General / Making up a cleaning kit
« on: 03 June 2021, 06:39:34 pm »
So having a faired bike again has reminded me how much of a pain in the ass they are to clean, and the fact its black in places is even worse. So I'm looking at putting together a really good cleaning kit. The best washes, polishes, waxes as well as brushes chamois etc etc
So I thought I'd ask you guys what you use, given that (without sounding rude) a lot of you guys are on the more mature side of things I trust that most of you have been using some of the same products for years so you would have good recommendations 😁
I mean I could just go out and spend my life savings on autoglym but I'd hazard a guess and say a £5 bottle of turtle wax is probably just as good as a £27 bottle of that 🤷‍♂️

So anyway partly because I could really use the advice and partly because it would be nice to have an actual topic that relates to biking on here 😝 would anyone be so kind as to offer up suggestions on good cleaning products
Thanks 👍🏻

What I don't understand is how foreign workers (from the EU at least) are classed as cheap labour as I'm pretty sure the minimum wage laws apply to everyone that works in this country? So shouldn't matter if they hire John, Pietro, Sally or Zofia..... they should all be on the same hourly rate??

Minimum wage rules do apply elsewhere in the EU but places like Greece, thats only €2-3 / hour as the cost of living is much lower. Thats why we like to go on holiday there and why they like to come and work here.

Same with Bulgaria/Poland/etc/etc

Yes but what I saying is why does Mr wetherspoon favour so called "cheap labour" when in fact they cost the same as hiring the guy down the road?

Been trying repeatedly to book my jab. Can have the first one next week but because none of my local centres can offer me my second then I can't book my first?? What kind of stupid system is this? So my choices now are keep waiting until the appointments change or have my first one then travel 40miles away for the second one in August 🙄

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Insurance and Mods
« on: 26 May 2021, 04:56:38 pm »
Depends on the mod and the company. For instance Bennetts don't require you to declare things like Levers, grips ,mirrors indicators etc where as Bikesure do.
Mods that change the power output (ivans/power commanders) always cause the companies arses to twitch so expect an increase for those. Things like end cans, belly pans and panniers aren't usually too bad, comes down to cost more than anything with those.
How much you choose to tell them is down to you though. Personally I wouldn't mention an Ivans kit as the kind of thing you wouldn't even know about yourself unless you'd done it, so in the event of an accident you'd had reasonable excuse to plead ignorance. However fitting a something like a power commander would be a little harder to defend 😅
All in all its lose lose no matter what you do, the insurance company will only ever do what's I their best interests not yours I'm afraid 🤷‍♂️

insurance time for the mighty thou, received the renewal notice last week for £140.96, Phoned Hastings up last night as i do every year and got it down too £87.83...there are some advantages to being an old foccer  ;)

Just had my first quote through for my 2016 Z1000SX from my current insurers Bennetts....... £713.28!!
Baring in mind my FZ1n was insured with them for the same cover for only £186 a year and that was modified, faster and had a much smaller lock and chain in it!🙄

But just spent 10 minutes on the phone to them and in their typical fashion they have now "magically" managed to get it down to £385!
Honestly  I'm half convinced they just have a random number generator set up in the screen when they set your renewals.
It's still more expensive then I've seen on the comparison sites but I need to make sure I'm getting the same level of cover from the cheaper companies before I switch.

What's more annoying is all the companies now messaging me quotes for my FZ1n and that's only coming up at £120ish 😒

Good to see the BBC getting a proper slamming over the Princess Diana interview :)

Just a shame that as usual with the BBC its all coming 25 years too late... (a bit like the last major scandal they had) 🙄 other than Bashir I doubt there's anyone else that will get in any bother for it. Most of them will have either moved on or retired by now 😒

« on: 20 May 2021, 06:26:13 pm »
I can't understand why they haven't started to make hybrid bikes yet. Something like a 300/400cc engine with an electric motor that puts out similar power to a 1000cc bike. I think it would help coax people over to electric vehicles as it is trying to do with cars 🤔

I've been looking at UK hotel prices. Gone through the roof now everyone is doing a staycation

A "Staycation" is where you STAY at home and use that as a base for your VACATION!

It doesn't (despite what many news readers appear to think) mean that you're going on holiday in the UK instead of going abroad, unless my regular holidays surfing and biking in North Devon have suddenly become "Staycations"!

Holidays in the UK are still "proper" holidays!

Actually your both right (you and the papers), here's the official definition of staycation....

"a holiday spent in one's home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions"

If anything I've found it great to discover new parts of the country that I would have never thought to see if I'd had the option to travel abroad

What's doing my head in are the stupid nonsensical rules such as the fact you can go and stay in on a holiday park in a caravan but can't stay in a hotel room because apparently (in England anyway) a hotel room isn't self-catering accommodation?? Yet in Wales and Scotland it is!?

So obtuse are the rules that when i go away next week with my wife for her birthday we had originally planned a night in Liverpool as she likes the shopping there but due to the way the rules are we are no spending the day in Liverpool then driving across the border to a hotel in Wrexham (45mins away) then driving back into Liverpool the next day and I'm not breaking any rules!?

When I brought up the issue with the hotel in Liverpool they stated that they can't be classed as self catering due to the hallways and entrance foyer!! So it's fine for me to go to the gym and be surrounded by 10s of sweaty, heavy breathing strangers for 60mins at a time with no masks but it's too dangerous to briefly walk past someone in a hotel corridor while wearing masks 🙄🙄

So following the so called "science" must mean that Wales and Scotland have scientists with common sense where as here in the England we are stuck with the idiots 🙈

You might get a better response if you post this in the for sale/wanted section. I'm sure one of the mods will come along and move it for you shortly 👍🏻

Tbh this is why I just use ebay. Costs a bit as they take the piss with vehicle selling charges but get much more chance of actually selling to someone that's going to show up. Plus you can require an immediate deposit at the end of the bid which helps weed out the wasters

General / Re: Security chain advice
« on: 29 April 2021, 11:41:40 pm »
One thing. I would never publicise what security I have on a public forum so that scrote bags know what tools to bring. ;)
A word on the insurance discount if you get any is that if you did not use the chain one time and the bike was nicked they would probably not pay out. Like they don't when you say you have a garage and you are not covered for stolen off your drive or after a certain hour.

Yeah in know they would try to worm out of it anyway possible. I already have a garaged clause on my insurance that says it has to be locked up with my declared security between the hours of 10pm and 7am otherwise its not covered 🙄 also I don't believe I'm covered if it is stolen from within a mile of my house 🤷‍♂️

But as I say its not the sole security device (I edited the previous post) so I'm really I'm just wondering if people think a giant chain is worth bothering with and if any of you have that big to advise me if it's more hassle than its worth trying to use it? 🤔

General / Security chain advice
« on: 29 April 2021, 11:09:12 pm »
Hey I'm looking for a new chain as my Squire is started to get a bit long in the tooth. The cover has all but disintegrated and it's started to scratch  my bike wheels when using it.
Anyway I've been looking around at what seems to be the best and a few things keep popping up but I've got my eye on the Oxford beast 22mm with the Oxford beast lock. It's on offer st the minute for £202 for both which is great, I'm just wondering if a 20kg 22mm link chain is going to be a bit overkill? My current squire is only a 14mm chain and has always done the job so I'm wondering if it would be better to just stick to one of a similar size? Also means I wouldn't have to get a new ground anchor
But then the Oxford one is sold secure diamond rated so I'm thinking it might bring the insurance down a smidge 🤷‍♂️

Anyway does anyone have any input/advice that may help me choose which is the best option?

(Edit: fair point sharpie 👍🏻)

Regarding the seat having test ridden both bikes the stock seat on both is about the same.

https://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?topic=25328.0

The first ever SX I test road had the Kawasaki confert seat (WTF they didnt just ship the bike with that from factory is beyond me). Also the stock tyres that ship with the SX are horrendous. Agree on the power modes to a point, on the highest setting you can tell the difference when you give it a handfull. The only issue I had with this bike is the lack of center stand.

What year did you buy? as I believe the first gear issue was fixed in 2017 onwards.

I went with a 66plate in the end as it was the newest one within my budget. The 4th gear issue is a potential problem but its not as common as some would you believe. On the Sx forum there are only a handful of owners that have ever experienced it so I'm not too concerned. Although given my past luck with the Yamaha stator I should probably prepare for bad luck in the future 😅

I will be having the seat rebuilt & customised at some point later in the year, just need to decided between gel or memory foam 🤔

I've got PR4s on the bike atm which seem to be the go to tyre for most SX owners. I may try the PR5s when it comes time to replace them. As for a centre stand, it's nothing I would ever need/want on a bike anyway so not a problem for me, I have an Abba stand for when I need to do anything with the bike level.

I 've read some reviews on the Z1000sx and they all reckon you can't buy a better sports tourer, the only things nearly everyone moaned about were a hard seat and the exhaust! if that's your only problems you ain't got any !! :lol  great bikes. :thumbup

Yes I'm very happy with it. I can honestly say there isn't another bike I would have wanted even given the choice of anything.

The seat is bad, much worse than the FZ1 anyway, I can only manage around an hour before I start getting a numb 😅
I don't know what peoples problem would be with the exhaust? Other than maybe the fact its quiet? But I would imagine that's the same with all standard exhausts these days given the size of the catalytic converters on them 🤷‍♂️

If I had to be finicky and pick some flaws I'd say its a little vibey at high rpms, it doesn't like to turn into corners without a lot of muscle (possibly a suspension set up issue), headlights are crap until you put LED bulbs in and other than that the only other issue I've had is working on it given all the bits you need to remove to actually get at anything haha

Comparative improvements over my FZ1 I would say fuel economy (major difference, probably double the tank range), far better tacho/speedo with lots more information such as remaining miles in the tank, average mpg, live mpg etc. It's got a much smoother power delivery and a much nicer clutch.

Things that are better but I can't compare to the Yamaha;
The pannier system is amazing! So easy to click them on and off plus with the fancy kawasaki system theres little to no signs they were even on there (so no ugly racks)
3 way adjustable screen is a great, lowest setting for the "sporty" look and for racing around but the highest setting for motorways or long trips, keeps the wind right off.
The 3 level traction control has proved to be quite useful on wet rides, turn it up full and just act like it's not raining, the ecu takes care of the power so no slips or slides. The power modes are bit pointless, I think low mode cuts the power to around 100bhp but as its all up the top end its not really noticeable in a situation where you want less power. I've only used it when I took my daughter on the back for the first time so not exactly red lining it anyway.
I'm sure ABS is handy too although I've not managed to engage it just yet.

So yeah all in all I couldn't be happier. I do miss the looks of my FZ1 as it was one probably the prettiest bikes I've ever seen IMO but the green machine has grown on me.

Preferably a traditional one but I'll accept a modern white thing if that's all that's going 👍🏻
Being old-school, naturally I went for the vintage option :D ...
