FZS600 Fazer / Re: Vibration when slowing down
« on: 21 July 2013, 11:24:59 pm »
Many thanks! That explains the 70mph slight vibration! I've re-lubed the chain today and 're checked and altered the chain tension again. We'll see what happens!

FZS600 Fazer / Vibration when slowing down
« on: 21 July 2013, 12:22:09 pm »
Hi all, I've just returned from a trip to France on my 1999 FZS600, and it performed faultlessly over 800 miles of great riding. It didn't even use a drop of oil!
The only problem if any is this:
Following new tyres being fitted before I went I felt the bars were slightly off straight so I adjusted the rear alignment accordingly, all great! I only rode it 8 miles from my mates house back home and checked the chain, and it was too tight following our alignment altering. I re did it all and it was fine.
BUT: I've noticed that when slowing down, especially at lower revs with no throttle, I seem to get some vibration through the bike. It also seems to vibrate at around 70mph but clears at 75 to 80 which I think it may have always done though.
Has anyone got any ideas on this? The chain is well lubed and seems free enough on the links, and I've checked the sprocket nuts for tightness too.
Just a note too: all of you check your throttle position sensor! It's easy to do and made a vast difference to low speed riding and low down acceleration.
Many thanks!

All sorted!!! Traced it to a  wire right where the loom passes over the frame beneath the tank.
The tank had been pressing on the loom obviously for ages causing it to short out!
A couple of hours work and a bit of luck finding it and all working A1 again.

Many thanks! I'd planned on disconnecting the sensor first and seeing if the problem persists, just a case of trial and error.
I guess we post on here just hoping someone says ' ahh yes I had the same problem it was this '!!!

Many thanks.
I should have said that the fan works when I replace the fuse.
I can turn it on and off endlessly with my over ride switch and the fuse doesn't blow.
Then it seems, after a ride, maybe either the temperature affecting the fan switch or the motor windings, the fuse blows. Although I have not checked to see if it's blown yet prior to trying the fan via the over ride switch.

FZS600 Fazer / Fan fuse blowing
« on: 06 May 2013, 01:23:51 am »
Hi all,

Just been out for a great 225 miles around north Wales today and although the bike performed flawlessly I do have a slight recurring problem.
Once again the fan fuse has blown, although I doubt the engine got hot enough to turn it on as I was never stuck in traffic at all.
This has happened before, so I fitted a simple switch to over-ride the sensor just in case.
Now I'm not sure if its the sensor breaking down to earth ( I know its switching a positive to the motor ), or if it's the motor itself.
Has anyone else had a fan fuse problem on a 600 ?
Many thanks, your input would be most appreciated,
Keith.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Advice needed on cam chain

Hi, mines rattly when cold but it gets better when it warms up.
Markaboot, I'm no expert in these things so could you explain to me what rolling it backwards with the plugs out in 5th does please?!
If it's some possible magical cure I'll try it, but I thought it was bad to rotate the engine in anything other than its usual forward rotation?
Many thanks, Keith.

« on: 29 April 2013, 03:07:55 pm »
Hi,
My 99 FZS600 is exactly the same. 1st to 2nd at anything above 5k sounds like my wife engaging reverse gear!! It's normal for these apparently, the gearbox is just a bit rough unfortunately on these. I did oil change, clutch cable change, clean out the cable to pushrod actuator, reset and tension all to correct settings and it still does it! As the other guy said, short shift 1st to 2nd every time then give it some beans from then on!!!

I'm a newbie, and I live just up the road near Wolverhampton. I'll do my best to be there.!

I'll sleep better now thanks. I hate niggling things like this!

Have you changed the air filter at all, may be due for a replacement?

Also, next time you get the bike warm put it on the centre stand and let the bike tick over for a while and keep an eye on the coolant expansion tank, you can see it looking under the rear wheel arch on the right hand side, and see if it fills up and boils at all.
You may have a clogged up system, which then sends boiling coolant to the expansion tank then comes out of the overflow pipe.
Once the bike gets cool again it will suck the fluid back into the system then you'll notice a dropped level in the expansion tank.
If it does do this you'll need to do a radiator flush, i normally leave it in for 2 or 3 days so it gets hot/cold/hot/cold and it gives it a thorough clean.
Hi, I changed the air filter in october, and the coolant level in the expansion tank, aswell as the filler neck under the fuel tank, are both spot on what they should be. Seems weird that it waited til I was standing in the garage hours later before it decided to drain out!!!

12
Cheers for your help! I'll hope it's that and nothing else! I knew I should only take it out when it's 20 degrees or above!!!

13
That's the one! Is that just condensation because I've ridden it on a cold day, got it home and parked it up in a freezing garage do you think?

14
Not sure to be honest, it is the first ride it's been on since changing the coolant though. I should have checked prior to soaking it up! It was definitely water though, not fuel!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Does anyone else like unpainted engine fins?

You've got me tempted to sand all the bloody fins now, just to see what it looks like on a silver bike!

Hi all, after a ride of 50 miles or so today, and a good 6 hrs after getting home, I'm in the garage and hear a ' trickle '. There appears a small puddle on the left of the centre stand, which came from an overflow pipe above. It seems to go onto a splitter, then into a plastic box behind the carbs underneath the battery tray area. Is there any reason for this, and is it normal? I changed the coolant last week, but the levels are spot on tonight after the first ride in  about a month.
Can anyone put my mind at rest?!
Thanks, Keith.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Bloomin heck these things don't hang about!
« on: 02 February 2013, 10:52:14 pm »
Im amazed by this bike, I swear I'll never sell it, it's in the family for good!
That's exactly how I feel. Who knew when I bought it 9 years ago as a kind of stop gap bike that I'd still have it today, and that today's bikes would be no better. I've ridden the Tuono V4, VFR1200, Z1000SX, Multistrada, etc and good as some of them are, better made, higher quality, faster, better handling, with new tech like traction control and ABS, there's something so right about the Fazer. Nothing has the right blend of usability, performance and charisma to make me give it up.
Exactly! I've been riding with mate since I passed my test, him on his old suzuki gs550, and all along he keeps saying " wait til I get the 900 diversion back on the road after the winter, it's a torque monster, I'll show you all about torque then! ". Well today he did, and we did a 40mph to ' a quick speed !' up a hill, in top gear for both of us, and the trusty 600 Fazer matched him all the way! Smug mode enabled!

I love my Fazer! I learnt on what I thought was a quick bike ( a suzuki gladius 650 ) but the Fazer is incredible! With a sports exhaust it seems slightly down on low end grunt, but once you wind it up to 5 to 6 thousand rpm it pulls like a train! Im amazed by this bike, I swear I'll never sell it, it's in the family for good!

I have braided hoses on it anyway. The braking at the moment is smooth, solid, and dependable, but the pads are low! I think I'm going to go for ebc pads HH!
And in answer to the comment about me being a fair weather rider, you're right! I've not been out on it much since I passed my test in October!!!

Hi, My silver Fazer 600 1999 has the fins painted black, and on that colour I prefer it.
On a black bike I think the silver fins look cool, the colour of the bike alters how you look at things.

FZS600 Fazer / Brakes!
« on: 29 January 2013, 10:02:31 pm »
Hi all, I'm new to the forum, new to the Fazer, and new to motorcycling full stop!
Could anyone suggest brake pads for the fazer 600 1999, I use the bike for mainly dry weekend rides, although I'm off to France on it in July.
I'm dubious about cheap pads and don't know what was fitted as standard, GG or HH. But can cheap pads really be that bad, I don't know?!
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks fellow Fazer owners.
Keith.
