With engine running or not?
My foxeye without engine running does that. But it's fine with engine on.
Led bulbs or normal halogen? i presumed its a battery thing and if it's not being charged it doesn't like the extra load.
If yours does it with engine on, what sort of voltage you got at the battery?

ebay is terrific for small numbers of various fasteners.
search 'allen bolts,' and measure the length of one you've taken out. Similarly for the fairing fasteners - most stuff will be M4 or M6 thread.

While it's gutting - just think of it as an opportunity to refresh some stuff!

3
No worries, hope it's hassle free.
Don't forget to order a gasket or have some gloop ready, mine split and needed replacing... They're 4 or 5 quid on eBay.

4
Undo the (2 sizes) of allen bolts around the stator cover.
Use a big Allen key, remove the centre cap.

Before doing anything else, put something on the centre of the rotor you can see through the cap. When you pull the cover off, the magnet will want to drag everything else out with it, meaning stuff may fall straight into the case.

Keep pushing hard on the shaft, (or better still, get an assistant) while pulling the casing off. A screwdriver, or socket extension bar or anything that will fit through the hole will keep the rotor in place when the stator comes off with the cover.

At this point, I'd put a piece of plastic or cardboard over the hole to the crank. There's 2 spacers and a washer at the back of the rotor that your going to pull out to replace it. As well as some rubber cush drives. On the off chance it separates, it won't fall past the cardboard.

Once it's all out, pull it apart, swap rotor out and put it all back.

I had to put it in gear and wiggle the rear wheel to get the cogs aligned and it all to slot home.

Remove cardboard, button it up.

You don't have to drain the oil, but some will escape so put a rag down. You might want to dab some oil on the parts as you reassemble into the bearing.

Good luck!

So.
I was right. 2 rubber bits one washer and one spacer sitting on the top of the oil pan.

Alternator all back together while oil pan off, just in case anything else fell in

Exhaust doesn't come out in one, had to split it at the clamp.

Sheared 3 exhaust studs off coz they're rotten, so just waiting for some studs and brass nuts to arrive.

Hasn't been touched for nearly a month, and started on the button first time (loudly, with no exhaust!). Impressed...

Can't wait to get  her back on the road to be honest, she might even get a wash!

6
So after a month of getting used to my new 06, FZ1-S, I decided to get clever and check the rotor magnets weren't looking like they were going to fail.

As I pulled the cover off, a washer and 2 of the rubber cush mounts feel straight down the hole into the bottom of the case.  Doesn't look like any hope of fishing them out..

I'm guessing I need to order a new alternator gasket, new oil pan gasket and new exhaust gaskets and get busy?

In my head, I need to disconnect exup, remove exhaust at header and take it as one piece, drop oil, drop oil pan. Fish the bits out then stick it all back together? Is there anything I've missed our need to be wary of?

Deffo going to reassemble the stator/rotor before replacing the oil pan!

Anyone else done this? The magnets looked fine, which is even more annoying!! :'(

Navigation features is also in progress although this is still a bit of a way off. Have been working on a Smartphone app which will talk to the TFT Dash via Bluetooth and communicate direction updates.

Can't wait..  mapping and speed camera alerts and I'll be ordering!!

Thanks all for the replies.

Typically, I've bought it.

First impressions...
The gear lever is too high, and doesn't always select a gear when changing up. My fault, it's not easy to get the full travel in the lever at the moment. An easy fix when I get round to it.
The headlights are aimed waaaay high. To the point where oncoming traffic is flashing me. I've swapped out the led bulbs from the 600, and need to screw the aim down a bit.
The rear brake is also a little high. And the clutch doesn't disengage until way off the bars, so I sometimes give it too much revs before pulling away.

I've had the cover off the exup. All seems clean and tidy in there. Not noticed anything particularly when rolling back on the throttle, but I'm not confident enough to whack the throttle open like I did on the 600!

The seats a bit hard after an hour.

By Christ does it like to go tho!!

So much more relaxing than the 600 for pootling about but I'm used to dropping down to 4th to do an overtake and this thing just flies off...!

No heated grips yet, and don't know if I can bring myself to put muffs on it for the winter. But it doesn't even feel that much heavier or bulkier than the 600.

So yeah, love it. Little bit intimidated, and annoyed that I will never push the limits of what it can do because a) rider skill and b) licence retention.

What an awesome machine.
Love it love it love it.

Cheers for that. Lots of reviews mention the fueling issue too.
I've got an 03 fzs600 at the moment that isn't ULEZ free.

I've kinda been looking for a newer bike but not sure what to get, when a friend of a friend is getting rid of a 06 FZ1

I've always fancied a litre bike... Scratching an itch before I get too old, but turned this down assuming it wasn't ULEZ free. Then found out he's got it tested and exempted and shows as free on ULEZ checker

So was tempted enough and a good enough price that I'm picking it up on Friday!

Keeping the 600 for a bit as it needs some TLC before letting someone else have a go, so it'll give me a chance to try the Thou for a bit still having the 600 in reserve!

Really really hope I'm not disappointed though,

So. Having been a very happy rider of a 03 plate foxeye 600 for 4 years (adding nearly 60k miles) I have been offered a good price on a 2006 FZ1-S.

Should I take the plunge? What will I love about the Thou? What will I miss from the 600?

Keeping both not an option. I need to trade in, due mainly to the ULEZ, and the 06 Thou has been tested and exempted from ULEZ by current owner

What do?

chain 'juddering' sounds like it's not in line and rubbing on the sprocket edge?

i got virtually no movement in sprocket carrier on mine. if bearings and cush-drive are good, it shouldn't move at all.

have you got the spacer in? Have a look here for parts list and order for putting it together... but i'd try a bit of string to check alignment first

Those with Delkevic pipes do they actually have the balance pipe between 1-2 and 3-4 cylinder, like they show in the picture on the bay of e?

yes

I made a thread somewhere about my Delkevic pipes...

Here it is!

They still look great a year later TBH... Just cleaned a years worth of crap off them with some Harpic bog cleaner

Dont be in any rush and keep soaking those nuts, I used a syringe to get right in there

^^This... I did kitchen roll soaked in plusgas wrapped around the studs for a week... Came off no drama...

Seriously it is an easy job to change the air filter,... While you there check the coolant level in the radiator, cap on the right hand side front of bike under the fuel tank.
Jobs-a-Gooden.  :thumbup

There's a fuel filter under there too... just follow the fuel pipe down to it's bracket. Last time I was delving around, I changed that. Old one had done 20k odd miles. No idea if it needed a new one!

Put delkevic on mine Bit of a fiddle fitting them in one piece pre-assembled so took it apart and did it in sections. Piece of cake. Come with link pipes between the downpipes so identical to the OEM ones.

Cheers Bob, I'll give it a miss, I cant stand sub-standard TV (footie). Just have to keep paying Sky  :eek

Apps like Mobdro can be good if you know which channel you want. Google 'mobdro apk download', it's not in the play store  ;)

good effort... but yellow?!?!

post pics when it's done! can't believe there's "LED upgrade kits" for £20 on ebay, when this is all you need.

it's impossible to get wrong, apart from bulbs the wrong way round. Deffo test before re-assembly... I changed the fuel low light too... didn't do the indicator warning, can't remember why. Wish i'd done the high beam blue one as well, coz that's near invisible in daylight (when I've flicked the switch by accident thinking I've turned the choke off! :o)

if you're taking it the clocks apart to change a bulb - may as well swap them for capless LEDs.
You can change colour if you want, but i didn't bother, just plain white and looks brighter and better than stock.

Just fitted delkevics to mine...

Too fiddly to get it all fitted in one piece - was a piece of cake when fitted in sections. Much cheaper than Motad... Pics here

The delkevics were £190 delivered... The motads look great, but £251 on their website not including vat or delivery? So at least £300 to buy??

Can't imagine there will be any problem getting to the oil filter... Hadn't crossed my mind tbh!

Edited - post related to fzs 600

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BBROWN1664 - Just to be clear, the write up is related to the FZS600, not the FZS1000 though some people do replace the standard pipes with non-exup versions.

So - FZS 600 - 2003 Foxeye. Coming up to 40k miles.

The collector underneath was rotten and the bike sounded like a tractor

Time to shell out on a new set of pipes. Much eBay and Googling to try to find the best value.

Plumped for these as they had the little link pipes between the tubes... and shiny shiny!

Fearing a disaster with getting the old one off and needing this bike to stay on the road - i plus-gassed the nuts daily for about a week, usually while the engine was hot. (if that makes a difference!?) Also purchased some M6 stainless threaded rod so i could make up a new one if i broke a stud and some M6 stainless dome nuts to put back on.

Arrived the next working day...

Unboxed and fitted together. It came in 3 parts, with copper gaskets for the manifold and a new end can gasket and 4 springs to hold it all together (and a tube of sealant) Top marks Delkevic, looks stunning...

Impossible to assemble the wrong way round!

Now to get to work. The 8 nuts all came off - easy as pie... that plus-gas must've done the job. Two brackets undone on the end can and it all came off without a drama.

Initially, i put the downpipes together and tried to fit, but it was a right ball-ache trying to get the 4 pipes in the manifold together, without dislodging the gasket and without smearing sealant everywhere.

Eventually admitted defeat - took it all off and apart and cleaned it up again.  :rolleyes

Copperslip on the studs and fitted both pairs of downpipes. Then crawled underneath - put the collector on and wrestled the springs on. Bracket done up. Gasket and old end can on and a quick wipedown... Job done.

Well pleased with how it looks - have also just got a tube of autosol to try and keep them nice. It's all been smothered in ACF50 for now to try and look after it. All 8 studs remained intact too... so would recommend a few days soaking in plusgas or similar before trying to undo them.

Yeah, i know, it does make the rest of the bike look scruffy, and i don't like the change in pipes between the new part and the end-can - but it'll do for now. No change in sound as still stock end can... but it sounds like it should and not like a lumpy V8 tractor, so  :woot

I've just got these delivered awaiting fitting the weekend...

Best value i could find that have still got the small link pipes between the tubes... My collector is rotten and full of holes. Just plusgassing the nuts for a few days first - and ACFing the bejesus out of the new ones!
good luck
