FZS600 Fazer / Going to miss the site.
« on: 03 May 2016, 01:51:38 pm »
Well, after much soul searching, the Fazer is going.  It's quite hard to keep a 98 model in good nick when you don't have a garage and you need it for everyday commuting. :(

Moving over to a Versys 650, in nice bright orange.  Was always a Kwak man in the past (GPZ500, ER5,ZX6R, ZXR750) so it feels like going home. :)

Wishing you all the best for the future, and try not to overtake me too fast on my put-put twin! :lol

Hi,

As above.  Just bought kit from Busters - got DID chain & JTS sprockets for £70 quid, & new nut /washer from Wemoto.  Local workshop fitted for £25.

Bargain.

« on: 24 September 2015, 01:48:02 pm »
Well,  not today, but last Saturday.

Replaced the original chain & sprockets for nice new shiny ones (no clunking noises now!).  Oh, and had the new type sprocket nut fitted.  Old one was good and tight and hadn't damaged the thread though.

Should fess up.  It wasn't actually me who did it, but at only £25 for fitting by the workshop, it was a no brainer - would have had to buy a cahin tool, borrow a torque wrench and get sweary with the sprocket nut, wheras I rode in, went for brekkie in a local caff and came back  job done. :rollin

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Champion or NGK
« on: 17 August 2015, 12:48:12 pm »
Many years ago, an 'old school' car mechanic (i.e. one who knew a thing or two, not just having factory certs on how to plug test gear in!!) told me to use NGK plugs.  When I asked why, he simply said lots of ignition related faults could be cured simply by swapping Champion plugs for NGK ones, even if the Champion ones were new.

Now, I don't want to knock the quality of Champion products, and I use their oil filters with no probs.  But I always use NGKs and change them regularly and I have never had a plug problem...

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Speedo Drive - but not what you think
« on: 27 May 2015, 10:02:34 pm »
Thanks you guys for the photos and replies, it has been really useful info.

I have the drive, and I managed to get a NOS insert from fleabay for under £3 (don't think the seller new how much it was worth).

Fom the photos I think my wheel has the insert, or a copy of, from the thundercat to make the mechanical drive work.  It also seems to have the extra seal from same.
I now have enough to go on to get the proper clocks on.

....Then I can save up for some lovely street triple headlights..... :lol

FZS600 Fazer / Speedo Drive - but not what you think
« on: 26 May 2015, 02:19:37 pm »
I need the help of more knowledgeable fellow FOCer's out there.

My 99 boxeye has had by a previous owner has a 'streetfighter' modification, I assume due to a front ender.  It has a set of FZR clocks and normal mechanical speedo drive, and the obligatory useless in the dark dominator headlamps.  Oh, and the headlamp / clocks harness is a botched mess of a b***ers muddle involving connector strip and tape.  Needless to say I will be sorting this very soon.

Now I was going to get the front end back to almost standard, so I have a set of correct clocks, mounting hardware etc., Fazer speedo drive and insert, however looking into the standard headlight, and seeing a mates Triumph which has had speed triple headlights fitted gave me the idea of streetfightering it the correct way, so I am on the lookout for a set of headlights.

However, after the speedo drive gave out, I fitted a TDM850 one (same 17mm spindle size), clocks all working again.  But this is where I need you good guys for a bit of help.  The mechanical drive is driven by two tabs from a ring in the wheel, like the Thundercat, so this will have to come out - but looking at Fazer parts list drawings I don't see a ring to mate with the 2 tabs on the ceramic insert.

Does anyone have a photo of this side of the wheel hub from working on the bike, or know how the speedo drive is meant to fit?  I don't really want to buy a new wheel if I don't have to.

Thanks in advance.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Brake Caliper Pistons
« on: 02 May 2015, 11:26:18 am »
Hi,

My rear was in a similar state. Popped out the pistons, cleaned first with scotchbrite.  When cleaned, then polished with autosol (trick seen on youtube) then a final clean off with brake cleaner so no polish left on.
They then looked brand new.

Took out the seals and scraped the white crystal stuff you always get eventually.  Red grease on piston hen slid back in, once bled the back brake can now actually be used without sticking on.

My advice would be to go for it, it will be a bit more tricky for the front, but just take the time it needs and be careful and your brakes will be good as new.

« on: 02 May 2015, 09:39:50 am »
Well I haven't done much, just ued it for going to  work on.
A previous owner did the mods  - naff dommy headlighs, and (as I presume a minor front ender) changed the clocks for FZR600 ones, along with a sutable cable drive for the speedo.

Now if dommy headlights weren't the mot useless headlights you can buy (trust me winter in E Yorks is no fun with them) and the modder hadn't  used terminal strip  wrapped in tape  theen I might have been happier.   Still I made a headlight relay harrness at work and at least the lights are as bright as they ever will be.

Don't get me  wrong, there are some lovely fightered Fazers out there - mine  just isn't one  of them LOL.
I'd sa go for it anuts - just do your homework and make a better job than mine!

There's irony for you-
As you're trying to lose the fairing headlight and clocks, I'm working on losing the FZR600 clocks & speedo drive, dreadfull dominator headlights, and fit standard clocks, headlight (if I can ever find one) and fairing!

Hi Mick,

I'd love the screen if you still have it.  I'm about to de-streetfighter mine!

I'm not really near Bolton, but I could get fedex to pick it up if boxed.

Hi,

I know it's a bit late, but do you still have the headlight wiring loom?

Thanks

« on: 04 February 2015, 10:09:11 pm »
Hi,

I have been working in electronics / electricals for more years than I care to thin about, and have been working on harness design for the last 11 years.

DON'T USE SCOTCH LOCKS EXCEPT AS A TEMPORARY FIX.  They work by cutting through the insulation, and water will get in.  If you can't re pin a connector to tap in your wiring then the best way is to cut a window in the insulation then solder and suitably insulate.  (I like the 'SUGRU' stuff, look it up).

Have never heard of those posi things though.  Still, they may be good, I just wouldn't use them on my bike...

Just a quick note to say thanks to Noggy for the fairing.

Sir you are a scholar and a gent!

You were really being more honest than an honest thing when you stated the fairing was rough and ready!  It is infact far far better condition than anything I have seen on fleabay for much much more money.

Once it has had a tickle  with the fine filler and sand I'm sure it will spray up a treat!

Thanks

Larsdad

Or you could PM me as I have just realized....

Hi again,

Yes, I would definitely like the fairing.  My Fazer has been badly streetfightered by a previous owner and it was no fun yesterday on the M62 into a headwind!

At our work we use FedEx everyday for deliveries and collections.  So, if you can put it in a box and put some sort of packing - newspper/bubblewrap etc.  then I can get it picked up from you by Fedex from any address as long as it's a weekday.

Don't know if this helps, and obviously you will need some pennies to cover the packaging.

My profile is set to allow emails from members so if you want to email me direct and I can pay by paypal?  And arrange if you want me to get collected (after payment of course), or if not convenient you to send it to my works address (Larsmum would moan at MORE stuff arriving).

Dan

Hi,

Is the fibreglass boxeye fairing available?  If so how much are you asking?

I work in electronic/electrical engineering.  Design wiring harnesses and embedded controllers for big horrible white things towed by cars.  Please don't use the c word.  I get a nervous tic every time I see one being towed to the coast down a lovely biking road with a 20 car tailback behind it.

My other half thinks it's really funny that I work to put more of the things on the road that really P me off.

Oh well, at least the mini digital dash I'm working on in my spare time will eventually get fitted to my bike.  And that dream of making my own EXUP controller is still alive.

Just wish I had more mechanical skills ... would be great to use a lathe and a welder.
