reg at a discount 🤔

Or even better a 'nearly new' one with a few thousand miles on it and most of the depreciation taken care of

Wouldn’t think there would be too many ‘issues’.  The 1250 engine has already been fitted to the other boxers – the naked job being the last to get it, I think.  And the rest of the bike is more or less the same as the previous 1200.

Pre reg deals?  Not seen any dealers advertising them up here for a good while.  I know some of the big car dealers up here churn them out – seems to be some sort of bulk buy and sell em cheap arrangement with the importers. Doesn’t seem to be about meeting sales targets as it used to be.

Which brings me to BMW.  Get the impression the bikes are mostly to order – massive factory options list.  They did have one in the showroom but it was speced up past 15K with a lot of stuff I really don’t want.  They did say they would be selling their demo model soon – but they don’t get run in right, and everybody is jumping on and thrashing em – right?

Also I laugh when I look at used BMW ticket prices. :\

With the Japanese 4 I can go onto auto trader or e bay and see loads of new deals which will help me negotiate with my local dealer – or I could just buy in the North of England.

But I looked for BMW deals – nowt I could see!   Not to mention their PCP deals are not very attractive.

I’m wondering if they expect customers to pay RRP list price – we are BMW and all that….. :eek

 The Speed Twin is lovely.
But I think the nine T is even lovelier, it’s gotta be the coolest of the retro bikes.
The new T5 edition is just extra super lovely.

Fantastically lovely? No. It's a good looking bike in an odd looking way, like many BMWs. I like to keep my bikes clean so spokes are not welcome in my house.

I have owned Hondas over the years - no problems ever, perfectly reliable. I have owned Yamahas over the years - never let me down, not once. Kawasakis too - generally reliable but brakes seem to need constant attention to stop them binding. BMWs - one (Rockster) and it let me down and was expensive to fix. So what am I supposed to think?

I have a good friend that has a new BMW every two or three years and they have given him a variety of problems, so I, for one, am not a fan.

I think the spoked wheels look great.  But…..

I’ve ruled out a nine T as a daily ride because of them.  Those spokes are not sealed.  So the tubeless tyres have been fitted with inner tubes.  I suspect that means if you pick up a nail or a screw you have a very rapidly deflating tyre.

BMW have the know how to seal the spokes or use rims such that the spokes sit outside the bead.  I don’t see why anybody would want to go back to using tubes.

The MT10 and the SP are an awesome bike in its class... when you look at the competition, most of them are using very old engines / tech ( GSXS1000 is a 2005 GSXR1000 engine thats been detuned). The Sp is a tricky one, when you add up the individual cost of the Ohlins electronic forks, Ohlins shock, colour display etc it stacks up.. but.. you would only need the Ohlins if you were using it on track a lot and if you were using a bike on track a lot it would not be an MT10 the SP is kind of the answer to a question nobody asked..
I work at a mutli brand dealership in Sussex (including Yamaha) we do not charge for a demo ride or swipe a credit card, there is a maximum excess of £750 if you bin it and all it will cost you is your petrol!

that said, it is brilliant on track, I had to go to Silverstone for "work" the other week and have several half hour sessions on track on the R1M, R1, MT10SP and even a Tracer 900 and the MT10SP was much fun!

So if I bin it I have to pay your £750 excess --- if so  why ? or if I damage it in anyway I have to pay for the repairs ? up to £750. And why do I have to put in my own petrol.

Cos you will have signed a bit of paper saying you will.
I don’t see what is unreasonable about that.  And if you don’t like the excess, and I didn’t like Glasgow Triumph’s excess, you can decline.  It’s up to you.
Quote
And why do I have to put in my own petrol.
MCS Kilmarnock gave me the MT10 with half a tank of fuel.  I got back an hour later running on vapours.  I did ask if they wanted me to pay for the fuel I had used.

Victor Devine Honda had run out of fuel.  A member of staff was for giving me cash to put fuel in it, but I was happy to stick a tenner in.

Only Douglas Park BMW expected me to put fuel in, though they apologised for the lack of fuel that the bike went out with (about 5 miles from the dealership it was on reserve) I stuck 15 quid in.  I had the bike for 2 hours and to my surprise it still had plenty when I got back.  The boxer sips the stuff.

But naw, if dealers are giving you a bike for an hour or two, I don’t expect them to provide me with fuel.

Correct, just like if you crash your own bike and there is an isurance claim you have to pay the first £xxx excess. If it is £100 damage you pay £100, if its £5000 you pay the £750. No different at all.
You have to put petrol in because running demo bikes costs dealers lots of money as it is. We get very little funding from manufacturers and it is common coutesy to bring it back with what it goes out with or everyone will bring them back on fumes so the next person out has to head for the nearest petrol station.Of course, if you think those "terms" are unreasonable you are more than welcome not to take our bike out  :)

Still dont get why that is all so with a bike but not when I tak out a car for a test drive - also the car is worth a lot more than the bike. I took a car out a couple of weeks ago and the salesman drove it to the garage and put some petrol in and then I drove it from there.
Its having to pay the cost to fix - up to £750 that puts me off test riding a bike. Looks like the dealer making a nice earner out of repairs as the repairs also carry a labour cost which go's in their pocket whilstr also sourcing the parts cheaply I assume.

Don’t forget that it is your responsibility to ensure any vehicle that you take out on the public highway is insured.    You might want to ask more questions when you next take a car for a test drive.

Again, hire cars and curtesy cars and bikes.  It’s your responsibility – check the terms.  1,500 quid excess is not unusual on a curtesy car for example.

They put trade plates on. Curtsey/hire cars are a completely different matter, we are not talking about those.

Rather than have the possibility of up to £750 I would rather pay a sort of damage waiver £30 lets say, non refundable. BUT if I subsequently buy the/a bike then the £30 comes off the price.

Motorbike demonstrators do not have trade plates, but even if a vehicle is out on trade plates it is insured. Its simple, if there is a claim, there is an excess... regardless of who has the insurance. Your fault your excess. Also remember when you go out in a car you have the sales person sat next to you, not the same when you take a bike for a couple of hours... but as said, if you don't like the terms, dont take a demo bike out.. no worries :)

Of the three bikes I took out recently, only the Honda was on a trade plate.

And it is all the same.  Whether it your vehicle, a demo or a curtesy, they have to be insured and there will be an excess.

I always ask about insurance and always read what I am signing.  The last time I had an accident on a bike, 20 odd years ago, it was on a curtesy bike.  I signed for a 500 quid excess.  But what I didn’t realise was that I was signing for the dealer’s comprehensive part of the insurance – ie their bike.  They did not provide me with third party cover.  They assumed as I had comprehensive cover my insurance would cover the third-party aspect, all they provided was insurance to cover the bike.  This wasn’t discussed – and as it turned out my policy did not give me cover to ride other bikes.

Now the police attended the incident and wanted to check details – and that’s where things got interesting.

And that’s why I am saying to you that it is your responsibility to make sure any vechicle that you are driving/riding has – 1. The legally required level of insurance and that 2. You are happy with the insurance arrangements in general.

So keep yourself right and as Stuart says it’s also your choice.

I think dealers put bikes on to sell bikes.  I don't think they want punters trashing them - it can be a whole lotta hassle.  I would assume their priority, should you damage their bike, is to get it fixed and back on the road.  I’d guess if it’s under the excess, they’ll do that as quickly and cheaply as possible.

I have had 3 BMW bikes over the years and no problems with any of them--really reliable machines.

I've had only one BMW, and have never spent so much money in keeping one bike on the road, in all my biking lifetime.  :'( A gearbox failure at 50 odd thousand miles, was the final straw.

Its not that excting... apart from the very occasional free track day and getting to mess about on all the demo bikes including a 214bhp Ducati V4.. whats to like ;)

Yes, it was a dealer day at Silverstone a few weeks ago. Had half hour sessions on track on the R1M, R1, MT10SP, R1M again and the Tracer 900.What better than thrashing bikes round a track for free, when they are not your bikes and with no excess if you run out of talent!
R1M is a machine
