FZS600 Fazer / LED Spotlight confusion
« on: 20 December 2018, 10:46:09 am »
Hi Guys,

Bit of a mystery one, I recently fitted a pair of LED spotlights to my Fazer (make a big difference, so thanks to all the others who posted about them).

Buuuuut, they come on randomly when they're turned off; sometimes one (it changes which one) just lights up very dimly, sometimes it's an intermittent flashing (at various speeds). If i flick the switch on and off, it stops but then comes back a while later.

I don't understand how this is happening, I know that LEDs draw so little power that it's unlikely to be issue, especially as I ride the bike every day so it doesn't have a chance to discharge the whole battery.

I've wired direct to battery with an inline fuse, and a switch on the handlebar, nothing fancy but it does the job.

Any ideas as to what the issue could be? Has anyone else experienced this?

Cheers mate, that was my thinking. I've already replaced HT, cap, and plug, but I'll check the resistance of them before i try new coil.

I've bought myself one of the £25 "50" types from ebay, figured it's worth a shot and the modification needed to make it fit should only take 10 minutes.

Fingers crossed...

why not just get the right one?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Ignition-Coil-Yamaha-Xz550-XZ-550-550xz-Cm11-55/1837091390

Just because I'd rather buy new rather than second hand.

@ His Dudeness, You are right about the constant and the switched. I definitely have full 12v feed, and the coil will generate a solid spark at first then dwindle away to nothing. I've hooked up the multimeter and check the resistance of the coil. rough figures (don't have it in front of me) were:

Haynes
orange to red - 2.75 ohm +-10%
orange to ht - 7.5k ohm +-10%

Mine
orange to red - 3.2 ohm
orange to ht - 13.4k ohm

which seems like coil has an issue, even if it's not the only issue.

General / SR125 Coil advice?
« on: 07 November 2018, 09:28:37 am »
Hi guys, hoping for a little advice about my 2nd bike, a '91 Yamaha SR125 that I've picked up for cheap so I don't drop my Fazer when riding in the ice and snow.

It doesn't run currently and the problem seems to be the coil (way off spec according to the Haynes). All the replacements I can find online have "12v CM11 50" on the side, whereas mine has "12v CM11 55".

As far as I understand it (which isn't well), the 50/55 bit relates to the distance between the posts where it mounts to the frame? The only other difference I can see is that the "50" ones have bullet connectors, whereas mine has a 2 pin connector.

I know I can file the mounting bracket to fit, and change the connection on the loom to bullets, but I don't want to do that if it's not going to work!

Any advice? (example below of the "50" type)

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Fork types
« on: 22 August 2018, 09:54:29 am »
Not my specialist area (see post http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,24229), but I've been told (in that post) that the internals are different on the earlier forks so preload adjusters can't be added.

So, preloads = newer forks, I think....

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Naked Fazers!!

I'd been thinking of going the naked route too. The problem I had with google images was that after the first few a lot of them weren't even fazers; still useful for headlight and style ideas, but not so much when it comes to remounting clocks etc.

I don't know about second hand, but coincidentally I was just looking at parts on eBay and there's new ones on there for around £60. I don't know what the qualities like though.

Oh, and back to the original point.

I have adjusted both back to 5 lines showing, it made a HUGE difference to the ride, I am now going to experiment with adjusting up/down and see what feels best.

Just to get myself clear and make sure I'm right, less lines visible = more preload = harder ride, yeah?

Thanks for all your help guys, much appreciated!  :thumbup

Cheers, I had thought that the £300 - £400 price band was where things would move from cheap and nasty to being reliable enough for home use (and hopefully for a while!)

Oh, and what bench did you get? I was looking a while ago and the price range was huge.

Cheers Hugh, that's the plan.

My tool set is gradually growing, and I have already learnt the lesson of not buying too cheap!

Annoyingly, the cost of getting the forks and brakes done, spent the money I was saving for a second bike!  :'(

Oh, the irony! Ow, my wallet!  :lol

The irony is that I do do most jobs myself, I'm just not confident enough (and don't have the tools) to do forks and brakes.

Other thing is that the fazer's my only form of transport so I can't afford to have her off the road while I try and source a part. Ideally I want to get a cheap second bike I can hone my mechanic skills and also have as a backup if I need to do bigger jobs on the fazer.

But it's the only garage I can get to!  :'(
Last time I took her there, they forgot to reconnect the fuel pipe after having the tank off...

Oh gawd, I'm a total plonker.

Just tried to find a picture that would show the old setup and realised it had adjusters all along....

It seem that they were just wound right down (and hidden by wires) and I've only noticed them because they're now at different heights (see below).

« on: 04 June 2018, 02:46:15 pm »
Hi,

Probably a stupid question, but...

I've just had both fork stanchions replaced and the garaged fitted preload adjusters (it didn't have those before), I've noticed they (the adjusters) are at different heights, is this normal/ok?

Part of me thinks they should be identical, another bit of my brain think it's because they've been individually adjusted to allow for the fact that the old springs/internals have been re-used and might be worn differently?

Is this worth worrying about? Or does it not actually matter at all? I'm not a total stranger to mechanics, but forks aren't something I've ever played with before.

I put mine in 5th and rolled it back while sat on it (I also tried to do it by hand in first, and failed).

Not what I did, but still what happened: Got a call from the garage telling me that both fork stanchions are bent (I knew one was, which is what it's in for), which has now pushed the bill up to about £450  :'(

You can reset it by putting the bike in gear and turning the rear wheel backwards half a turn

[/size]Thanks mate, just tried this and it's solved one of the many noises my engine makes!

Tell me about it! My missus complained that I was spending £2.19 on toilet cleaner "just" for the bike.

She does agree that the pipes look very pretty now, although she's put it down to witchcraft rather than chemistry....  :lol

Hi Redmandan,

They're not the orginals, previous owner had them fitted 3-4 years ago (i think, have the receipt at home somewhere).

But yeah, harpic (specifically the black bottle "Power Plus MAX 10") does an amazing job with almost no effort at all.

A quick google will show you loads of vids on youtube but basically you just squeeze some out into a jam jar or saucer, get a standard plastic bristle paint brush (1" works well) and just paint it on then go back over and agitate it, give it a quick rub over with whatever you have handy (kitchen sponge is good, had blue roll to hand though) and then rinse it all off and stand back to admire!

I didn't take before and after pics as they weren't too bad, just discoloured. See below from when i did my old er-5 (RIP) last year.

Below is the comparison from my old er-5 (RIP)

Did the harpic trick to my downpipes after work on Friday (been a hectic bank holiday so haven't had a chance to post before)

Just need to drop them off and have a go with the autosol when I get the time.

Cheers Vinny, I did look into it but as the fazer's my only form of transport I can't have it off the road for more than a day.

Pricewise, looks about the same to get a new stanchion anyway, plus wouldn't a straightened one be weaker?
