FZS600 Fazer / removing fork caps... when not on bike?
« on: 17 July 2016, 11:45:45 am »
I'm trying to service a set of forks and need to remove the top caps.

I know the easiest way to do this is when they are clamped to the bike, but these are not and I really don't want to have to take the forks off my bike just to clamp these on. Unfortunately this seems like the inevitable solution.

Is there another way of gripping the stanchions? When they are not on the bike?

FZS600 Fazer / brake discs - handed?
« on: 05 July 2016, 01:26:07 pm »
I have a set of OEM front discs to go on my 2000 FZS600.

Are they handed? They look a bit the same to me?!

FZS600 Fazer / Carb balancing gauges - Cheeky borrow?
« on: 29 June 2016, 03:41:15 pm »
Hi All,

Has anyone (anywhere near NW London) got a set of carb balancing gauges I could borrow?

I'd rather buy someone on here a handful of beers and borrow theirs, than spend on a set that I'll rarely use. I'll only need it over weekend.

Cheers! :)

FZS600 Fazer / fork component interchangeability?!
« on: 22 June 2016, 02:30:44 pm »
My front fork has developed a bit or a knock or play, it's hard to describe.

Anyway, I've picked up another set of forks to switch them over.

The knackered set on my bike have preload adjusters
The older pair I've just got don't have preload adjusters (older?).

Is it possible to swap the preload adjusters over to the good fork? Or are a lot of the internals different?

Thank you,

Brett

FZS600 Fazer / indicator change - connectors?
« on: 21 June 2016, 07:19:52 am »
Someone has proper driven into my motorbike. No massive problem in itself as my bike is a deliberately tatty London bike living on the street.

Fortunately the lady that did it left a nite offering to pay for any damage (there must have been witnesses)

The side stand is bent and the rear left indicator broken.

I assume the indicators are interchangeable between years, but the wire connectors are probably different. Mine is a 2000, which other years would fit it? As I can't find a cheapo 2000 one.

Thanks!

FZS600 Fazer / Fork play.
« on: 31 May 2016, 12:10:06 am »
My bike has developed a slight 'knock' or looseness in the front fork.

I'm pretty sure it's not the headset as when I put on the front brake and rock backwards and forwards I can't replicate it. It's just when riding and over bumps. Is it likely to be worn bushes?

I've never had a fork apart before. What part is likely to be knackered and what other spares should I get?

Thanks,

General / Europe touring suggestions? Santander to...
« on: 25 April 2016, 02:40:51 pm »
Hi All,

I'm well excited and planning a roadtrip on my FZS600. I'm keen to hear any of your hints and tips or must see suggestions! Or even to hear about any trips you've done. I've done a few tours of central Europe but this is my first time on this route.

The plan is to take the ferry to Santander. Then spend 8 days going to Barcelona, travel the French coast, Italy, Austria then back home through Germany.

I'm aiming to do 4-6hrs riding per day (do-able?)
Do I bother seeing the Pyrenees or just see the Alps?
Can you recommend any roads?
What should I see along the way? Anywhere worth spending longer than a day?
What would be a good route through the Alps? I was thinking of seeing Hitlers eagles nest through Austria.
Germany - I fancy doing a lap of the Nurnbergring, Can I just turn up?

So excited!

Thanks in advance,

Brett

FZS600 Fazer / centre stand?
« on: 15 April 2016, 10:15:46 am »
Someone mention on here about a knocking noise and someone said look at the centre stand. So I had a look at mine out of interest...

It's touching the left foot peg and gear linkage!!!

Well I don't like that! isn't there meant to be a rubber bit on the other side by exhaust. I can't work out how this is meant to be but the stand is nowhere near the exhaust on the right side?! What's going on here then?

FZS600 Fazer / Improving life of spark plug number 3?
« on: 12 April 2016, 06:08:41 pm »
Hi all,

Unfortunately my bike is subject to on street parking, all year round and is exposed to weather. I leave her on the sidestand as she periodically gets knocked over regardless of which stand I use and at least on the sidestand she has less distance to fall, and gets less damage.

As a result of being on the side stand, the rain inevitably sits around spark plug number 3. Brown rust emerges from around the ceramic/white bit, the shiny metal bit gets all corroded and pitted and my bike then misfires at high revs and runs lumpy as hell.

I now replace spark plug 3 every six months!! This time with a liberal coating of red rubber grease. She now runs right as rain (bad pun :rollin).

What can I do to improve the life of spark plug 3? I've used a bike cover through winter but these don't last very long.  :(

FZS600 Fazer / testing fuel light
« on: 22 March 2016, 12:13:39 pm »
Hi all,

I went out for a whirl on the bike last night. The tank was pretty empty, then I realised I've not seen the fuel light come on in ages, then I started getting paranoid about the dodgy connector under the tank.

Is there a way to test the fuel light without running the tank to empty?
The gauge I working fine, does the light work off the gauge or off a separate sensor in the tank? (if that makes sense)

Thank you,

Brett

FZS600 Fazer / top box broken into. :-(
« on: 29 January 2016, 11:59:11 am »
What kind of a twunt breaks into your top box?

A bit gutted... My bike lives on the street in a motorcycle bay. I came out of my flat yesterday and find my 45L givi top box sat in the middle of the road. It had been pried from my bike, the lock knackered and the latch AND both hinges smashed. It's now completely destroyed.

It was empty, but now I'm feeling a bit stupid for leaving it on the bike. I just assumed that nobody leaves anything of value outside longterm, so no one would bother with it. Big mistake. :-( I should have removed it or atleast left it unlocked.

Anyone selling a big givi box they no longer want?

FZS600 Fazer / Reupholstered seat, underseat storage?!
« on: 21 January 2016, 12:37:31 am »
Well this evening I've mainly been reupholstering my seat. As the old cover was split, uncomfortable and filled with water.

I think it's come out pretty good  :)

I was wondering what, if anything, people put under that rubber strap?
My tool kit goes in the little compartment behind the seat.
Am I missing something? Puncture kit?
What came as standard from the factory?

So many questions?

What 'emergency', breakdown, general stuff do you guys carry?

For me it's toolkit, chain lube, zipties and carry straps. That's it.

FZS600 Fazer / is this rear caliper salvageable?
« on: 29 December 2015, 01:43:15 pm »
My rear brake seizes every winter, but frees up with use. I should have serviced it ages ago, but finally took it off today.

One piston moves with force, the other is stuck. I could probably free things up with penetrating oil, a soak and a clean but am I wasting my time?

Is it a case of "new seals, it'll be fine" or "bin it and get a new one"?

I would obviously prefer to fix it on the cheap, but is it a false economy?

Cheers,

Brett

FZS600 Fazer / cleaning front brake disc bobbins / rivets?
« on: 03 November 2015, 12:37:59 pm »
My front brake has a slight pulse at low speeds. The surface has no high spots (measured with a vernier while rotating the front wheel). As I've read that the disc is semi-floating, I thought I might be able to remedy the problem by cleaning the disc bobbins/rivets to allow the disc to float. At the moment everything is solid and I'm assuming the disc has a wobble.

I've seen videos on youtube of people cleaning the bobbins by putting a nut and bolt through the hole and using a socket to rotate them while giving a good application of brake cleaner. But mine don't have a hole in the middle?!

Has anyone done any cleaning of the rivets? Is there another way to rotate them or is it a spray and toothbrush job?

Wot you reckon?

FZS600 Fazer / help!!! where did this bit come from?
« on: 06 September 2015, 08:40:28 am »
Hi all,

I just split my engine to rebuild the gearbox. I just found this bit on the floor and luckily also the ball bearing.

Where is it from? I can't see it in the manual?!

Thank you!

I'm going to split my engine case to replace the gearbox.

What is the best readily available sealant to reseal it?

Thank you!

FZS600 Fazer / 2nd gear stutter.
« on: 11 August 2015, 08:06:45 pm »
Hi All,

I would appreciate your thoughts and inputs on this...

So my bike has been running rough since it came out of storage over winter.  :'( It's now had a 'no expense spared' service and check over to get it running smoothly without stuttering or misfiring. Now combustion-wise everything is running sweet!!!! but....

The bike is stuttering in 2nd gear. Like its jumping teeth?!  :'( All other gears are fine and it changes gear no problem, but if I give it any throttle in 2nd it really stutters and the revs jump quite violently as it accelerates. No noises, clunks or whirring noises just a violent stutter.

I'm now pretty confident it has a mechanical gearbox fault  :eek (assuming there are no electrics or sensors in the gearbox that would cut the engine intermittently)

What is likely to be the problem? and can I do any sort of diagnostics before taking the bike apart? It would be nice to have an idea of what I am looking for and parts I need to source before taking the bike apart.

I had the engine out before for a top end rebuild and am 50/50 if I just buy a replacement engine (£150) or do a gearbox rebuild? What do you think?

Cheers,

Brett

Hi All,

I seem to have fixed a misfire on my bike but it now has a VIOLENT stutter during full throttle in 1st and 2nd but not in any of the other gears? What could do that? It only stutters in the wheelie/power zone. Fine on motorway at full chat and fine at low rev's.
It's like the whole bike shuts down.

It used to misfire and drop from 4 to 3 cylinders which made the bike change in power 75%/100%. I seemed to fixed that by changing the spark plug caps, spark plugs and cleaning the carbs. But now it stutters between 0%/100% power when on full throttle, full torque in 1st and 2nd gear.

some details:
2001 FZS600, 36,000miles
Had new rectifier and regulator 18mths ago
New spark plug caps
Carbs fully stripped and cleaned and in good order
Scorpion exhaust fitted (has ran fine for the last 3years)
K&N filer (a bit old but apparently good for 50,000miles?)
Coil resistances are fine.
Spark plugs were new 18months ago and I just replaced number 3
recent oil and filter change.
Carb/engine rubbers are in good condition - no holes

Battery seems to drain if sat for over 1 month. Fully charging it doesn't seem to change the problem.

No obvious fuelling restrictions, although I've not looked too closely at the filters as it runs fine at full chat in 3rd gear and up?!

Any suggestions greatly received? Or could you suggest a goo garage that is handy with Fazers in London?

thank you!

Brett
