Agree with Dave48.Bikes are extremely powerful now compared to 'the day'!
I started on a FS1E,then A100,RD200.RD250,RD400.........EXUP,FZS600.
Majority of riders must step up gradually, mainly because of the increase in power and braking,or some will not survive in the jungle!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Luggage rack
« on: 11 May 2012, 10:40:19 am »
The problem with FZS600's is the shape of the back end. Most of the racks available are the sports type
which will only sit on half of the carrier, therefore you would need to make a strong bracket to secure a
topbox.
I tend to use throwovers as they are less hassle, and a sports rack (Yamaha) with a small tail pack.

KAPPA and GIVI make racks and side rails but they are extremely expensive  - £280 plus.Check out the bay,or "for sales".You may be lucky!.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: No front brake?
« on: 07 March 2012, 05:42:46 pm »
Master cylinders very seldom give problems. If your brakes were binding i would have put money on pistons seized or not returning.
The Major is correct. If brakes were binding, all you have to do (at the time) is to touch them quickly with your finger and thumb,or if you have not developed bikers asbestos digits yet, spit on the disc and listen for the sizzle.
Apart from pistons,recheck pads.

I take it,that if your brakes "weren't working", the brake lever was solid and would not move towards the handgrip when pulled???

Yep! Fazerider is correct.NEVER write off an engine until you've exhausted every possibility.
Unsure whether a new seal and pushrod would work, but you have nothing to lose. except a few quid.
Do as he says and keep everything crossed.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Clutch Adjustment
« on: 22 February 2012, 02:56:28 pm »
Gear selector is inside the gearbox, think you mean the gearchange lever.Would affect gearchange slightly if adjuster rod is bent,as the original adjustment would be different due to the damage.Remember all Yams have clunky gearboxes, most people learn to live with it.

Good question Lumpy!
For me  it has to  be CB750 KO K1.Any Indian(so stylish and iconic that Kawasaki tried to copy them).
 As previously stated;any Honda step thru',First fireblade,GPZ900R,Vincent HRD,Bonnie.Fizzy

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Clutch Adjustment
« on: 22 February 2012, 11:57:26 am »
Not entirely correct. To set clutch at lower adjustment (pressure plate).Loosen completely at lever adjustment, remove lower bung, loosen locknut, adjust screw inwards, lightly ,until you feel pressure.then turn back anticlockwise 1/4 of a turn, tighten locknut and then adjust at lever.Make sure you leave some freeplay at the lever end or clutch will slip or worse. This is a very simple straight forward job,and Yamaha will do it no differently than your average biker. Most bikers should be able to adjust it for you in less than 5 mins.

Good call,Keno. In my neck of the woods we seldom suffer from extreme temps.,just rain and more rain, therefore we tend to dismiss carb icing as a cause.Talking to my sis' earlier on and she said they had more snow last night.(Hunts).

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Which oil?
« on: 12 February 2012, 12:31:07 pm »
Well! That's the talk on the street Jake.I haven't used "motorcycle oil" for a long time now.My last courier bike was a CX500.Sold it to another dispatcher with 156k as an emergency 2nd bike. All  my babies have always ran on Castrol GTX.Maybe the key is regular oil/filter changes.Have always done mine every 4 months without fail, with only one siezed bike(CX500 @230k).,but everyone will have their own opinion.Mine is that quality oil is just that.Quality oil!.

Why was the tank replaced?Blocked fuel filter?Blocked air filter.Faulty plug cap?Choke staying on?Water in carbs?TPS?Trial and error i'm afraid.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Sump Plug Thread Size
« on: 11 February 2012, 07:21:07 am »
Had this happen to a mate of mine a few years back,I'd just fitted a new clutch to his CBR600 and left him to finish the job by replacing the oil and filter. He ended up doing the same thing, except he broke a piece off the sump.Fortunately a neighbour worked in Bombardier Aerospace and managed to get it alloy welded for him.Mighty fine job it was too! That's the advantage of living in NI,you can still  get most things done for a pint.
I think what you are talking about is a Helicoil type kit,but to be honest if you over-tightened the sump, then helicoil is an even more difficult job.As far as i'm aware the hole has to be drilled oversize to allow the helicoil insert to fit,This means a bit of minor engineering unless you have a good eye.a steady hand and a good drill with bits.
Either way the sump has to come off.Unless someone on the forum can do it for you,it sounds like a job best left to a pro.It would be cheaper to buy a sump off fleabay.Think i seen one recently for around £25.

Agree with Kebab,It tends to be a Yamaha trait (gearbox clunk.especially 1st in my experience)Previous bike EXUP,one before TDM860 - both had massive clunks when engaging 1st.The FZR was the worst. When starting from cold i had to hold the front brake to stop it lurching forward, and this was with a near full service history and a new clutch with EBC springs.Just a trait with no long term damage, you kinda'get used to it after a while.
When it comes to oil grades 10w/40 is the recommended grade for the UK climate by all manufacturers.I use any good quality oil.Just bought 20l in the asda sale(£10 x 4l).I think it was Castrol Magnatec Semi-synth 10w/40.Lucky i got paid  at the same time the sale was on.

Yo Farjo,Just a thought, but when the Guinness googles are off and reality kicks in it's really too Kawasaki for me.Maybe i should spin a dice,as i would have 6 options then.Really would like to go non-standard - Love the Kenny Roberts yellow, but i'm a massive Sheene fan(how i got into bikes).Maybe Akai scheme ,not sure.Obviously needs looked into a wee bit more.

Someone with more knowledge than i have will answer, but i'm sure i read it somewhere.Problem is i've owned too many bikes over th years and my old brain can only hold a certain amount of data. The problem is just finding the right model ie Gen 1 FZ1 FZR!!!.
