Cheers for the info confirming what I have been told about the clutches often having a rattle, it is detectable but not offensive or loud, but defo there, so it's good to have it confirmed, appreciate it.
Have just ordered the correct nut and washer for the front sprocket, I thought that I had ordered the correct upgrade nut and washer a year or so ago but try as hard as I dared I could not get the old nut undone, I was afraid of stripping the thread on the shaft.

Well on reading lots about it on here I find that the nut that Yamaha sent me was the original 9mm nut not the upgraded 12mm job, so just ordered the 12mm nut and washer separate packages. the codes are as follows:

Nut 12mm part number 90179-18006
Washer part number      90215-21290

What is the knack of getting the nut off. I tried with a mate sat on the bike in first gear with rear brake on and front on as well, I gave up cos I was worried that something would snap, I had a 32mm (I think) socket and an 600mm bar and thought I was to bust a blood vessel, maybe I just being a whooos.

Knackering day.....on the  :faz , yay!  :)  Did loads of the gnarly little mountain roads in the Lakes, including Honister, Wrynose and Kirkstone passes. But quite a few other roads around here are similar in steepness, and they require constant concentration. It was actually pretty warm in the sun too, to the point where getting the colder winds at the tops of the passes was a relief!

Photos are a little better today with the sunshine.
Skiddaw's north face got a plastering of snow last night:

Wasdale again:

And Scafell actually not hiding in cloud:

And seen from a different viewpoint on Birker Fell:

It's a fabulous place; the sense of remote, open space is fantastic up here, one of my favourite in the region.

The Fazer goes in for a service tomorrow, and then I'll turn my attention to Scotland a bit I think...can't wait to start exploring somewhere new to me.

I had to take a second look at the third picture from the top it looked like someone had thrown a grey flip front helmet in the stream lol  :lol

Now where did I put that tube of Autosol lets get them rear alloy peg hangers polished

I'm puzzling over something to do with this at the moment. All my previous Fazers, I've polished the rear peg hangers with Autosol, and they seemed to dull down very quickly again. But the current bike, I've not touched with the stuff, and the peg hangers have remained shiny and clean with just hosing off and a quick wipe with a rag. So I'm wondering if the peg hangers are lacquered in their original form, and over-zealous polishing takes that lacquer off, and maybe I just now happen to have a bike where the previous owner hasn't touched the hangers with anything more than water or a mild detergent, leaving the finish intact.

Strange my alloy work dulls over a few weeks and needs polishing again, I don't mind doing it but would be better if I did not have to.
The old Autosol brings it up well. I remember years ago it was called Solvo Autosol, and the engine cases of my BSA 650cc Super Rocket A10 used shine like chrome, my nails were always black from the mixture of alloy and Autosol, used to get most of it off fumbling with the G\F's bra strap, much to her annoyance, the discoloured bra strap not my fumbling.  :lol :sex

Wow the inside of that lump looks pristine unfazed, scavenge pump filter looks spotless. Wonder what mine looks like inside at 34K.
Since I have owned the bike the oil has been changed along with the oil filter every 4000 miles, not sure about any previous history. The only thing I have noticed is a very slight rattle from the clutch basket and pulling in the clutch lever quietens it down (it has done this ever since I purchased the bike 3 years ago) I mentioned it to my mechanics and they said it was fairly normal and nothing to be concerned about at all, one of the mechanics rides a boxeye and he said that he replaced the whole clutch trying to stop his from rattling to no avail, his rattles worse than mine.

Found the same problem myself in February -had purchased the upgraded 12mm nut/washer in anticipation.
When I tried to undo existing nut I was on my own so put soft piece of wood between wheel spoke & swingarm. Fitted 600mm extension bar and a length of steel scaffold pipe over this--couldnt budge the f****r !  So like you reasoned that if brute force & ignorance wont move it then I will leave until such time as sprocket needs replacing & get local friendly garage to shock it loose with air tool !

Thanks for your thoughts on the sprocket issue, I am going to do likewise and leave it until such time as the drive train needs replacing. I tried to undo it wi.th bike in 1st gear mate sat on bike with front and rear brakes held on, still no joy, don't think that bad boy is going to come loose in a hurry.  :groan  Hope I'm right about that. I heard of one guy welding them sprocket onto the sharft after his threads had stripped. Bit drastic.

It gets out a lot in all weather :lol

Looking good, shame about the colour. 86k good going. Had many issues over the years unfazed. I have to say the bike looks sharp.  :photo

And you think, I can't ride it now or it'll get dirty again, and all that work will have been for nothing!   :eek    :wall

That's uncanny Hedge how the fuck did you see inside my head and read my thought and reasoning pattern. I agree wholeheartedly with your quote/statement above.

Fine spray hose the the bike down leave it while slurping a cup of tea, it softens the dirt, shampoo bike with Auto Glym shampoo and nice warm water, hose spray rinse, dry off completely with a number of micropor towels. Then polish the paintwork (that's SILVER paintwork the fastest colour) with the only polish I would allow near my beloved, yes of course Auto Glym and buff to a high gloss. Auto Glym plastic and bumper gell on side panels, mirror backs, fairing infill panels and around instrument panel. Looking good. Now where did I put that tube of Autosol lets get them rear alloy peg hangers polished and that stainless Steel work polished, ahhh! that's better, Right now for the wheels WD sprayed onto a rag and wheels cleaned (gets the chain lube off the rear wheel) dry off and on with the Auto Glym dark paintwork polish quick buff up and the jobs-a-gudun. Plastic polish on headlight lenses and screen, remove smears from mirrors and I do believe I have done. Start to finish 1.5 hours and loved every minute of it. Better get the bike put away as I have heard it might rain the day after tomorrow.

Lol what a sad twat. But it gives me soooooo much joy, I love seeing my beloved looking her best.
Well it's either that or masterbation and the bike takes about 90 times as long.

Hello Gentlemen,
Can anyone tell me how the f--k do you get the front sprocket off my 02/03 fzs600. I purchased the new modified sprocket nut and washer from Yamaha and have tried a couple of times to undo the sprocket retaining nut, I think the Incredible Hulk fitted it originally. I am assuming it is a standard right hand thread. 32mm socket and a 500mm extension lever, I am frightened to apply any more force than I have thus far for fear of snapping something.
I have left it for now as I have rightly or wrongly reasoned that as its that tight it's not likely to cause a problem. I have read about all sorts of nasty things happening when problems occurred with the nut.
I am 12st 10lbs in weight and a retired bricky so I am not adversed to applying a little force, but have shivered at the thought of snapping or stripping a thread on the shaft. Am I just being a tart and should I go for it?

Advice welcome and I am aware that the ultimate decision rests with me.

Someone said put a gas torch on it but not going down that route as it seems to me to risky, firstly removing any hardening and tempering from the shaft itself and or screwing any oil seals in the vicinity.

« on: 10 April 2016, 11:45:16 pm »
Hi Gazbo, Sorry can't help with your question but I thought I would just say hi anyway.
My ignition switch jams from time to time and it's really difficult to get the key to turn, 3 or 4 seconds of wiggling back and forth before it will turn. I have tried a mixture of WD40 and sewing machine oil and does not really help, so I guess I will be replacing my lock soon as well.
I also noted that you bought the FASTEST fazer a silver one, there are a number of old duffers on here that will try to tell you that the red fazer is the fastest, but all silver owners know that's bollocks.  :rollin :rollin :rollin

Pulling the handlebars a few miilimetres to the left as far as they will go when the steering lock is on can help with turning the key.

Cheers for the tip Darrsi.
I will give it a go when my electronic ankle tagging bracelet is removed.  :lol

Oh yeah! the blue one!!!! do they still make them? I thought that Yamaha had discontinued the blue bikes because of unreliability and sluggishness. :lol

welcome mate nice looking bike,  red is faster, ;)

What a load of bollocks! it's a known fact that the red ones are the slowest that's why there are a number of old farts on here with red ones. Red on the traffic lights means STOP and that is the state of nearly all red fazers, static or very very close to stationary. Now SILVER ones are the bees knees they are defo the fastest  :lol

FZS600 Fazer / Re: FZS600 problems getting bike on center stand.
« on: 09 April 2016, 10:39:07 pm »
It's all in the technique, face the bike side on balancing the bike with one hand on the handlebar the other on the grab rail located just above the pillon footrest. As you press down the centre stand the bike will become incredibly stable, provided the ground is even. Put your weight on the centre stand as if you're trying to push it through the floor, at the same time pull the grab rail upwards towards the sky. The bike will magically snap onto the centre stand with the minimal of force, it's what it's designed to do, you shouldn't need to wrestle with it. You'll get there fella, all it takes is a little a bit of practice  :thumbup

Spot on. I use my left foot - any preferences elsewhere?

Right foot.
I can't imagine there being too many more options.  :lol

Depends how long your tagger is. That's why I use my side stand.lol

Wing mirror glass, indicators, front fairing shield, infill panels on fairing.
Check engine mounting bolts are done up okay.

That would be well worth checking front screen, just grab it with one hand while riding. I had my GoPro mounted on the screen down low on outside in front of clocks and camera always had a loud buzzing noise and that is what it turned out to be screen vibes. I replaced them screen screws and rubber screw fixings and hey presto vibes gone. You can make a nice feature of the screen screws by getting colour coded ones to suit bike colour scheme, 9 quid on eBay.

Certainly worth checking only takes a second while riding along. A mate also had the same problem and he put double sided tape between the screen edge and the fairing edge that sorted his out, if you are carefull it's not even noticeable.

Rode from Lincoln to Two Wheels Centre at Mansfield.  Bought a Caberg Duke flip front helmet.  Quite pleased with it.  Rode home, probably looking like a tit.  Dark inner visor down, up, down again.  30 mph zone, front up.  50 zone , front down. Etc.

Very good bike shop, btw.

Do you find your flip is a bit noisier than the standard full face bucket?
I had been using a cheapish Duchini full face for a couple of years and decided to treat myself to a better bucket but wanted to try out a flip helmet before going down that route, one of my mates had one so I gave it a try but the front only went up so far (about 45 degrees) and it caught all the wind and at above 50 or 60 felt that it was dragging your head backwards. I abandoned that idea for a few months then read about the 'LS2 Convert' helmet where the front chin bar went all the way over the top of the helmet and down level at the back right out of the wind. well I have been riding with the Convert for about a year now and there is a lot to like about it. you can ride open faced with flip screen up or down, open faced with drop down sunnys and the flip up or down. Full face with all the same flip screen/sunny options as open face.

My only couple of gripes is it is a little bit bigger than a standard Full Face because of the flip mechanism also a little bit more wind noise than the standard Full Face. All in all a good bucket. Would I buy one again.....................Yes I believe I would.
Oh! I just thought of another couple of pluses with this bucket, you can take a drink from a bottle of water or soda without removing your helmet, like wise if you are a smoker (I'm not) also garages look on you more kindly if you have you flip front up when you go in to pay for fuel.
Roughly £200 I believe is good value, but then so was my full face Duchini £55 great value skid lid.

Use vinegar & salt mix to clean really soiled areas on your bike , brings it up brand new. remember to flush away with water after cleaning.

Yeah I heard Garry Lineker cleans his bike that way, sometimes with cheese and onion.
