What can be done about my forks
« on: 30 May 2017, 11:05:15 pm »
Hi guys

So the time has come where i need to address my forks, as you can see from the pictures attached they both have got this weird white rush on them.

It is really starting to get me down as it is now the worst part of the bike and I really need to do something about it.

Was wondering what my options are exactly? I am fully open to suggestions and would love to hear what you all recommend.

Thanks guys

Its corrosion, you can sand it off then paint or polish them

One of mine came like this.. i used a my air compressed 'dremel' with a polishing pad and took about 15 mins to buff out entirely. Autosol'd for a nice finish.
Must say, not quite that far gone.

Mines are heading in the same direction, I'm going to shotblast them and then add a hard matt black paint finish.
Treat everything in life the way a dog would- if you can't eat it or foc it, forget it.

Paint them faffing about polishing I used satin black on mine, the easiest way to remove old lacquer & corrosion is a mild abrasive wheel.
Stuff everything I've always got my bike :)

As the link jimjenco showed you mine are like it too, but not that bad so I have let it be. Yam changed it to paint which is easier to look after but I think the brushed polish looks much better than the dull silver paint.
Once you have got the clear lacquer off l am not sure how well the paint would stick to the surface and would easily chip I think, unless you did so much prep work to the surface - in which case stripping the clear lacquer and re shinning with a fine wet and dry and then a new coat of lacquer would look better and be quicker. They are not polished underneath but have a brush texture.
But then of course you start all over again with a chip in the lacquer letting in water and the white fuz spreading under the lacquer that you can not get too. Ahhhh

Is there such a thing as clear powder coating that will be stronger than spray lacquer.
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

Sand them back, primer then paint them. I did mine black and really pleased with them.

Chris

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

What about the old lacquer though doesn't that make the paint not go on so well?

That's why you sand them back first  ;)

Use etch primer on aluminium as well - helps the paint stay on better.

Thanks everyone for all the help and advice. There seems to be many different ways to sort this issue out. What I'm wondering now really is what is the best thing to do?

The idea of painting them black is appealing because it's easier.

But they would look nice as well if they were just cleaned up with Autosol and a lot of hard work - But how long would this take? is it even possible by hand?

Look forward to seeing what you guys think?

How much are they charging you to do both forks?
