General / Chinese Brembo Master Cylinder copies/fake (latest version)
« on: 25 October 2019, 08:56:54 am »
I decided to have a look at these new Chinese Brembo master cylinder copies, I previously had one of the older type (a copy of the 19 RCS).   The older ones, certainly the one I got, had a number of issues that in my opinion made them unusable without a fair bit of modification - as I mentioned in the post I put up - some were minor, like the rubber boot not fitting, some were major, like the piston being completely wrong and the pivots being not only soft alloy but the wrong size.  I stuck this on the FB page but thought I would stick it here as I have now used it for enough miles to uncover any potential issues.

Anyway - I later fitted one of the new (at the time) clutch perch/levers that were actually much better made.  Around the same time they started offering these new master cylinders that appeared to be a step up in quality.

As some sort of disclaimer or waiver of responsibility - I don't sell these nor would I actually recommend getting one unless you know what you are doing.  I don't condone cheap copies etc but in the interests of "taking a gander" I am putting this up -I find it interesting at the very least.

So - first off, the price - I got this on an Aliexpress flash sale for £15 - delivered......from the other side of the world...

It is a copy of the Brembo RCS 19 Costa Corta.

It arrived in 6 days.

First off, it looks great from a quality perspective.  Feels solid, certainly a big step up from the old version.  It looks like the type of thing you might use to fight crime with in some of failed dystopian future...

It comes with everything required to fit, bolts, brake light switch, reservoir + hose etc (the reservoir is fine but it is still very small, the same as the older versions - like a pit bike one)

Taking it apart for a closer look.

The business end of the lever.

It is a beefy lever, seems quite well make - it even has the rubber grommet covering the 18/20 adjuster.

The span adjuster is vastly improved from the old version, this actually works for the full range.  The previous ones had an ill fitting tension spring that would not give any resistance to the screw when adjusting from the standard position - this would cause the screw to wobble and eventually fall out as it was just a loose fitting screw adjuster.  This new one is actually very good and works well with a decent feel to the turn.

This second adjuster (which sits vertically) is supposed to adjust some sort of bite point but in fact does nothing.  It is purely cosmetic on this copy, it spins as it should and has a lovely polished pivot pin and nice retaining holes but in the end that is it...  again - why they go to all that trouble then not actually have it do its function is a mystery.  Needless to say, I set it to its Race position.. because fast.

You can also see the pivot bushing.  This is now well made and needed no modification.  The old versions were weird, they looked like some sort of cast tube that had a big difference in diameter at the top/bottom.

The back side of the lever, where the actuator rod fits is still the eccentric cup setup - you turn it and it alters the angle the rod pushes the piston.  I mean, it does work and it is cleaner than the previous ones, smooth in the cup etc.  You can see the bolt holding the lever end (so it rotates up in a crash rather than snapping) still uses the rolled pin.  Real Brembos don't have the pin, they use a longer bolt with a nut and is simply clamped up.  I will do the same to this if I keep it on.  The whole lever is pretty nice though, it all fits nice and firm and has no real wobbly/play in the pivots etc

The rubber boot covering the piston/actuator fits nicely and shock horror, evidence of some sort of assembly grease being used!  Unheard of on the old ones!!  You can also see the brake switch which fits on the under side of the unit.  The switch looks fine to me, waterproofing is there etc.  The connectors are not the same as the Fazer so I had to cut them off and stick some appropriately sized blade connectors on.  All the surfaces are clean and sharply cast.

Removing the rubber boot uncovers the piston front face and the retaining clip.  Again, looks fine.

Its not fine though...  I only noticed when putting it back together because, well, you don't expect to have to check but the clip has no retaining groove.  They are simply relying on the steel clips edge to bite into the softer ally bore wall.  Lovely.  This is very risky because it isn't fail safe at all, this clip holds the brake together essentially, it also means the piston resting position to be set by pure chance as it rests with a spring pushing it to the front against the clip to set it...

You can see here the plain cylinder bore with no groove for the retaining clip.  The main bore itself is good though, the previous ones had burrs around all the entry/exit pathway holes for the fluid circuits, these new ones are all nicely finished.

So, into the lathe it goes to cut a seating groove.

We had to make a little mounting plate to get it setup in a 4 jaw chuck as there was no real way to grip it securely.  This is the underside of the master cylinder and you can see the banjo bolt hole and main lever pivot holes.  They are fine.

So, with a groove now cut, this is the piston.  Again, this is vastly improved over the old units.  The seals fit well and they have nice proud lips.  Previous ones had very badly fitting seals and a new piston had to be made.  You can see the return spring at the rear of it as well as the little internal cap/seat that pushes on the back of the master cylinder bore.

The circlip holding this together is really too small, you can see how it is stretched (and on removal it has actually bent open) so I stuck a correct sized one on.  This isn't really an issue but as it is the main brake I thought it best to sort it.

Built it all back up and fitted to the bike.  As with the last one this bled up extremely easily with the upper bleed point, the switch works for the light.  I had to make a mount for the reservoir as the supplied one is a straight type piece but it needs to be held about an inch further forward.

I have had this on now for just over 4000 miles and it has been great, feel and power are very good - it shares the same geometry as a real unit - and it has held up very well, it is still solid and no additional wobble from any of the pivots - it has less wobble than the OEM one I took off.  The main pivot pin is aluminium (anodised gold) which isn't really ideal but it is a solid 1/4 inch size so it isn't going to break.  It is showing signs of wear on the anodising so I will make a steel one I think.

They are still not a viable solution for fitting and forgetting though, they still need work to make safe IMO so I can't readily recommend them as a usable product, they are also copies which is not a great thing in itself.  You could argue that for £15 in a pinch you could fit one but they take days/weeks to arrive depending on how lucky you are so that doesn't really make sense - you could quickly find an OEM one in that time.  The upper bleed screw is also a little too long, it looks a bit naff being stuck out so much so it needs either turning down or a replacement shorter one being sourced.

Hopefully if you are contemplating trying one if these you might think twice and save your cash.  If you can modify it yourself then they do become viable but you would want to be confident in your work for obvious reasons.

General / Unbranded Helmet headset, pretty good
« on: 27 July 2019, 08:13:01 pm »
My cardo Q3 recently gave up the ghost so I was looking to get another. Saw an unbranded one on eBay, a BT-S3 model. They come with all sorts of brands stuck on but this is blank, £30 delivered.

I wasn't expecting the same thing as a scala but it is pretty impressive for the price. The speakers etc are about the same, I can't really notice a difference.  The radio, which is pretty much what I use it for 99% of the time is great, good signal, easy tuning.

Phone calls (via Bluetooth) are also as good as the Q3. Battery has lasted a full week without charging (about 8hrs use with radio and a few phone calls).

The only negatives I have come across are that unlike the Q3 you can't set a phone number to call when you press the call button thrice. It simply calls the last number you rang. The buttons are OK, not quite as easy to find with gloves on but not bad at all.

You also can't preset radio stations. It's just like the good old days of one channel.

One reason I shelled out for the scala was for its bike to bike stuff but I have actually only used that feature once, when trying it with a friend... I haven't tried it with this one yet.

For £30 it is definitely worth a punt.

Some pics from my brothers first endurance race at the Spa classic.  I meant to take my SLR but with space a premium and not wanting to have the hassle of lugging that around I just used my phone camera...  Event was absolutely massive, 1000s of bikes and the weather was as good as it could have been, very hot!

The bike he has built is the Baxi No 27 Ducati.

Narrowest bike award...

The Suter 580cc GP bikes were there going around in the 2 stroke class.  The sales van had no mention of luggage options for the bike...

I ran some pictures of my (old) Fazer through an AI programme developed by Google (Deep Dream).  Here is what it produced.

Some stylised images:

Psychedelic era!

Apparently it sees a lot of wolf/canine in the image...  An eye on the top box?  The background trees/bushes look great, im sure I see a Chinese Dragon in the lower right bit above the grass...!

something different at least :)

General / Muc Off etc
« on: 10 August 2018, 03:05:36 pm »
Does anyone use these types of products?

I have been using it for a bit (got 2 bottles at a closing down sale) but have noticed that whenever I need to do anything on the bike everything is bone dry rather than retaining any lubricant/grease!  Changed the tires, the front pinch bolt on the forks was proper dry and took a fair amount of force.  Likewise the spindle at the clamp end was bone dry and needed a lot of persuasion.  Rear spindle was the same.  My front brake lever was feeling a bit notchy so I took it off and cleaned/lubed the pivot points etc but again, the bolts, bushing etc were bone dry.

You could say that maybe it was the bike but I have serviced these things since owning and always greased them up etc, never had a problem before using this muc off.  Think I will give it a miss...

He made pretty much everything, the frame, swingarm, suspension links, tank, triple clamps, exhaust etc.  Sounds awesome and feels half the weight of the Fazer!

General / Embarrasing!
« on: 02 October 2017, 09:51:00 am »
Got to work this morning, went in, got changed.  Popped back to the bike to get my lunch.......where is the top box?  Got my gear back on and rode back along my route, found what was left of the box and the contents strewn over the expressway about 2 miles from the office, do'h.  Had to dart in/out of traffic retrieving my various top box flopsom, my lunch, spare clothes and some bars for a member on here.

Got pretty much everything that was in there but a few things had been run over, including the crash bars :(  Had to leave a pair of emergency undies on the other side of the road as I wasn't prepared to stop traffic for them haha so just kicked the remaining bits of top box off the road and left it at that!  Could have been worse I suppose.

For Sale & Wanted / FZS 1000 Gen 1
« on: 26 June 2017, 08:40:06 pm »
I was thinking of doing my bike up a bit, a summer spruce so to speak, but in doing so I came across another at a price that was too good to miss, so I got it...

This is by no means a pampered princess, it has been my daily work horse for 3 years or so and has reached 98600 miles.  I got it as a Cat C and repaired it although it was simply a few cosmetics really, nose, headlights and the rad had been bent back on the side.  It wasn't one that needed new forks etc, it looked like it had fallen off its stand or something.  It has a couple of small dings in the tank (from the bars hitting it no doubt).

I put R1 forks on (4XV) with 10kg springs.  These have just had new seals and oil.  The shock was past its sell by date so I replaced it with a BMW S1000RR one - again with a stiffer spring (ie stiffer than the BMW spring).  R1 back wheel with torque arm removal.  It has one of those Yamaha rear racks (in silver).  HEL braided front lines.

It will also come with the modded Chinese brembo master cylinder and clutch perch/levers.  This is the unit I reviewed on this forum and has been perfect.  STD ones will of course be sold with the bike.

I have, this morning, had the bike MOT'd and it passed fine, a few advisories on pads as I knew at this point I was letting it go so didn't bother replacing anything although they are still fine.

Chain and sprockets are pretty good, I think i put them on about 10k ago.  Recent bearings in the swing arm.  EXUP is fine, never stuck (although I use it every day).  It has an Akrapovic silencer, full titanium and a Ti link pipe (from an R1 so it has been cut'n'shut to fit, again).  Unfortunately this was all crumpled up when I was rear ended at a junction last year, I fixed it all up and straightened the silencer but there are ripples in it slightly, not that it affects anything.  When I got the bike the ignition lock and key was pretty worn out so if you put the steering lock on it was a bit of a lottery when it came to getting it off.  This resulted in up to 5 mins of jiggling/waggling before you got it off.  I stopped using it and when I did the R1 fork conversion I didn't make any effort to get that lined up.  If you wanted to it would be a simple process of adding some washers/spacers to line up the lock with the frame hole.

As I said the bike is far from showroom condition.  It is used all year, all weathers and has endured very little cosmetic care.  As a work horse it has always had maintenance in that respect, bearings, seals, chains etc.  The fairing infills are present but cracked/taped up.  Seat cover has 2 parts where the seam has come apart.  If you wanted to get this into showroom condition then consider it a project bike... It has never let me down, doesn't smoke, pulls like it should, the engine isn't particularly noisy, rides very nice.

Not sure about a "fair" price but what I have been offered for bits off it (the fork conversion, swingarm/R1 wheel), headlights etc I would be wanting to start haggling at £700.

98600 miles.
R1 forks - new seals, 10nm springs.

BMW S1000RR rear shock. Stiffer spring.
R1 rear wheel (6 inch for 190 tyres)
R1 rear caliper and torque are removal.
I replaced the front disks a while ago so they are decent.
12 months MOT
EXUP valve has never stuck, no errors etc
new exup cables fitted last year.
Chinese World Famous "brembo" 19 RCS maser cylinder.
Chinese "brembo" clutch perch/lever.
Alloy radiator.
One of those fancy Yamaha racks (in silver).
std screen
1 Key.
tool kit.

If you look at my old posts you might notice some things I have not listed.  I will be removing the scottoiler, renthal bars (std ones will be on), top box and heated grips.

I am selling these gloves after only 2 rides use.  I got them in haste to replace my old summer gloves (only size they had in) and they felt ok in the house. Riding with them and they are a little big for me.

Really good gloves, kangaroo palms, kevlar etc I was impressed enough to buy them in a smaller size.

As mentioned I have used them twice so the condition is excellent.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / EXUP cables
« on: 24 February 2016, 09:04:18 pm »
Just wired my exup valve fully open...

I got rear ended while at a junction the other day which shunted my exhaust forward crushing the silencer and link pipe.  I thought that was more or less the full extent of the damage (the undertray/reg plate were also both broken) and straightened/bashed the pipe (which needed welding as it split at the crease) +silencer back to allow me to use it for my daily commute.  It seems that the shunt also bent the headers forward a few inches which snapped both my exup cables so for the last couple of days the bike has been unable to pull up to motorway speeds any faster than a transit van!  I can't straighten the headers without removing and looking at the bolts/clamps at the engine side they will likely never go back on, or come off without breaking, we got them bent back a bit but I had to "modify" the center stand bump stop arm to get it to sit on the link pipe stop plate.  It has no doubt increased the mass centralisation a bit though...

So, looking around new exup cables are pretty expensive or there are pattern ones for around £35.  Anyone used them?

Or is it worth risking second hand ones.  I seem to remember someone talking about a rebuild kit from Venhill IIRC but I can't find any for sale.
