Problem solved! Thanks His Dudeness for pointing to the carbs. I balanced the carbs this afternoon and the now she purrs again. It was like magic - I've got a big grin on my smug face.

I can now hear a tiny bit of clutch rattle but I've heard a lot worse so I'm not worried about that for the moment.

Thanks for the heads up about the exhaust studs.

I've tried varying exhaust flow and blocking 'leak' with rags - no change.

But, I do like your idea about carb balancing. I've just been reading about how imbalanced carbs can cause engine vibration. This seems like a good description of my symptoms. I've also started having difficulty getting the choke right - I'm looking into it.

OK...

Took the filler cap off while running (slowly and carefully) - there was no appreciable change in volume or tone. No splatter either.
Pulled the clutch in and out a lot - no appreciable change in noise.
Did the same revving up - still no change in noise.

Perhaps I'm just being paranoid. There are no other symptoms and the ride is as good as ever. Could be the the minor exhaust leak near the can - I'll get this looked at, the pipes are all looking a bit rusty.

Thanks people.

Cool, I'll have to check tomorrow morning with the filler cap off and clutch in and out - I haven't noticed any change in the sound waiting at the lights, clutch in though.

Its only done just over 14K.

Please take a look at the video (or listen). It started sounding a bit strange - sort of tinny, higher pitched (hard to describe). I haven't noticed any other symptoms. I've recently done a service including new plugs - the noise was there before and after.

I did notice a tiny bit of exhaust leaking from a rusty seam between the pipe and muffler - could this sound be linked to that? I expected it to be a bit more throaty if it was (this is more nasal???)

I see a few months has passed since the OP. I'm going naked and as I'll need new indicators and mirrors I'm wondering whether to go for the combo. Have you got these working? Are you using them alone or with other front indicators?

Maybe I can win the newbie contest. Started riding on my 32nd birthday and now 34! I've had a Suzuki Van Van (125) and an Aprilia Tuono (1000). I wrote off the Tuono and nearly myself in the process.

I passed my test on an FZS600 and was happy to find the one I ride now earlier this year. I ride every day to work down through the Dart valley to Totnes which is bliss.

These twin lights are also an idea although not sure about lighting quality

Does anybody else use these?

They look tidy. Trouble is, I'd like to maintain the quality of lighting I already have with the projectors but lose the fairing... It might take a bit of trial and error. Perhaps I'm being too picky?

I might try something I've seen on a USA custom bikes forum with pipes, fibreglass and perspex to make a housing for the projectors. Making sure they're road legal is the main thing.

yeah, maybe 14 inches of headlight is too much. I thought I'd seen some but maybe they were smaller. Stacked might work though... I'll shop around a bit more

right, my projectors aren't sealed units so I'll definitely need a housing. I'm now thinking twin 7 inch to look like big bug eyes. I might need to modify the backs to fit them in but I've seen some cheap plastic ones in a local shop... I feel a nice little project coming on!

I suppose there are a lot of options out there. I've just seen some that use the HID projectors bolted straight on without a housing. This makes sense as long as they're weatherproof!?

I might consider this as it's a cheap option using what I've got and looks pretty sweet.  :lol

I'm considering going naked. Any hints on best (but not too pricey) headlights?

Twin or single?

Halogen / LED / HID?

I've already got projectors from previous owner - is it worth hanging on to these and is there a headlight set that will take them?

Thanks

So if your interested, I painted my fairing and replaced the handle bars for Renthal medium risers. Now very comfy and does't look an eyesore bombing down the A38! Not the best paint job or colour match but I'm happy for a first attempt at a metallic candy.

Bars adjusted back a bit and bar ends fitted after, but you get the general idea

Thanks all, I'll check under the seat. I'm pretty sure this is a 2001 production, 2002 registered so probably the lighter shade. Anyway... I'll post some picks later this summer when I get round to painting her up. I'm getting new wider / higher bars too - probably renthal mediums... IN BLUE!

I like blue.

Thanks for the welcome. Only pics I have at the moment - the kids are almost as happy as me!

I've got to spray the front fairing blue among a few other tweaks, anyone know the colour for this bike?

Hi all at FOC-U,

I'm a new owner, had an FZS600 (2002) for a nearly a week already. Love the bike.

I'm down in Devon and lovin the weather on the bike right now.

Need to do a couple of things to the bike to get her up to scratch but very happy so far.

Cheers
