General / Throw over Panniers
« on: 04 March 2015, 01:30:25 pm »
as the name suggests I'm looking at buying some throw over panniers for a weekend away to Wales in May.
now really stupid question.. how do you secure them to your bike? is it really just throw them over and the weight holds them in place?

my Landlady had a set & I thought that they would have secured under the seat and how do you stop them "flapping a bout"?

or am I just been dense?

General / Another new bike thread ... kinda...
« on: 06 February 2015, 12:01:51 pm »
ok so all this talk of new bikes has me thinking that maybe I would like to change my bike, at the moment its just a thought & nothing concrete yet but if I were to swap my bike I like the idea of a triumph sprint st 1050. No logical reason other than I use my bike mainly for commuting 60 odd miles a day plus ride home to Falmouth at weekends mainly dry weather riding plus I got a couple of Rallies this year. I've not test riden one yet and as I say everything is just thinking bout it...

my question's are these,
a) where is the best place to sell my Foxeye 600 (02 plate) bout 17k miles for my best advantage. I know trade in against a dealer bike I would loose out and would be a last resort.
so ebay or auto trader or on here?

b) MOT due in June so I would have it MOT'd prior to selling it but what about tyre state, as mine are just starting to square off a little and if I were keeping it i would change them May time but if i don't how much would buyers expect to knock off etc.
c) Whats it really worth?
this bike is all box standard with the exception of crash bars added by original owner (I'm 3rd) & I would say for its age is in good nick. not pristine as it has some very light scrathes on tank where tank bag been on & off ( will post some pictures of it when i take it out of its cover next week if that helps)
I know this may seem basic but other bikes I have sold in past were sub £300 mark & sold to mates as rag bikes & my F650 was part ex'd against a car!!
and no having 2nd bike is not an option.

Any advice from the wealth of knowledge on here much appreciated.

General / Patches
« on: 16 September 2014, 08:46:45 am »
in another thread a comment was raised that has me wondering how many patched members (back or side) are on the forum?!

I've recently joined a side patch club and our rules are fairly basic when it comes to bikes, basically you must own & be able to ride a bike & said bike must be able to maintain motorway speeds, but i know other clubs can be fairly strict with the rules for what bike you can have!

General / Winter Gloves
« on: 09 September 2014, 03:08:41 pm »
having just read the topic of heated grips was thinking maybe time i got some new winter gloves before I think about heated grips or muffs.

at the minute i'm using Akito Magnum gloves that I have had for nearly 20 years. i wear them all year round as i prefer the protected feeling even when riding in summer. but i dont think these gloves gonna hold over another winter so was wondering if any advice out there for a replacement pair...

General / Lights out 4th August - Portsdown Hill Portsmouth
« on: 28 July 2014, 08:44:48 am »
Don't know if you are aware Monday 4th August 2014 is 100 years since the start of  World War 1
to comemorate the nation is been urged to turn off your lights and light a single candle between 10 - 11pm
Hampshire Branch of Royal British Leigion Riders Branch are meeting up on Portsdown Hill (by Micks Burger wagon) and lining their bikes up facing out towards the sea.
at 10pm we will revout engines on full beam then cut them. we will then observe a 2 minutes silence before lighting our candles for the hour.
then i believe is a ride down to southsea past the memorial

this isn't just for ol' n bold... any bikers who wish to show there marks of respect more than welcome. and don't feel you have to stay the whole hour or do the ride past.
I'll be there with some old shipmates and some meeting up with new oppo's

but if your not in Portsmouth area why not look to see what local is going on or just in your own home??

Lest we Forget!!

General / MPG ... again!!
« on: 01 July 2014, 02:21:49 pm »
I ised my bike all last week and just done the rough calculation & I worked out i did approx 770 miles & it cost me £77 @ £1.32 litre thats 58 litre (13 gallons) so I reckon I was getting 58-59 miles to the gallon
is that good/bout average/bad ..
i know you have to look at riding style speed etc  so my journeys were Falmouth to Portsmouth 240 mile dual carriage way A roads & Motorway Sunday & Friday (just over 4hours each)
commute Portsmouth to Basingstoke 32 miles each way twice a day monday to thursday & once going up on Friday morning (40/45mins) on A3 Dual carriage way then A/B roads

General / Bloody Weather!!
« on: 13 February 2014, 10:10:45 am »
Sorry if this has been mentioned recently but getting fed up of this weather now.. Glad to go back to Afghan for a break!!

I'm working away all week and Mrs has just phoned to let me know that the high winds in Cornwall have blown kids trampoline into the trees at the bottom of the garden, & "oh by the way love your bikes been blown over and because it's heavy & peeing down here I cant lift it what do i do!!!"

as it happens I'm home tonight but wont get there till gone 10pm,  was wondering what damage (apart from paintwork, panels etc) will have been done to my bike having been left on its side for 24 hours?

I've not run it since October and left it with bout 1/4 tank of petrol in... guessing that will be ok as it will just evaporate away, but hadn.t drained oil or disconnectted battery as that was flat any way!!

any advise welcome

General / New / replacement Mobile Phone
« on: 15 October 2013, 03:33:23 pm »
I know this has been discussed in the past but any advice be great before I go & see the people in Phones4u / carphone wharehouse.

I've currently got a Nokia C1 phone on a monthly contract on Orange (EE). its over 2 years old & getting near the end of its life.
I dont want a smart phone really as i like the buttons rather than touch screen.

apart from a very early motorola have always had Nokia's.
must have's (apart from phone & text)
bluetooth so I can use handsfree kit
if i can get one that connects to t'interweb for facebook etc good!
Camera (doesn't have to have amazing graphics as this feature is more of taking pictures in emergeny)
not worried bout having small screen as really use it as a phone & texting

any advice?

General / Tax Discs
« on: 27 February 2013, 02:43:33 pm »
as someone just pointed out on another thread "where do you put parking tickets on a motorbike" I was wondering what the stance is for displaying a valid tax disc?

currently my bike does not have a tax disc holder (bike SORN'd anyway) but when the time comes to re tax it whats the best way of displaying tax disc ... or in fact do i need to as long as I have it on my person if I were to be stopped? (was thinking tape it in a plastic bag to underside of the seat!)

General / Car problem
« on: 09 January 2013, 11:37:21 am »
Mrs Robbie sends me text saying that her car wouldn't start this morning so had to use her mums car, can I ring her to help
so been the dutiful husband rang her and asked what is wrong with it
"Dunno, it wont start! I turn the key and it just goes tintintintink!"

I work 240 miles away n she is going "tintintintink" down the phone to me, I said "go out to the car so I can at least hear it!"
"oh thats at home I've gone round to my mates for a coffee what do you think is wrong with it?" I get told
she said that she going to call in the garage on way home, which is 250 yds up the road and explain the noise to them!

it's a '98 toyota picnic with 170k on the clock that cost me £900 2 years ago so dont wanna be paying out loads to get it fixed!, I'm thinking its the starter motor if it anything else I'll see what other cars are out there atm get it started this weekend then drive to look at them & if we see sommat then PX theren then if not i'll tow it with my car few miles from home then call AA lol
