For Sale & Wanted / WANTED - Rear fender, undertray for Gen 1
« on: 03 May 2017, 08:32:23 pm »
Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have a un-modified OE rear fender undertray for an 01-05 FZS going spare?  Apart from a couple of dubious examples in the US, there are none on eBay.

The previous owner butchered the original and I'm sick of getting covered in crap from the spray from the rear tyre even with a hugger fitted.

Cheers
AyJay.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / What's better than a Fazer 1000?
« on: 22 May 2016, 09:40:20 pm »
Two Fazer thousands!

Hooray!

The one of the left is an '01 and it's done 149,300 miles and I've just bought the '02 on the right which has done a tiny 34,400 miles and feels like new to ride. I got it for a steal and was dreading picking it up as I hadn't even ridden it, but it time warped me back to buying the old beast 14 years ago. It feels pretty much like new to ride and really shows how baggy and arthritic my much loved original is.

The only downside is sliver engine paint is in a state and the EXUP rattles like snake, but it's not like I haven't sorted those two problems out more than once in the last 14 years! But at the price, it was a no brainer. It was obviously a summer use only bike, and given it's only been doing 3000 miles a year it was probably a summer tourer for the last owner.

Thing is, where am I going to garage the MT-10 I'm going to buy next year?.....

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / eBay 20% off tonight.
« on: 22 October 2015, 08:31:02 pm »

Hi guys, if you don't know, eBay are doing a 20% off until 10pm tonight so I used the discount to buy a FoxHunter hydraulic 800lb bike lift for under 200 quid! Bonus. I've wanted one for ages but they aren't cheap.

The redemption code is CUKFLASH and you have to spend more than 20 quid and the max discount is 50 quid, but I saved 50 quid on the bike lift. More here

For Sale & Wanted / 2001 FZS1000 exhaust
« on: 12 October 2015, 08:28:02 pm »
I can't quite believe it but my standard exhaust is busy snapping in two where the link pipe enters the muffler can and it's on a countdown to falling off. Has anyone got a spare standard exhaust? I'm in the Beds/Milton Keynes area and can collect at the weekend.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Found that allen bit I lost at last!
« on: 21 July 2015, 09:43:48 pm »
Oh dear. For the final part of my engine repaint, I took the cam cover off last weekend and found this

Allen bit found at last
Allen bit found at last

Asides from all the corrosion and road grit that accumulates after almost a decade of use, I found that allen bit that I was looking for 3 years ago nestling on a cam. That's the first time the lid's been off in 90k miles so it must have been in there all that time. Amazingly all the valves clearances were within spec. Just 3 were on the limit, but even so, still within spec. What an engine.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Another engine repaint thread
« on: 27 June 2015, 11:43:38 pm »
As I had my radiator off for repair, I was looking at the sorry state of the engine and gasping in horror and at the same time, Red98's engine repaint thread came along and finally inspired me to get my ancient Fazer sorted out.

It's taken many many hours of prep work - 3 weekends worth in  fact, but after 38 seconds of Simoniz Engine Enamel it's finally looking like it used to 141,000 miles ago. I started with this:

Pretty grotty but the studs were ok because the exhaust has been off many times and maintained so I've replace the studs once already. These have done around 80k miles and apart from one, they're still ok
.

Bits of radiator and the crossbar engine mount primed for paint.

I can't tell you how many hours of MuckOff, washing, sanding, Dremeling and panel wiping went into this picture. It was a lot.

All masked up and ready for second coat. Just masking up took over two hours.

Spanking new.

Simoniz Engine enamel is very easy to work with and the results speak for themselves. If anyone has a bit of flaky paint around the generator cover where all silver engined Fazer's seem to go, just prep well and get it done. Next bike I get, I'm taking the front end off and giving it a clean and a respray before I even ride it, to give the front of the engine more protection against salt. And then I'll douse it with ACF50.

Next job, touch up the frame paint around the engine mounts and get the rear mount welded back onto the downpipes. And rebuild the forks. Again. This'll be the fourth time. Oh, and whip the cam cover off and repaint that. Jeez, it never ends.

For Sale & Wanted / TPS for a Gen 1 1000 needed
« on: 28 April 2014, 09:19:13 pm »
Hi everyone,

This is a long shot, but has anyone got a Throttle Position Sensor attached to a knackered set of FZS1000 Gen 1 carbs they'd be willing to sell? Mine's on the way out and a new one is hundreds.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / When your second gear goes pop: Engine rebuild
« on: 26 January 2014, 09:02:01 pm »
Hi guys,

Some of you may remember me posting many years ago that my second gear had gone pop and that I had replaced the entire lump rather than strip down the engine. Well, the bike has now down 117,000 miles and the replacement engine unit has now done 60,000, so I thought I'd better get on with reconditioning the original engine in case I need it. As luck would have it, a second hand gearbox came up on eBay for bargain £75, so I thought the time was right. It must have come from a very low mileage bike because it is almost perfect. Not a scratch on the selectors or the dogs, gearwheels almost brand new. A good start.

I watched John Frankenthal's R1 engine rebuild videos on YouTube several times
http://www.youtube.com/user/SupermotoJohn?feature=watch
and emboldened, I made a start.

The original engine has been sitting in the garage since 2006, so I cleared out the conservatory and started cleaning. After 57,000 miles and 7 years in a garage, it took a while.

The finish as we all know is pretty crap on Fazer engines. Believe me, after cleaning, it still looks bad and since the camera deceives, I have to tell you it looks worse in the flesh. But it's cleaner than it was. I've got a big problem with the studs which are well rusted in, and the oil return pipe bolts sheered with 0.1 ft/lbs or torque and will have to be drilled out.

I bought an electric rattle gun and various other tools and started unbolting. Here's what came out.
First, a very manky cylinder head. The cylinder tops are just as bad.

Although the original honing cross hatching is very much in evidence, the bores themselves have marks and I'm not sure whether they need reboring. Anyone care to suggest if they do? See the marks at 2 o'clock about 0.5cms from the top? You can feel very slight ripples if you run a finger over them.

Crank journals seem ok, as do the cams.

But there are significant pick up marks on the bearing shells probably from it running low on oil. This engine always burnt a lot of oil.

There's a nasty bit of damage on the inside of the gearbox where something hit it

But here's the piece de resistance

It had been slipping out of second and getting worse from the day I bought it. The cause is a known problem on 2001 Gen 1s and various R1s and is down to incorrectly cut dogs, so I understand. Staggering amount of damage though.

Comprehensively trashed. I thought it would just be the 2nd/6th gear wheels, but it ain't. And the dogs are scored and bent too.

And here are the bits from the gears which I found in the sump and went flying round the engine. Everywhere I look there are tiny little shards of metal coating every surface.

My next steps are to work out whether the cost of rebuilding it is worth it. I would like to reunite the original engine with the chassis for originality's sake, and although the gearbox hasn't cost much, I suspect I'm going to spend a bit of money. Possible rebore, pistons, rings, valve guide seals, gasket sets and so on. Is it worth it, I ask myself.

Anyone care to venture an opinion?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Giving a lift to a cricket
« on: 15 August 2013, 10:38:16 pm »
Look at this little fella. He managed to cling on to my brake fluid resevoir for 58 miles today 35 of which were motorway. When I got off the bike, he refused to let me get away and jumped onto my arm and then trousers. I had to prise him off and drop him on a bush in the garden.

Do you think he wanted to find pastures new or was following me home so he could steal my Fazer?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / 100,000 miles on a Fazer 1000. The truth.
« on: 20 February 2013, 08:46:12 pm »
I first came across the Fazer 1000 when I read the launch test in BIKE magazine. It wasn't given the greatest write up as they seemed to be expecting something more agressive like the current  Aprilia Tuono so I wasn't that interested in it being convinced that I needed a fairing to hide behind.

I first saw one in the flesh on St Albans' Hatfield Road and thought it looked pretty smart. At the time I had a Kawasaki ZX9 and the Fazer looked big and unsporty, but I loved that engine glinting in the sun and looking not unlike the CBX 6.

A year later, I was in Moore's motorcycles and just for the hell of it, I bagged a test ride on a black one. I'd become pretty fed up with the ZX9 over a couple of years and 30,000 miles because although fun when thrashed, the engine was a peaky nightmare and riding position was dreadful and it was the riding position of the Fazer that I wanted to experience.

What can I say. It blew me away. Here was a bike that was comfortable, fast, torquey and although a fair bit heavier than the ZX9, handled pretty well. And even without a fairing, there's wasn't much more windblast than the ZX. So I bought it on the spot.

Who'd have thought I'd still own it 12 years and 100,000 miles later. Why? Because nothing has yet beaten it for what it is and what it can do. Here's the full history.

2500 Bought second hand from Moore’s Motorcycles, St Albans. 2nd gear occasionally doesn't go home, but it's just like most Honda's in that respect.
4000 Scottoiler and Digital Gear indicator installed
5000 Engine occasionally shuts down for no reason. TPS is adjusted, never happens again
18000 My Fazer is featured in MCN
24000 Full service
24000 First Alpine trip. So much better than a ZX9 for touring.
30000 New chain and sprockets
35600 Cadwell Park trackday. First sign of 2nd gear trouble as it leaps out of gear and re-engages with almighty bang.
44000 Full service including valve check. Still jumping out of 2nd.
45000 Rear end is squatting and wallowing chasing a GSX-R. Something must be done. Buy an Ohlins rear shock and front springs and it's like a new bike. Expensive. Mandatory for a Fazer thou!
45000 Mallory Park trackday. Laps half the fast group in 10 laps (really. It did!). Still jumping out of 2nd
46000 Mirror snaps off. Fixed with a nut and screw
49000 Brands Hatch trackday. Getting faster. Jumping out of gear getting ever worse
57000 2nd gear goes west. on the day I lose my job. Oh smashing. Broken bike and no money. But at least it gives me time to fix it. I take the sump off and 2nd gear is stripped of teeth for a third of its circumference. It isn't as simple as a broken dog. Lot's of metal all over the place. Replace entire engine unit with £600 second hand unit from breakers in Aberdeen. It takes a week, but it's a great feeling when it starts again for the first time.
61000 Fork seals blow
62000 Forks pitted. Rechromed by Philpotts in Luton
63000 Find the FOCCers forum. What's this Ivan bloke. What? £110 for more power? Bought a kit and Ivanised it myself in 2 hours. And it's a new machine yet again.
65000 Battery replaced
67000 New chain and sprockets
70000 Radiator goes west. Replaced with 2nd hand from breakers
75000 Seat has split near the tank. Find a cheap one in East Germany on eBay
77000 Givi screen bought. Wish I’d bought it 70000 miles ago

78000 Swivelling bike on centrestand is not good. Breaks in half. Replaced with 2nd hand from breakers
78000 Second Alpine trip.
81000 Battery replaced
82000 Third trip to the Alps, France, Germany, Italy, Austria etc.  7 Countries, 900 miles in 18 hours and a police chase on the way home.
84000 EXUP valve now so rattly it’s annoying. Still operating perfectly, though. All allen bolts sheer whilst looking at them, they're so rotten. £45 second hand downpipes and £12 silencer purchased and fitted. Must get the old one refurbed
90000 Miles! Wow. This old girl is still going!!! Can I get it to 100,000?
91500 Fork seals blow.
92000 And blow again. NS Front fork seal replaced. Round off allen socket in fork base.
94000 Pull throttle cable snaps on the way home. In the dark. And rain.
99700 Rear caliper pins have now worn the locating holes oval. Buy  2nd hand from breakers
100000! It hit 99999 in the last 100 yards to work, so I go out at lunchtime and clock up that last mile. While I take a few photos of the moment, I feel quite emotional.

And it continues
101400 New Air filter
102000 EXUP pull cable snapped. Replaced with Wemoto 'Slinky Glide' pattern part
110,997 Flew through it's 9th MOT. Gave it an oil change as a reward.

So that's the truth about my Fazer ownership. All maintenance before the the gearbox crunched itself to death was done by dealers (Moore's Motorcycles and Flitwick Motorcycles, thank you!) and everything since has been done by me, and that's one of the great things about Fazer ownership, they're very easy to work on.

However, I feel pretty guilty because although oil, filters, pads, carb balancing, TPS, suspension  etc have been maintained at the recommended intervals, I still haven't check the shims in over 43,000 miles. Thing is, I never thought I'd still have it 5 years later, and I'm ashamed to say that I never considered it to be worth much after the new engine went in, so I couldn't see the point of booking it in for £500 service. I presume they must have been checked at some time, but it still goes like a rocket. This is also why this post is called The Truth. It's a guilty truth that I haven't treated it well.

I'm fairly sure the 2nd gear problem was there from new and it's a shame those 100,000 miles haven't been on the one unit, but I'm amazed that things like the discs are still well within service limits, the suspension linkages are still like new, the electrics and alarm are fine and so on. It's pretty scratched and 12 winters have knocked seven colours out of the finish on the engine, but it really is a remarkable bike and I'd happily take mine round the world even at this age.

I'd ride knowing that it would be comfortable, fast, economical and perfectly able to cope with anything I wanted to do with it, be it track day, commute or tour, and I'd ride knowing that I could fix it if it broke down and with the knowledge that this is the greatest bike ever built.

Happy 100th Birthday, my lovely old Fazer.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Wheel size. Shock. Embarrassment
« on: 03 December 2012, 09:11:32 pm »
Since I ride in London, I'm always checking the back wheel on the Gen 1 for nails and what have you, and today whilst checking I noticed that I'll be needing a new tyre in a couple of weeks time.

Nothing unusual there, but while I was spinning the wheel, I thought I'd check what profile it is. I know it's a 180 width. And lo and behold, there embossed on the tyre was the legend 160/60!

The dealer must have ordered for a 600 Fazer. Front and rear are Bridgestone 023s.

So, that's the shock. The embarrassment is that I haven't noticed over 5000 miles that it's the wrong tyre. Except, as it's worn down, I have noticed that the usual flop into a corner you get with a flattened off centre hasn't happened, and it definitely leans over more on the side stand than it does normally. And now I come to think of it, it's felt very agile and chuckable of recent. Hmm. Maybe I have noticed ...

But as far as grip and stability go, er, it's been business as usual. Not that we've had much chance of proper riding this year, what with the weather of course, but there have been one or two days where I've been proper thrashing it. And that v10 M5 was despatched with ease round my favourite corner ..

Anyone else had used a 160/60 on the thou, or noticed any big changes to feel with different widths/profiles etc?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Reading between the lines

This is interesting. Yamaha have released news of a new engine and new direction - a triple.

http://blog.motorcycle.com/2012/10/02/manufacturers/yamaha/intermot-2012-yamaha-unveils-crossplane-triple-concept/

It looks like it's housed in a streetbike chassis . . . Now, just suppose that was around 1200cc. New Fazer?

General / SMIDSY's
« on: 11 July 2012, 09:46:02 pm »
Anyone watching Horizon on BBC4 looking at human perception? Here's a good one. They just showed a clip of 6 guys playing basketball, 3 in yellow, 3 in blue, and we're asked to count the number of times the guys in yellow pass the ball. Ok, thought, this should be easy. I counted 13 passes. At the end of the clip the guy says 'did anyone notice anything strange there?' So we were then invited to watch the clip as you would normally. And a bloke in a gorilla suit walked through the middle of the basketball game, stopped, stood bang centre in the middle of the picture and waved.I didn't see it when I was counting the passes. Absolutely stunning that you can miss something as obvious as that. You want the answer to why SMIDSY's happen, it's visual perception problems .. ..

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Lots of Gen 1 in the new Jan 2012 issue of BIKE
« on: 26 November 2011, 11:25:25 am »
The issue's main theme is All Rounders and I'm pleased to see the Gen 1 beats the new Multistrada and the old VFR 750, not to mention the BMW GS 1200. Not bad for a bike designed probably 12 or 13 years ago.

I was at the Bike show last weekend and asked about whether there would be a crossplane Fazer (and begged them for a decent sized tank on it too). The Yamaha chap was saying nothing. . . .

Your Suggestions and How you can help / The old site is the Bible
« on: 05 July 2011, 11:20:48 pm »
Hi chaps, just stumbled across the new forum almost by accident. I see that the previous posts won't be transferred across, but will remain read-only once everyone's migrated.

Can I just say that it will remain read-only until something happens to Yuku, or Yuku close it down. Commercial sites don't give bandwidth away for free.

Now, since the old site is a colossal source of information, it has effectively become The Bible for Fazer owners. There is so much information there it really ought to be turned into a book, and pre-internet, it may well have been.

I implore the mods to find some way to save that information for posterity. Even the wayback machine only shows 7 snapshots from 2009 . . .
