A similar thing has happened to me, though the hole is smaller at the moment. I have also go a little one on the way (5 weeks to go now) so need some downpipes within the next couple of months. Along with chain and sprockets... and valve clearances... and brake seals... and carb sync. The list goes on.


Has anyone used the Delkevic headers? I only ask as them seem to come in loads of parts, with spring clips for the header/collector box joints (at least according to their website). I just wonder about the sealing of all these extra joints.

Good luck with the small person!! I've just taken delivery of std stainless set from Sandy Bike Spares.  Looking like I'll have to use the knackered rusted fasteners mind.

HAHA!  I actually had a mild panic attack at one point as the weight of down pipes was hanging on said studs at a jaunty angle.  An old doc martin boot proved sufficient support while i gently eased the pipes out.  I say gently, the removal process involved occasional profanities and grunting.

Oooooo thanks for the offer kind sir. While the downpipes are off I may as well do a coolant change/flush. The flexible hoses are OK, there's one steel pipe which is more rust than metal.

Yeah found a set of stainless steel downpipes for £175 on Sandy bike spares.  Took exhaust off tonight and you're right, there's always something, the coolant pipework leaves a little bit to be desired. Good luck with forks!

After a somewhat lengthy absence from my bike (caused by arrival of a small person) I finally carved out some free time to have a blast on the Fazer only to see/hear that the much maligned exhaust system has a hole in it. Time for stainless steel upgrade me thinks.

Firstly Happy Easter to you all  :D


Went out for a spin yesterday happy and came home sad.  3k done on my Fazer since i passed my test (bike now totalling 21k) and it has developed this large rough spot below 3k rpm. 


Setting off from standing or slow riding gives the bike this awful rough, almost grinding feel up to 3k rpm where it smooths out.  It seems to have appeared on various threads before.  This bike has a receipt from previous life for dealing with similar problem. 


Spark plugs, leads etc i will check, might be within my capability to do some basic carb checks.  These seem to be common things to look at but i welcome other pointers.


Also, don't suppose anyone knows where in the Morecambe/Lancaster area this sort of thing can be looked at?  Bike garages somewhat sparse!!

I've tried allsorts of screens. I'm 6'1" tall and tried touring screens (very noisy unless your sub 50mph)
Standard screens (not too bad)
D/B screens (pretty good)
Currently running a chopped down screen on the fz1, and it's great at directing the wind somewhere in the middle of my chest, nice and quiet though. No doubt it would be a bit nippy in the winter though!


Interesting.  Sorry to ask a bit of daft question what screen did you chop down and how did you do it?   :)

I'm a fairly tall rider 6ft 3. My screen seems to direct the airflow right to the center of my helmet. Will a double bubble screen improve this for me? Or any other suggestions?


Yeah i'm a 6ft 4 lump and have similar issues!  Haven't seen anything myself (which doesn't help you mind!) but interested to see what other folk have to offer.

Out again today for a sedate run to Raceways in Fleetwood, nice bendy road from Glasson Dock with a bit more gearbox control and less brake, far more rewarding!!


Although i think last weeks adventure seems to have caused a bit of a fault  :'(

Yeah I've found the bike "jumping" a little bit on rough surfaces which has effected my roundabout or other cornering manoeuvres.  I've messed up a few but it just gives you another excuse to stay out a bit longer to practice  :D

One thing the weekend did teach me is leaning the bike a little bit more, but that's just coming with confidence and experience.  That may help roundabout manoeuvres but I will bow to more experienced views on that.

Got back yesterday after stonking 3 day trek and 350miles enjoyed on my first and only bike, the humble Fazer!

Morecambe to Scarborough via Thirsk.  Scarborough to Keswick via Alston (that was a twitchy bum route in high wind and p*ss poor visibility).  Then a mince around the lakes via Devils bridge (it would be rude not to) and Sedbergh. 

Still getting used to riding after 10months since passing test and what i found myself doing on the twisty and long-ish bits was staying in 4th.  The engine and rev combination was perfect to give immediate access to the power band as well as suiting a variety of different slower road conditions.  Of course i changed up and down for obvious reasons, but 4th for me was ideal for enjoying the finest rural roads on offer. 

Is this good practice or reflection on the wide ranging Fazer gearbox?

If the cable is too tight it's the same as riding with the clucth lever slightly pulled in so it'll slip


My contribution to this thread is relatively feeble but noticed my clutch slips occasionally with a bit of heavy wrist action.  Mate of mine bit of a bike nut suggested this solution which i might try on the basis of relative simplicity!!

Good point there.  Due a ride out over the weekend so i'll see how it fares.

No its just there is more of a kind of a wet look going on, one ride and the stuff on the engine will be gone in a cloud of smelly smoke (which I like )

It'll burn off the exhaust as i smoked out my garage but engine block pretty much as picture.

Fazer FZS is my first big bike too after passing my test last year.  Found 1st to 2nd a very clunky experience but slowly refined the change by changing 'quickly'.  It seemed to work for me.


Bike excellent in pretty much 3rd all the way to 6th although a horror on the motorway.  Other than that i'm a 6ft 4" lump and i've literally hours of pleasurable & comfortable riding.

Now that looks clean  :thumbup ... Isnt acf50 meant to be put on a bike and left there to keep out the weather? never pictured it as a cleaner..


You're absolutely right but i was distraught after seeing it after being left sat for so long that i went i bit OTT in ensuring minimal risk of future moisture ingress  :)


Cleaned her up first then used the ACF50 as a sort of polish.

OK - over the harsh unforgiving wet as hell winter, i didn't exactly lavish my Fazer with a huge amount of attention.  Sometime in February when it stopped raining, i dragged the old girl out (the bike) and noticed that the rear sprocket, chain, crash bar fixings, callipers, exhaust, cylinder head, front forks and various other bits all looked rather tired. Just realised i have pretty much described ALL of the bike there   :lol


Last weekend i went mad with a bottle of ACF 50 and have to say the results were ruddy marvellous.  Obviously i didn't use on the brakes and understanding that its not a polish, i was pleased to see the results and i seep knowing that it is protected from the merest hint of moisture!


Looking forward to taking her out from Morecambe to Whitby this weekend!
