FZS600 Fazer / Thundercat forks swap just a little help
« on: 09 June 2015, 07:03:20 pm »
Got myself a pair of thundercat forks off fleabay, they fit in the yokes nicely, front wheel fits well and the Speedo drive just slotted in and located on the forks just right, even the fazer mudguard can quite easily be made to fit with a couple of fabricated brackets. The only issue I've got is the brake calipers, the holes line up nicely but there's an overlap of fork to caliper mountings. Has anyone fitted tcat forks with fazer wheel? How did you achieve front brakes?

How Many miles has it done? Just thinking, high mileage, stretched can chain, maybe, would set things slightly off.

28
The more I look in to this the more it looks like a whole lot of work. Maybe emulators are the way to go.

29
I've found a cheep set of tcat forks so I might just have ago, stanchions are in poor condition but bottoms are ok and hopefully the internals aswell. If I do go for it I'll let you all know how I get on.

30
Do any of you knowledgeable focers know if the internals of the thundercat forks would fit in fazer forks? If I could get hold of a pair could I strip them and swap so I can keep fork sliders, wheel and Speedo drive but giving me adjustability.

« on: 26 March 2015, 10:29:21 pm »
I have a Speedo that occasionally goes weird, apparently I was doing 125mph around a roundabout I usually take at least than 30 a couple of weeks ago

Check the route of the speedo sensor wire in particular by the brake disc.  Weird speedo readings are often caused by the edge of the disc wearing through the insulation and contacting the copper wire and sending confusing pulses to the speedo
There is a nick in the the insulation by the disk, I just need to get around to getting it sorted but until then.......

Ok that got some very mathematical responses, when I say 61/2k rpm, I use this as a rough guide. I have a Speedo that occasionally goes weird, apparently I was doing 125mph around a roundabout I usually take at least than 30 a couple of weeks ago so when it was behaving itself I checked and displayed 70mph is just under 6500rpm = won't get nicked.

Have you checked plug caps, mine died at 40k miles, was a different bike when they were replaced.

I could do with a set, if there's enough interest on here, I'm in

Mine sits around 61/2k at 70 with standard gearing.

Got the car started today, starter motor from a breakers, New cambelts, water pump, idler pulley (which was a red herring but I'm glad I found it) all running lovely now. I will definitely ask here first next time I need help, cheers guys.

37
After sleeping on it I woke up realising the only other part that interacts with the crank via the fly wheel is the starter motor, popped it off and seized solid while fully engaged with the fly wheel = locked engine. All moving lovely now, never seen a starter do that before but happy it's moving again. Thanks all for your replies, I posted this on a vw forum and got no replies, posted it on here and find helpful focers willing to try and help, I think that says a lot about bikers so thanks again and happy New year to you all.

38
Thanks for replies folks, plugs are out, looked down holes with torch all look good and dry so no hydro lock, we tried bump starting at the beginning, clutch spun ok when pushing it in gear, tried cranking by hand both ways and it won't budge a jot, I'm seriously stumped by this one, maybe it is a bearing that just failed on start up. Sump off next me thinks. Please keep the suggestions coming.

39
Yep plugs out, cranking by hand and not a dicky bird, it's like I've drilled through a cylinder and put a bolt through.

Help, I don't know if anyone here can help with this, I know it's a car but but it's an engine, 04 polo 1.4 running fine one day and seized up next the next morning. I parked up with no issues next day it turns over a couple of times then stops, then click click, ok, charge battery and click click. Cam belt covers off and I found a broken guide pulley so wondering if it's jumped a couple of teeth and jammed on a valve, cam carrier off, all valves appear to all be up so crank should turn....no. I've been wielding spammers for a fair few years now and have never had an engine do this, it's acting like I've been thrashing it with no oil in and seized solid but it had been left out over night and was stone cold, oil at correct level. I'm stumped so I was hoping someone here might be able to shed some light on this.

« on: 07 November 2014, 05:49:09 pm »
I've just replaced mine, it came with a soft link, I really wouldn't use  a split link, i had the swing arm off so I took it to local bike shop who riveted it for free, did a better job than I could. I looped it over swing arm before refitting. As for back plate reuse I wouldn't, use a new soft link.

Haha, the only bit I didn't take a picture of don't panic though, when you remove it, removed the 3 bolts securing it to the frame, shock and dog bones and the whole thing comes away intact. Check spacers for free pay, slide them out and check bearing needle bearings, ideally you will see greased rollers securely held in a cage. If any of them need replacing, they can be tapped out but must be pulled back in, tapping them in will damage them. If your unsure of what your looking at when you do put a lovely R6 shock on your bike and you've got the linkage in your hand pop some pics on here and I'm sure help will follow

Back form test ride and wow, grin factor is back, she goes round corners again without trying to kill me and much smoother feel, so pleased with that. I haven't done anything to the shock, the settings are as they were when kebab19 sent it to me and it's 100% better already. I would be grateful for any suggestions as to set up from any foccers who have got one of these lovely shocks.

gear linkage photo as requested, not quite sure what it is you were not sure of, if you can be more specific as to what you wanted to see I might have a pic of it.

Sun is shining so good day to rebuild the old girl. As suggested by midden, shock in first then feed shock though swing arm as I offer it up to its mountings, not forgetting to thread the chain on to swing arm beforehand, so much easier than trying to pass the fat end of the R6 shock through a small hole, pivot bolt in and torqued up. On with the linkage parts and dog bones, which look really nice, all torqued up to Haynes quoted ratings (hope they got these ones right). Front sprocket on next on with the new nut and tab washer, thread chain on to sprocket, rear sprocket fixed to carrier with stainless nuts ( I didn't use any old nuts to be on the safe side I used pro bolt stainless Sprocket nuts), back wheel in and it's mostly back together.

Front sprocket cover back on, adjust chain tention and wheel alignment chain guard and done. I checked all nuts and bolts to make sure I didn't miss any and all is how it should be and tight. Next take it for a spin.

More shiny stuff arrived, New chain and sprockets and I popped into wemoto and picked up a new front sprocket nut and tab washer.

That's everything sorted for the rebuild and all the bearings are now greased up ready to go back on. All I need is some good weather at the weekend and the forecast is looking good, fingers crossed for Saturday.

I'm now in possession of an R6 shock, supplied and modified by kebab19, many thanks to him for that and what a lovely looking thing it is too. As my chain and sprockets are at the end of their life I thought I would take this chance to strip out, clean and overhaul the rear end.
IMAG0485
IMAG0485
I removed front sprocket engine cover, chain fling, so much chain fling every where so I set to with a shovel, an hour or so later and I've found crank cases, another hour and it's as clean as I can get it.

Now check front sprocket nut and it's the old type but luckily it is tight and in good Nick but will still be replaced for thicker one.

Sprocket teeth have looked better.
IMAG0463

Splines looking good. Back wheel out next then undo linkage and remove and amazingly it looks well greased and bearings are in good nick so just regrease needed there. Next swing arm bolt, worryingly not very tight, removed rear brake and torque arm and caliper then dropped the swing arm out rear shock next and yuck.

Set to with the degreaser and scrubbing brush.
