Stretching the fuel needle valve o-ring on the pliers to show the problem a little better.

Should be fine so long as it isn’t leaking. Done similar in the past.

Thread hijack alert to emphasise the o-ring issue.

Finally got round to pulling the carbs on my FZS1000 due to a slight low down misfire and a running a bit ‘wooly’ low down. They were very clean internally (almost perfect) but the original o-rings were not in good condition. The fuel valve o-rings were cracking and 2 snapped when trying to get them off. Main jet o-rings were rock hard and more like washers.

Back together today and instantly sounded better. Yet to test ride but for all the carb bike owners, consider doing these o-rings sooner rather than later. Thanks to unfazed for the sizes of replacement Viton type.

Have often considered a Tracer. Not without the standard Yamaha suspension inadequacies as I understand. Shock change and fork springs probably required.

Let us know how you get on and obviously we need pictures

Hi Glenn, I think you’d be better trying to split up your spares and sell them separately. I doubt you’ll get your desired amount as spares or repair regardless of the problem.

What fazersharp said :thumbup :thumbup

I have used E10 when I know it will be essentially all used in one day. But I would not leave it. I drained a mower last year that had sat for no more than one winter. The ‘fuel’ was disgusting and you could drain off over 50% water and ethanol mix. Carbs are more susceptible as pointed out.

Fazer carbs are 20 years old on my bike and been off once - to fit Ivan’s kit. Other than that it’s been good as gold 👍

I can t really comment since ive only ever ridden the fz6 s2, but i will throw into the mix that I would never have another carburated motorcycle, both from personal experoence and noting the many posts on here regarding carb problems with the fzs600. That alone makes the fz6 s2 a superior machine to the fzs600

I would suggest most carb issues are due to poor practice along with ethanol laced fuel. Fortunately I’ve had no problems but I do take precautions of filling up with E0 before parking up for winter. I’ve seen the damage ethanol causes in mowers / chainsaws. Saws get drained after each use if there’s fuel left.

Well done for sorting! I would never have expected it to be gearbox related.

I’d check from cold that all the exhaust header pipes get hot at the same rate. At least then you know you’re firing on all 4 and hopefully in the right order (dunno if it’s possible to get it wrong on these but we’ve all probably got the wrong lead to the wrong pot on something in the past). No air leak on your gauges?

Hopefully not too bad to sort.

I would also add that changing the seals is sometimes needed, even if they look ok.

Front blue spots on mine were sticking, cleaned them by popping pistons and into the seal grooves etc. A few months later they were sticking again. New seals and it was perfect. Didn’t appear to the naked eye that they’d expanded but new seals was the fix.

On the flip side, I’ve many times stuck the old seals back in on other machines and worked fine.

Happy with mine but I did the filing modification rather than a buying a new one. Also got Ivan’s slip on carb kit for info.

Have you checked the sprocket carrier bearing is OK? Are the wheels / tyres being dynamically balanced or static?

« on: 20 April 2023, 07:16:26 pm »
If you care about the bike it sounds a little premature to condemn it. Some basic continuity checks are in order. But I suppose if electrics aren’t your thing it can be frustrating. You could start by physically checking and cleaning associated connectors. Make sure the the earth points are clean. Or just sell it!

22 miles covered since autumn 2021 ☹️
Good news is a little trip to the continent planned for May so should do 2500 miles in a fortnight 😀

I only need it off to split the casings and change a bearing.

Just a quick split of the cases 😀. Hope it goes to plan!

If it’s a 600 Diversion I’d have a rethink unless you like vibration, carb icing and essentially gutless.

I think you just need some T5 bulbs. LEDs are nice and bright.

Additional LED spotlights would be a better addition. Low down mounting should help with pot hole identification

« on: 25 January 2023, 10:43:47 am »
I’ve had a few VFRs, probably preferred the later 750 over the 800 but not much in it. The bars can be sorted, I had small risers which helped but helibars and LSL straight var conversions were also available https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/195540016309?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=tWTqQr6SSOO&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=6r2EIYEFTdS&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

They’re definitely a well put together bike, mileage isn’t really a problem for them so I’d go for the best cosmetic condition with fairings etc. Suspension is better as standard than a thou so no huge money to spend there assuming shock is OK. Brakes are a bit more complicated to service with the linked system but no major drama. Just remembered, some had issues with the clocks internal PCB due to corrosion. Normally fixable with a  wire track and some lacquer.

yes, propper greasy spoon...Zoom in on the piccies of the mighty thou...Needs a good wash and polish  :eek :eek :eek

Your thoughts MR ROBBO. looking at a 03 VFR 800 on Saturday. low mileage at 8000. £3000....ever riden one ? good replacement for the mighty thou ?

VFR800 pre vtec are a nice machine but expect it to feel a little asthmatic compared with the thou. Low mileage so likely not had the exhaust sorted (rotting collector boxes although I have a feeling they may have changed to stainless on later ones). Also reg / rec charging issues are common. More weight on the wrists than with a Fazer for sure.
