Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Powder coating the engine mount?
« on: 22 December 2023, 08:29:26 pm »
Slightly off topic but this is what I made for my FZS600 to protect the frame, exhaust, oil filter, and engine etc. from the stuff that gets thrown at it from the front wheel. It started off polished aluminium but even on all non freshly chipped roads it soon looked like it had been shot blasted up the middle. Might not be to everyone's taste but it does a good job for me.   :)

FZS600 Fazer / Re: 01 5DMC and 02 5RT4 frames... are they different???
« on: 01 September 2023, 09:05:09 pm »
The brackets on the frame for the fairing sides are in a slightly different position. I fitted a foxeye fairing on an earlier (1998) Fazer 600 and had to make some simple brackets to connect up to the bracket on each side of the frame top rail for the fairing side mountings.

Yes all fair points I guess but I will be 82 by then so unlikely to still be riding!
I'm 80 and i have no plans for giving up riding in the foreseeable future. Of course you never know what cards life might deal you but best to be optimistic and make the most of it while you can.
My FZS600 is a 2000 model and I've had it nineteen years and it's what i use most of the time. It does everything I need so I don't see any need to go for anything different so its actual value is irrelevant.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: HELP - unknown bolts
« on: 06 July 2023, 12:00:26 pm »
They look like 6mm bolts, in which case as fazersharp says possibly engine cover bolts. To me they look a bit short for the sprocket cover but could possibly be from the alternator cover.

Welcome aboard. Good choice of bike. I've a 2001 FZS600 boxeye which I've had for 19 years and never felt the need to change it. Mind you the lights on the boxeye are rubbish so I've just added a couple of spotlights for the rare occasion when I might be in the dark, your 2003 model will be much better in that respect. It's now on 64k miles and never let me down other than a couple of punctures in the rear tyre, strangely both when in France. Good luck with your new bike.

As you can see i like to travel light, but don't always achieve it.

I don't know that this will be of any help be here goes.
When I wanted to fit panniers to my FZS600 I got some Non-Fango panniers cheap only to find I couldn't get any fixing brackets to suite my bike. I ended up making my own and still keeping my Givi topbox arms etc for support at the back. Shown in these photo's.
I decided later these panniers where to big and heavy, probably because I always ended up filling them.
I now have the small Givi panniers and modified my brackets to suite them. Again I couldn't find any Givi brackets available to suite the FZS600 bike.
I now travel lighter on my camping trips etc. and still survive without too much hardship.

Plenty of knowledgeable experience on here, so you've made a good choice, especially about motorbikes and Yamaha Fazers.
Welcome to the group.

Seasons greeting fellow bikers and a happy New Year of safe enjoyable riding.  :)

Very nice looking bike.
I can't improve on the two suggestions already made. Maybe selling the kid not the best option for harmony in the family home, so on balance for your own feel good factor go for the layup option. You know you want to.  :)

I have a similar set of "O" rings which has come in handy on the odd occasion so worth having in the garage. However as often as not a specific job requires a size that's not in the box.

Ingenious. I like it and I like to see what others make and recycle as I often find myself doing that sort of thing.
This is a bead breaker I made a few years ago from what I had lying around. Not my finest creation and somewhat over complicated, but it does the job.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Fan doesn't turn off - any ideas?
« on: 09 April 2022, 10:44:48 am »
On a FZS600 is not normal for the fan to come on under normal riding conditions, usually only in slow traffic on a hot day or stood idling for a period. I have a temperature gauge on mine and it very rarely gets above 85C. The fan is only meant to come on round about 100C.
Your problem does seem strange because pulling the plug on the fan switch should break the circuit, so that suggests a short across the plug or the wires to the plug, however if that was the case the fan would come on as soon as the ignition is turned on even with the engine cold. The other thermo switch for the warning light (with a single wire) is on a separate circuit, although still on live when the ignition is on. Sorry I can offer more help, if I think of anything I'll return.

Welcome to the site. You certainly live in the right area to enjoy your bike (when the weather is kind).

Another simple mistake that you hope not to repeat is parking on the side stand in neutral while pointing down hill.  :o

General / Re: E10 Winter storage. Starting up?
« on: 25 March 2022, 08:10:48 pm »
After a couple of months idle my FZS600 was not as smooth as it normally is for about 20 seconds of running from cold, after a few gentle revs it then settled down to its usual self. I hadn't taken the precautions you did though and it might have had nothing to do with the fuel. I will wait with bated breath to see your own outcome.  :thumbup

FZS600 Fazer / Re: FZS600 Cafe Racer Build
« on: 18 March 2022, 06:35:25 pm »

Looking good and plenty of nice details. I'm sure there are quite a few on here who would be interested in a step by step build thread. Even old hands can generally learn something from what others have done and experienced, both what went well and shall we say the frustrating bits. Well done.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Batteries - Seriously.
« on: 12 March 2022, 05:04:35 pm »
I had a Motobatt battery on my FZS600 Fazer and it performed as expected for 6 years and 19,000 miles of pleasure riding. Not an exceptional length of time but about what I would expect for the price of £49.50 in 2013.
Replaced it with a Lucas battery from a local battery supplier in 2019 and as is to be expected still going strong. Even six years later that cost nearly the same as the Motobatt at £49.99.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Small exhaust split..
« on: 26 January 2022, 04:11:17 pm »
From what you said previously about your welding experience I must say I'm impressed that you managed it without blasting at least some of the exhaust to pieces, especially with it still on the bike. Well done.
Knowing what some of my own efforts have sometimes been like I wouldn't be so cruel as to ask to see a photo of the finished work.  :lol

As BBROWN1664 says the metal is fairly thin. I'm pretty sure there will also be some rust there, which will likely turn into a sparkle display as soon as you start trying to weld it. If you are a proficient welder then you will know better than me, because I am more of the weld and grind variety. If your not an expert and there is good metal there I would recommend you practice on some scrap thin metal first. Of course there is always the other option you suggested of J.B. weld!
Either way good luck with it.

Well done getting the running issues sorted, always very satisfying. That's a seriously worn front wheel bearing, no need to spin it and see if it sounds right I guess.  :eek

Just for interest this is a drawing I did and posted long ago on the sprocket nut topic. I've no information on the manufacturing tolerances but it will effect the clearances to a lesser or greater degree.

I've got four bikes on an Aviva policy. They call it Premier Bike Club on the renewal document. I was with Norwich Union for years and then it was taken over by Aviva. Eighteen years ago I wrote a bike off and they payed out the full price I payed for the bike without quibbling, so I've stuck with them ever since.  Cost me £213 plus £37 for full breakdown recovery to home or destination. Only used the recovery once after a tyre failure in France and they got me and the bike to a garage to have a new tyre fitted. Probably cheaper if you shop around but I'm happy.
