FZS600 Fazer / Plastic carburetor intake valve
« on: 12 October 2022, 02:16:45 pm »
Hi,

I need to change these plastic intake valves, on picture number 19: http://yampart.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/YAMAHA-FAZER-FZS-600-CARBURETTOR-CARB-PARTS-DIAGRAM-YAMPART.COM-Copy.jpg

So far I've found them under parts no. 5DM-14113 and 5DM-14112.

112 are somewhat available to buy new, but 113 are not.

112 are supposedly from 1998-1999 models, and 113 from redesign.

Does anyone know if 112 will fit in model 2003? Have they changed anything in this department with redesign model?
I'm not sure if I can order 112s...

FZS600 Fazer / Complete new front fairing?
« on: 09 September 2020, 09:15:27 pm »
Hi,

Had a smallish accident this morning, for the first time in 23 years of riding bikes.

Kid went through a zebra crossing at full speed on his bicycle, not stopping to look left or right. I did what I best could and thanks to my reaction I only hit his rear bicycle wheel, but also caught a part of his rucksack and him with my fairing, which sent him spinning for 180 degrees. Landed on the tarmac with bruises and shock, but nothing serious.

I managed to stay on the bike, however my front fairing took a beating, broke and left side got pushed inside. Mountings for the fairing are all broken (mounting frame included). Inner black plastics are both warped. The left mirror is done too.

I'm looking to buy a complete new front fairing with frame, because this one cannot be patched.

Looked through Wemoto, but they don't have any. Ebay has partial fairing parts only, I need everything that goes in front except for the lights, instruments and blinkers.

Any clue where I might find that?

Thanks

A few months ago, my mechanic installed the original Racetech emulator and Ohlins linear springs, following kebab19's guide.

Can't remember the details right now, but I think it set compression conservatively at 2-3 turns.

I've been riding the bike since, and the front end feels pretty harsh over bumps, but more importantly, when going faster over longer depressions in tarmac, it doesn't feel as planted. As if it floats too much, especially when forks are fully extended (under acceleration).
On my route home, there's a nice fast 3-lane curvy road going uphill, but it's plagued with depressions in tarmac (if that's the right expression, pardon my english).
So when going fast on that road + leaning, the front end plays too much and makes me uneasy. Yet, when coming off that road and slowing down, then going over harsh bumps, it puts a lot of stress on my arms.

Now, I must admit I don't quite get what which settings exactly do, and how to tweak them to remedy this problem.

I need to: a) lower the harshness and b) get rid of the fork play when under acceleration.

Do I increase or decrease rebound? Or compression? Or preload? It is now preloaded a bit (I gave them a few turns).

Can someone enlighten me please... thanks

FZS600 Fazer / Replacement cooling pipes
« on: 20 April 2018, 11:32:33 pm »
http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,24057.0.html

So, my cooling pipes are gone :(
My mechanic tried to save them by welding them, but it didn't help.
They have been eaten out from the inside. He says it's because they're made of iron.

I tried finding them online, but no luck so far.
I'd appreciate it if you have any ideas where I could find them.

Thanks!

For Sale & Wanted / Wanted: In urgent need of cooling pipes
« on: 20 April 2018, 10:49:12 pm »
Hi all,

I need 3 cooling pipes that got rusty over time and started leaking.
These pipes are no longer being produced or sold as new.

I named these pipes myself because even their names are no longer displayed, so pardon my liberty:

1. T-pipe, part no. 5DM124820000 / 5DM-12482-00-00, visible here as number 15: https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/en/yamaha-parts/2003-fzs600-fazer-motorcycles/water-pump

2. Small pipe, part no. 5DM125880000 / 5DM-12588-00-00, visible here as number 4: https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/en/yamaha-parts/2003-fzs600-fazer-motorcycles/radiator-hose

3. Long pipe, part no. 5DM124850100 / 5DM-12485-01-00, visible here as number 9: https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/en/yamaha-parts/2003-fzs600-fazer-motorcycles/radiator-hose

For visual reference, I took pictures as well:

My bike is 2003, but I think these pipes could work from 98+ models as well...

If you have these pipes, please contact me, but only if they're in good condition !

Thanks

FZS600 Fazer / What are my rear shock options ?
« on: 23 November 2017, 11:17:21 am »
So...my rear shock is done.
I did kebab's front forks modification (emulators) and now the front end is like new, but it highlighted the problem I've been suspecting - the rear shock needs to be changed.
All I'm finding on the internet is the YSS Z-series monoshock: http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/yamaha/fzs_600_fazer_sp/02-03/picture/rear_yss_z-series_monoshock/ which is not particularly cheap (can be found on ebay for less).

Are there any other worthy options to consider ?

Thanks

FZS600 Fazer / Unknown (yet) problem
« on: 10 August 2017, 11:55:27 am »
Every time after finishing a ride, if it's passed more than 15min, when I turn to ignition, the pump starts working but shouldn't. You can hear it clicking several times. Then the engine starts (with difficulty) and when it starts you can smell the gasoline.

My mechanic serviced the carburetor recently and changed some rubber seals, for which he suspected could be causing the trouble. For a few days the bike was starting normally and pump wouldn't click after a ride, but now it started clicking again and starts with a difficulty again  :(
What could be causing this ?

FZS600 Fazer / Inner diameter of stock downpipes?
« on: 22 June 2017, 02:23:33 pm »
Thinking of buying Black Widow downpipes, but I'm not sure if I'd get any power improvements over stock pipes?

The guy at Black Widow says their inner diameter is 32mm, anyone knows stock diameter?

FZS600 Fazer / Good, sticky grips?
« on: 18 August 2016, 01:35:55 pm »
I recently bought some shitty £10 grips from local store, only to find out they slip in hot weather when palms get sweaty, and that's often here in Croatia because we have long hot summers.

Any recommendation for better ones?

EDIT:
for the reference, it's these ones:

Difficult start issue

Well I don't know who else to ask so maybe you guys could help.
I have an issue with starting my bike when engine is hot.

This is most prominent in hot weather, like now during summer, when outside conditions are: stale hot air with temps >30deg. Celsius

The issue happens only in these conditions:
1. the bike needs to be ridden hard (or long) so it warms up nicely
2. after the ride it needs to rest for at least 1hr (the more it rests the more difficult it starts later)
3. the weather conditions must be as described above

Starting it up after all 3 conditions are met is a difficulty I've been facing for the last 4-5 years. It usually takes at least 3 tries to get it started and once it starts, it does it gradually. Stutters for 2-3sec then normalizes.

4 different mechanics can't solve the problem, the last one serviced engine valves, carburetors, changed the battery, spark plugs, checked the voltage of engine electronic starter, etc.
In his own words, there's nothing wrong with the bike and it should start without problems, but it doesn't.

Since it's difficult to explain such things, I've recorded two videos.
They're both me trying to start it with above conditions met (ridden hard, rested for 3hrs, outside is summer 36deg. here)

See for yourself and tell me everything's ok:

Problem with power after rejetting

Besides problem with starting, now I have another problem. The above mentioned mechanic has installed a bit wider nozzles in the carburetors, because I wanted to add some power. I don't know which ones, probably the "beginner" ones, since my bike isn't tuned except for the K&N air filter and Arrow exhaust can (stock downpipes).

Now it pulls nicely through low and mid range, better than before, but after 9000rpm the problems start. It's just not explosive anymore, but it should be. As if power band now is linear instead of exponential.
Not just that, but riding it on 9-10.000rpm for a few seconds and opening the throttle now creates a brief loss of power - it halts/chokes, then opens up again, but not as powerful as before.
It lost power and explosiveness in the upper rpm.

Did you have those issues after rejetting ? Any ideas why it happens? Maybe it needs wider downpipes and more open air filter now?
In any case, I think I'll be returning the old nozzles, I'm sad enough with all this anyway  :\

FZS600 Fazer / Tightening the spark plugs
« on: 25 June 2015, 12:53:05 pm »
Recently I changed the spark plugs.
Upon installation, I tightened them fairly by hand, but not too much.
After riding a bike for few days, I went to check them and found out they were loose. By loose I mean they could be unscrewed easily.
I suppose it happened because I tightened them while they were cold, then they expanded during riding, then shrunk again after cooling.

My question is, should I re-tighten them now, while they're cold? Will they cause problems once they start expanding again?

General / Biker wedding

Just spotted this today on the boardwalk.
A proper bike, too. 2001-2003 ZX-9R.
Good to see people still keeping and loving machines like that, they usually swap them for something newer or get rid of them.

FZS600 Fazer / Yoshimura full exhaust system ?
« on: 17 March 2015, 10:41:06 pm »
I've been trying to find these on the internet but to no avail.
The reason is, I made a huge mistake some 6-7 years ago when my friend purchased a crashed FZS600 with Yoshi full system installed.
He later repaired it and, naturally, I wanted to see what's the difference between his and mine (I have stock downpipes and Arrow slip-on).
The difference was very noticeable. His bike had more torque and more power, also sounded a bit deeper and scarier.

He asked me several times if I would wanna buy that exhaust (complete), but I refused because I thought it wasn't necessary, so he sold it to someone else.
Now, I'd sell a kidney to have one, because I find myself remembering each year how good it actually was.  :'(

So, if anyone knows of a Yoshimura full exhaust system for FZS600, either being sold as new or used, please let me know  :kiss

FZS600 Fazer / Fork oil - amount, specifications ?
« on: 27 October 2014, 11:37:20 pm »
Hi,

I'd like to change my fork oil (2003 fzs600), but don't know which oil to put and how much.

Here it says:

Quote
Use either of two methods: A) measure 465 ml per fork leg B) measure 132 mm air gap (room from the surface of the oil to the top of the fork without the springs and with the fork fully compressed) Note 1: It is very important to have the numbers correct and - even more important - the same at both sides. If you miss out on this, it may result in poor handling and even have disastrous consequences. Note 2: Measuring air gap is recommended over measuring volume, and not especially more difficult, it will be more precise and yield better results. You can use any measuring device dropped in at the desired length and fill until the oil slightly touches OR you can overfill and suck out the excess oil with a hose that you drop in at the specified depth. Note 3: Recommended oil is a grade 10W fork oil. Addendum: You can tweak you forks according to your liking, e.g. by putting 15W grade fork oil in or reducing the air gap by a few millimeters.

Is that correct or ?

FZS600 Fazer / Oil recommendation?
« on: 02 July 2014, 09:42:17 am »

What oil do you recommend for a 35k+ miles machine ?
Last time, they put in this oil:  CASTROL Power 1GPS 4T 15W-50
It's part synthetic. I thought these machines need fully synthetic oil ?
Did they screw me over ?

FZS600 Fazer / Pirelli Diablo Rosso II - the worst tyres I ever had
« on: 16 June 2014, 10:20:53 am »
I've done over 35k miles with my Fazer and changed a lot of different tyres, including Bridgestone, Metzeler, Michelin, etc.
The last ones I had were Michelin Pilot Road 3 (I think it was 3). They were great.
I usually do 70% city and 30% open road driving, they were good because they lasted long and actually handled very well.
I ran them at 2.5bar front and 2.8 rear.

Then I had to change them. Visited a local bike tyre shop (guy specializes for bike tyres). After talking to him, describing my driving habits, etc. he recommended me Diablo Rosso II.
He said they were good all-around tyres and that they will last long.
On the first ride they handled like garbage, slippery, unpredictable. Very unreliable.
I thought it was because it's still new. Gave them a couple of hundred kilometers to "break in".
Nope, still garbage.
I've done ~1500miles on them by now, and they still suck.
They're good when driving straight, but once you start leaning through corners they start slipping unpredictably. They're very strange, in a bad way. It's like that they slip a bit each time you change tilt quickly.
They're also not very good for going fast through long corners while leaning. They constantly slip-hold-slip-hold-slip-hold.

Now, I read reviews on the internet and people seem to be really pleased with them, so I wonder who's crazy here?
I run them at the same pressure as I did Michelins. I found it provides for faster leaning.
They were new when I bought them, I checked the date.

I had to write this because I still can't believe how bad they are, and now I'm stuck with them, which pi**es me off.
They're so bad, that my friend told me he saw them bobbing (letting go) while he was riding behind me last weekend.
Sorry for funny words, but English is not my primary language  :rolleyes

FZS600 Fazer / A few concerns...
« on: 10 June 2014, 11:16:15 am »
Hello,

I was wondering if you're familiar with these symptoms that I recently started having:

1. Clutch doesn't release smoothly. It comes to ~90% of being released, then suddenly releases completely. It creates "kick" when starting on green light, and it is probably not good for whole transmission / chain.
I changed clutch plates a year ago, they're not worn. What could cause this ?

2. Something develops noise on exactly 6000rpm. It sounds like school ring, only less loud. It's fast paced metal noise, as if you take two metals and hit them gently one to each other very fast (maybe 10-20 times / second).

3. Last year my front left fork leg blew its oil seal. I had replaced seals and oil in local bike repair shop. Ever since, I don't feel confident in front end, although everything works as it should. Forks squeak when they run over dents (deeper dents, when they need to travel a lot) and something knocks somewhere in the front end (doesn't matter if brakes are applied or not).

4. I think that engine creates more vibrations in higher RPMs. I'm no mechanic, so pardon my ignorance, but does this engine sit on some kind of bushings? Maybe they need change? After all, it has ~35.000 miles.

5. The engine starts difficultly when it's hot. When it's cold, it's OK although not perfect, but when it's hot sometimes I have to start it several times for it to actually start, and when it does, it starts barely. You can almost hear cylinders firing up one by one until it stabilizes after 1-2 sec, then it's ok.
After that it works fine, it has power and doesn't exhaust strange smoke, although you can smell gasoline strongly until it stabilizes.
A friend says it's the problem with carburetor, it doesn't mix well or is in need of changing some rubbers inside (don't know exactly). What do you think?

6. My front brake lever feels "sticky" and bumpy on the start of the travel. It didn't do that until recently. Is there an easy way to fix this, maybe to lube something? Or do I need to take it to mechanic to bleed possible air ?

Thanks

FZS600 Fazer / Different headlights for 03 Fazer
« on: 16 August 2012, 02:15:58 pm »
Hello

I'd like to slightly improve headlights (and maybe later tail lights) of my Fazer.
I'd like them to retain stock look of the headlights with maybe modernized internals, such as lenses with ordinary bulbs or maybe even xenons, but xenons require lenses anyway.
I tried searching for something like that but didn't find anything, maybe you have some suggestions?
I must say that I don't like mods that require changing of the front mask or any drastic alterations to the bike whatsoever, so basically I'm searching for something nearest to stock look..
