Check for air leaks then check the valve clearances and balance the carburettors

No seals on the bottom of the barrels of the 600.
The service manual was mostly likely a rehashed version of the 400 service manual which has the oil seals and is almost identical to the 600.

General / Re: what boots??
« on: 17 December 2013, 10:39:02 pm »
Daytonas may be the best money can buy, but I never liked them because they lacked the feel through the soles which I prefer. Everyone to their own, but I would suggest try before you buy.
I have always used a thin sole boot as I like the feel I get through them. Last pair were a Goretex lined TCX and a Goretex lined SIDI before that. Wore them everyday in all weathers and my boots usually last about 4 years

Needed a new pair of boots the  Goretex lined TCX ones which were less than 2 years old were damaged in the off with the sorry mate I did not see you a few weeks ago and his insurance had just paid up. The edge of slider went through the leather and nicked the Goretex lining (only realised that when my foot got wet on a 80 mile rain trip) and the ankle support at the side broke.

I tried on quite a few different makes and settled on a pair of Goretex lined SIDIs as they just felt better, they were all around the 300euro mark.

Strangely enough the last TCX boots were size 43 and the last SIDI boots were size 44 but I had to go to 44 on the TCX and 45 on the SIDI to get them to fit and I know my feet have not grown. Glad I did not buy on line. They were very stiff, but have bedded in nicely.

I don't think you can get at it until you retire, which appears to be the case in Ireland. I tried.

They are there just in a different place. Look in between the Carb and the cylinder head and there should be a pipe coming from the float area of the carburettor. The should be one on both sides of the bike. The pipe on the left goes to the left side of the thermostat housing and the one on the right goes to the right side of the radiator below the large coolant pipe.

A lot of mid 80's on bikes are prone to icing these bikes have heating systems (water or electrical) fitted as standard to over come the issue, the Fazer has such a system.  If you look at the carbs you will notice small black pipes going into to even smaller polished elbows this is the heating system.  Due to insufficient anti freeze mixture or poor quality anti freeze these and other small galleries are prone to blocking and therefore stop the system working, if you search the board myself and others have posted how to sort the issue.

Basically you dont need anti freezing additives just fix the heater system.  ;)

I would go the second engine route. It is easier to replace an engine than strip it down and hope it works.  As these bores are nikasil coated you would end up with the problem as before, therefore wasting money. In any case fitting new rings on an old barrel is never good practice due to "stepping" of the bores.
Taking out and putting the engine back in and is best with 2 people but can be done with one person. Just make sure you remove the front engine mounting bracket as the engine cannot be removed without removing it.

« on: 15 December 2013, 11:19:22 pm »
Thanks. I'm 5'9" which you make it to high and would cause to much turbulence. I tried a taller one previously on the 600 and had to take it off whereas my 6ft friend thought it was great and better than standard.

My usual method is to use a left hand drill bit at a slow speed as the heat softens the Loctite and it is will spin out slowly. Start small with a 4mm bit.

Hi fitted this tall screen to my bike this evening just had to mention how pleased I am with it, great fit, quality product £59.99 to my door perfect for me.    The company I got it from is called Dreamscreenuk on ebay really helpful cant fault them or there product   :)

How tall are you? Your height is important to determine if the same screen suits others, myself included.

I did an early morning run thro the B500 Black Forest this year in thick fog and it was raining, you could only see 2 metres in front, scary,  i pulled over and waited for a vehicle to pass than followed its lights.

That is even more scary  :eek

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Clutch replacement question
« on: 12 December 2013, 10:17:19 pm »
Make sure the pressure plats fit on correctly before tightening the bolts. It will only seat properly in a few different positions. If it is wrong pull it out and rotate it until it is right. You will know as it with sit in cleanly on the last friction plate installed.
A lot of fellows have got it wrong including a few on here and ended up breaking the pressure plate trying to tighten the bolts on it.
The bolts only require 6Nm torque and are easily over tightened and strip the threads in the clutch boss. Best to use a torque wrench.
Reusing the old steel plates is fine, and yes, soak them in engine oil for an hour or so first and wipe off the excess before fitting. I used the same EBC kit and it is working well

Call me a Wuss but i took the car tonight. I'll be finished by 3 and a sedate drive home listening to the radio instead of my teeth chattering is a lot more tempting.

Fazer 400 and other models / Re: Odd 1997 FZ400 running issue.
« on: 08 December 2013, 10:48:06 pm »
Drain the carbs as it sounds like water in the bowls. At night the water sinks to the bottom and it is picked up by the pilot jets when trying to start first thing in the morning and as we all know water does not ignite to well. Might be worthwhile next time the tank goes on reserve remove it and drain all the fuel from it and refill it with fresh fuel.
Unfortunately the 400 does not have a prime in the fuel tap making the draining the carbs a little more difficult.
