FZS600 Fazer / Clutch Slip on new clutch :(
« on: 08 April 2014, 11:49:35 am »
Hi guys,

I installed a set of new EBC clutch plates last weekend, first proper ride out on the bike today and its slipping quite a bit under load. One of the steel plates had a little bluing on but nothing major.

The cable is adjusted to the correct tension at the lever 1cm of slack movement. And it bites and feels really positive on initial engagement but it slips like a b**ch at 5k and again at 9k.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

FZS600 Fazer / FZS 600 Speedo sensor
« on: 07 April 2014, 02:38:16 pm »
Hi guys,

Tis a while since I've posted, the bike's been hibernating in the garage over winter while I've been wroking on the T4 camper van.

Now thats sold I've spent some time on the Fazer, new clutch, clutch springs, cable, stainless exhaust downpipes, oil and filter change and she's running sweet  :D

However, I took it for a front tyre change at a local garage and the bloomin speedo packed in on the way home :rolleyes

I took it back and they were sound about it, apologised and stuff and said they'd order the part in question. Its a plastic collar with a couple of lugs on the top that fit into the wheel, does anyone know of the part? I can't seem to find it on any parts sites, just wondering how much it will cost & how available it is.

Don't want to be riding it without speed for very long!

Thanks,

Phil

FZS600 Fazer / Removing Rust from the Standard Exhaust
« on: 03 June 2013, 01:43:40 pm »
Hi guys,

I haven't been on here in a while, little riding recently combined with moving house has meant I've had hardly any time for anything!

We've now moved house, and I have a garage, so the Fazer is tucked away all dry at night now as opposed to being out in the weather.

Its going in for its MOT on Saturday and I've been getting it ready for the summer after riding it all winter then putting it away since March, sadly I can't ride it this week as no MOT and a rear tyre squared off with winter riding and down to the minimum.

I've already put new front callipers on, braided hoses, sorted out the binding rear brake, un-stuck and lubed (ooherr) up a lot of parts. left to do is;

New Clutch,
New Rear Pads,

and sort out the exhaust manifold, I've taken the full exhaust off and there is quite a bit of rust that needs sorting out before I re-spray Matt Black again and put it back on.

My question is; what's the best way to get rust off? I've heard Phosphoric Acid works well and a sanding drill bit, just wondering if there are any major doo's and don't's that people have come across as I imagine that its slightly different doing an exhaust due to the high temperatures that can be reached (so Kurust etc is off limits?)

Thanks as always

FZS600 Fazer / New Front Brake Seals
« on: 02 March 2013, 08:04:32 pm »
Hi guys,

I'm gearing up for a bit of time in the car in mid march to early april and i've got a shopping list of stuff to sort out, first on the list is rebuilding the front brakes as they need doing.

I left the bike standing over Christmas for two weeks (when the snow came) and the brakes seized up, i managed to get them back to working order but they need the seals replacing and a good clean, so im going to take them off in a couple of weeks, order some braided lines and new seals.

The question I have is if anyone has purchased seals off ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150910673906?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649)? They seem like really good value, but I don't want to buy a cheap pattern part that won't fit and I won't be able to return.

As always, comments appreciated!

thanks

FZS600 Fazer / HOW MUCH...for a service????! In Leeds
« on: 19 February 2013, 09:36:45 pm »
I called my local motorbike garage at the weekend, the engine is running a little rough, nothing major, just hunting a little at idle. and as I don't have the first clue about servicing carbs and we are in the process of moving house I felt it would be easier to pay for a small service (separate thread detailing that I've changed the oil so explained that this wasn't required).

After explaining to the guy who runs the joint the slightly rough idle, he explained that with an engine of that mileage (37k) it is likely that a valve could be sticking and causing the rough idle, that people oft blame carbs, do a tune and nothing changes. So, naturally, I asked what would be involved in a service and how much it would cost...

big intake of breath...

TO service it, check valve clearances, any required shims, fluids, air filter, tune up and time... £370!!!

I politely said no thanks, hung up the phone and started chewing over my options, option 1 as I see it is live with the rough idle until we have moved, and do the service myself (a viable option as I'm having to buy a car for the school run), option 2 pay the man (not foc-ing likely), option 3 come on here, check how hard it is to do the work (carb tune, valve clearance check and the necessary replacement of anything i find wrong), option 4 ask all you find people if anyone knows of a garage in Leeds that doesn't charge the earth!!

Thanks in advance

FZS600 Fazer / Spurious Oil Warning Light
« on: 27 January 2013, 03:12:49 pm »
Hi everyone!

Its been a while since I've been on here. new born and the missus not being well has meant I've been using the car to get to work and the 600 has been under cover. I've periodically started it and done some maintenance (sticking pistons on the front brakes gear lever sticking) that has been caused by the weather and lack of use (can't wait to get it in a garage!)

One thing I'm not able to sort though is the oil warning light being on, it was a bit low (bottom of the viewing glass) but I've topped up and its still staying on... Its a bit un-nerving even though I know there is enough oil in the engine now.

I'm going to be riding it too and from work all week and don't really want to do any damage, could it be a dodgy connection??

All comments appreciated as always guys.

FZS600 Fazer / clunking chain...
« on: 04 November 2012, 09:17:52 pm »
hi all,

noticed that since adjusting the chain for the first time since owning, (it was very slack, about 10cm of play), that there is a strange clunking coming from near the front sprocket, it only seems to do it on pulling off / at slow engine speeds (or its too loud at speed to hear it).

Any suggestions on what it could be? I checked the chain again today and it needed adjusting, so thats going to need changing, I'm just hoping the clunking isn't anything serious. Is there a bearing on the sprocket that could have gone?!

Thanks for your comments

FZS600 Fazer / Its foc'ing boiled over...
« on: 18 October 2012, 08:09:51 pm »
hey guys, bit of a crap end to the day...

Normal commute home, not going nuts staying below 8k all the way back, noticed as I got to within 5 miles of home that it sounded like the fan had kicked in, but couldn't be sure as my earplugs are pretty good, I should have stopped but couldn't be sure it was the bike. First mistake!

I continued home, checking at each set of lights but couldn't pin the noise down to the fan and didn't notice the coolant that had sprayed all down the side of the bike. Second mistake!

got to within 400 yards of home and the temperature warning light came on...oh F@"k... I stopped immediately, killed the engine and got off, realised it was the fan and spotted the coolant all over the engine. I waited for it to cool down and then road the last 400 yards home, coasting with the engine off for the last 100.

Looking at it, its mostly down the right hand side of the engine, there isn't any water left in it but the oil is at normal level and there isn't any water in the oil (as far as I can tell by checking under the oil cap for residue).

Whats the most common solution? Thermostat, pipe popped off / split? I know its a shot in the dark without you guys seeing it. How should I go about checking for the most common things? I've never worked on a bike, lots of cars but not a bike. I'm guessing that once the tank is off its all easy to see?

Is it likely that I'll have done any damage to the engine by running it until the temperature warning light came on?

As always, I'll appreciate any comments, thanks

FZS600 Fazer / Insurance...
« on: 09 October 2012, 05:32:20 pm »
just thought I'd have a quick look at how much it would cost to insure a thou' if I upgrade a year after having my licence with 1 years no claims! (i was a bit bored...)

MDirect represent good value I feel...

Its an absolute joke where these calculations come from, how is that good value when the bike was only worth a notional £2.5k?!!

FZS600 Fazer / heated grips, long johns and heated vests...
« on: 01 October 2012, 10:01:23 am »
hi all,

I’m starting to prepare for the winter months of riding my 70 mile round trip commute and have found these http://www.windingroads.co.uk/shop/product.php/116/symtec-motorcycle-heated-grip/2a3b613753dc826371496ce81eb8c020 and was wondering if anyone has had any experience of this type of heated grip. Do the existing grips come off in a way that they can be put back on or will I have to buy new grips after trying for ages and then going at them with a Stanley knife out of frustration?! Also how effective are they versus the full change of grip to Oxfords?

I don’t really want to have to go for Oxford Hot Grips as I like the look of the standard grips and they seem a little more streamlined and low key (the switch is tiny compared to the oxfords bar mounted affair)

Second question is; can anyone recommend a decent heated vest / thin jacket that runs off the battery and doesn’t cost the earth? I’ve been looking at safenwarm but they are just too expensive at the moment (new baby is draining the funds!)

And thirdly… I decided to buy a cheepo long john top for about £4 from Go Outdoors to see how well it would cope with the colder weather, it works a dream, makes a mockery of any more expensive technical wear I’ve had before, I just look like my grandad / a hillbilly in it, but as its under my jacket no one needs to know…apart from you guys!

FZS600 Fazer / tire pressures...
« on: 21 August 2012, 04:25:34 pm »
what do people run front and back?

I've just put some more air in front and back, up to the recommended 32/36 front to back. Feels a lot more direct. Is the back too high for when it gets warm on the motorway?

Comments appreciated,

Cheers,

Phil

FZS600 Fazer / Upshifts
« on: 19 August 2012, 04:29:29 pm »
Hi guys,

Just a quick question, I've heard conflicting advise regarding up shifting, the main difference in the shifts being with or without clutch. I've been trying with clutch, which is fine when riding sedately but try and do it when going quick and the engine revs as I can't shut the throttle quick enough...

Without clutch it seems to shift a lot smoother, no over-revving of the engine and doesn't give any alarming clunking sounds, suppose its just like a slower version of an electronic shifting device!

What do you all do? and should I be avoiding any particular technique? Thanks

FZS600 Fazer / Front Brakes
« on: 18 August 2012, 01:44:15 pm »
Hi,

I've noticed that the front brakes have quite a bit of travel on them. Not impressed with the brakes really, so I'm guessing the pads need changing so I thought I'd check the pads (all ok so far) but for some reason, when slackening off the brake calliper bolts I put the socket on the bolt holding the brake hose banjo, I know I'm an idiot!  :'(

I only slackened it a small bit before I looked at what I was doing, tightened it back up and it seems fine (small amount of fluid leaked out, but level is fine). So first question is, is it likely that any air has got into the system and do I need to change / top up the fluid?

Second question is, do the pads have wear indicators on them? By the looks of the ones I've seen on wemoto here they have groves in them, well the ones on mine have no groves but look to still have a bit of depth left in them, are they past their useful life?

Thanks in advance for all the comments, even the ones calling me a dunce!

FZS600 Fazer / rattle from clutch in neutral
« on: 16 August 2012, 08:35:31 pm »
Hi guys

I got back from a bit of a run out this eve and noticed when I knocked it into neutral and let the lever out there was a rattle. Pull the lever back in and it stops.

It doesn't seem to do it when gears Srebrenica engaged...

Is it anything serious? Please say it isn't!

General / Bought it!!
« on: 01 August 2012, 09:23:27 pm »
Finally got sorted!

Bought this tonight, well chuffed, only thing is, I need to pass my test! So the old man is taking it back to his while I wait for my test date next week.

Itchy feet, and palms, want to get on the road! Will no doubt post more over the coming weeks...

Is it hard to change the ignition barrel? Its not nackered just requires a certain knack to do it, which I will probably learn but it might be worth swapping out...

General / Ramping it up!
« on: 01 August 2012, 11:46:23 am »
Hi guys,

Quick question regarding the use of ramps…
I’m most likely going to be buying a bike tonight after a fairly long search and my idea all along has been to also buy a ramp from ebay and use this to get the bike into my back garden, up probably 4 steps totalling probably about 3.5 foot with a ramp of 2.1 meters long, but with the day of trying this getting pretty close I thought I’d ask to tap into your collectively vast knowledge!
A few questions, does anyone currently do this?
How difficult is it going to be?
Should I be looking at a longer ramp or will the gradient be ok?
What is the best method? i.e. walking at the side of it (not really an option for me as the steps aren’t wide enough) or riding it up with something to rest your feet on should you need to stop / touch down.
Do you think it will be possible to do on my own?
I was thinking about putting something into the ground at the base of the ramp for it to rest against so it doesn’t slip when I ride up it, do you think I need anything more than that?
And finally (!) will two planks be enough to put down at the sides (one each side) of the ramp for feet to be put on if I need to pause / take it slow while going up the ramp? Or should I be looking at something sturdier?
Thanks in advance,
philshaq

General / Mod 2 Test Tip - Gears
« on: 15 July 2012, 06:59:19 pm »
Hi guys,

Got my MOD 2 test on Tuesday this week, I've been learning on an ER6n, which  has a really long (bordering on ridiculous) throw from 3rd down to 2nd and 2nd to 1st, I've got used to it but the method I use takes a little longer hence my question;

Example of a 40mph zone, travelling along in 6th gear, approaching a junction / red light.

Is it acceptable to down-shift before breaking if approaching a junction / sequential change down a couple of gears and then just knock it down the gears from say 4th to first without engaging the clutch if you know you have to stop. (does that make sense!?)

The alternative is to use a lower gear (4th / 5th) to enable me to have enough time to get down through the gears sequentially while using the engine braking.

(by sequential I mean - down a gear - engage clutch to bite point - down a gear - engage to bite point - etc as opposed to clutch in, down all gears while coasting up to the stopping point with the clutch disengaged)

I'm pretty much confident of everything else, and would be 100% happy if I had a better gear box! but its too close to my test date to swap the bike really...

Thanks in advance for all the helpful / piss taking responses to my clearly green riding skills!!

FZS600 Fazer / Too good to be true?! First bike a'hoy!
« on: 08 July 2012, 08:57:34 pm »
Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, had my eye on a fazer for my first bike and as my MOD2 test is coming up in the next couple of weeks I'm startin to have a good look around.

I'm looking for something that won't need a huge amount doing to it, I have the experience to fix but not the time! And as I'm using for commuting I need it to be up and running right away.
I spotted this on ebay, looks like a bit of a bargain, stainless steel down pipes, average miles, nice belly pan and double bubble screen, there is a minor fly in the oil though...
He says it has cam chain rattle and he has rather helpfully added a vid on youtube of the noise. Could you kind folks share your Fazer knowledge and tell me if I'm stepping into something that I shouldn't be? It doesn't seem like a massive job to sort from what I've read, but I wouldn't want the chain to fail on the drive back home and be left with a nackered engine.
It does seem cheap compared to what FZS600's tend to go for, is there anything else I should be looking out for if I go and view?
Thanks in advance guys.
