General / Advice for removal of scratches on headlamp lens please!
« on: 13 September 2021, 12:01:56 pm »
I have restricted access down a narrow path to get my bike in and out and recently caught the headlamp lens on a rough cast concrete post.
The bike is a Tracer 700 and I assume the lens is made of some type of plastic. Tried polishing out scratches with Farecla polishing com pound but this had little effect as scratches are quite deep. Hopefully this won't be an MOT issue?
Any ideas/suggestions welcome. (I have since "bubblewrapped" offending post).

General / VED rip off
« on: 03 October 2017, 08:17:06 am »
Was just checking the rate of duty for my 700 Tracer on the DVLA website and I see that bikes over 600cc are rated at £85 per annum (or more if you pay half yearly or by instalments).
Now I run a small car a Fiat Panda Pop 1.2 with an emissions figure of 119gms C02/km. This is the latest version of the car with the Euro 6 compliant engine & the VED is £30 per annum.
This got me looking at the V5c for the Tracer and I see it doesnt state a C02 figure but seeing as its a 2016 model with fuel injection, catalytic converter etc and with better fuel consumption than the Panda (DVLA quote 54.5mpg for the car), regularly returning 65plus mpg I wonder why bikes are penalised so?

This wasnt the end of this story as I then looked at the VED rates for new cars first registered April 2017 onwards and it appears they have new criteria for calculating duty rates which mean that the motorist once again is going to be mugged by the govt.

There are several different tables for VED based on age of vehicle(date 1st registered) and I accept that older vehicles are going to be more polluting than new ones but there is no fairness in the present system and I assume that they tax us motorcyclists on the basis that they see us as hobby riders or leisure pursuers not as a class of road user that actually helps reduce pollution & congestion.

And finally why all this emphasis on C02 emissions? In my opinion diesel particulates represent a far more immediate & significant threat to our health & well being but of course diesel was "sold" to Joe Public as the way forward a few years ago and now we have 50% of cars diesel powered, many of these being used for short stop-start journeys rather than for their intended purpose-long distance travel.
Crazy world isnt it?

Sad to hear that Tom Petty has died aged 66. His songs form part of the soundtrack to my life. There is no good news coming out of America these days.

General / Happy St Davids Day!
« on: 01 March 2017, 07:54:31 am »
To all Welsh foccers & all of us who ride the wonderful roads of this amazing country.
My only direct Welsh connection is that my parents arranged to have me "dipped" in the font on St Davids Day 1948! (But my ex(from N. Wales) & the love of my life from Swansea meant I spent many happy times in this beautiful land....and still ride their roads whenever possible :lol

« on: 13 January 2017, 06:21:04 am »
Was watching local tv news prog for the midlands last night-anyone would think we were about to experience Siberian whiteout conditions. Looked outside this am to a light sprinkling  of the white stuff-ok its probably going to be icy on the minor roads today but why do they have to act like foretellers of the Apocalypse?!
Suppose all the schools will be closed & it will be gridlock on the roads!

General / Using mobile phone when driving
« on: 22 December 2016, 07:08:35 am »
In spite of the generally accepted belief that using a phone while driving reduces concentration & the recent cases highlighted where drivers have caused fatal accidents due to using these at the wheel, I still see drivers daily using their phones.
There doesnt seem any point in government legislation that is practically unenforceable due to cut backs in police funding on the roads.
How about an automatic driving ban instead of some piddling fine or,at the very least, 11 points on licence.
As for the so-called professional drivers, lorry, coach, bus, van users-should be an automatic ban & compulsory retest
IMO phone use at wheel just as dangerous as drink/drug driving.

General / If you have to ask.....you wouldnt understand!
« on: 22 December 2016, 06:55:26 am »
What is it that keeps us riding our beloved bikes?
No-one else in my family rides apart from one son who is a lifelong cyclist & a son-in-law in Cornwall who has a restored Vespa 90 which occasionally gets ridden round the Lizard.
My 2 sisters keep asking when I am going to stop(the implication being that they think its time I acted my age-whatever that means!)
My one granddaughter tells me Im not like her other grandad(who incidentally has never even driven a cage)-my reply was along the lines of"It would be a shame to have 2 normal grandads when you can have one who conforms & one like me". She now wants to know when she can ride with me!
I first rode a PTW age 14 & over 50 years later the magic has always been there.
I explained to a non-riding friend that driving a car is like watching TV BUT riding a bike is being part of whats going on around us..she didnt really understand but turned down the offer of a pillion ride.
Its dark cold & miserable outside but have some amazing biking memories this year to sustain me until the days lengthen.

General / Repairing cracks/splits in front Boxeye fairing
« on: 27 September 2016, 09:51:55 am »
Hi foccers-some advice please.
Have done all the mechanical jobs on the "Red Reviver" since Feb except valve clearances which will be done next week by my local friendly garage-all the exhaust valves require reshimming.
Over the next few months I want to concentrate on the cosmetics and the main area of concern are the cracks alongside front indicators where bike has been dropped in past ownership. There has been a bit of a bodge up repair done by previous owner which involves mastic & thick black plastic tape. I would like to effect a proper repair even if it means having the nose cone repainted afterwards-It is the vivid red cocktail colour scheme so will involve 3 separate colours & stickers.
Any suggestions/recommendations. I realise a professional job wont be cheap. Over to you guys.

General / Height of Naff awards 2016
« on: 29 August 2016, 04:42:58 pm »
Reading darssis post on "what have you done with your 600 Fazer today" concerning blacked out indicators on cars got me thinking  there must be plenty of really naff add-ons, accessories etc adorning cages.
My favourite for starters is the ever so desperately trying to spell a name/word by illegally positioning characters on registration plates. I know theres some really nice plates out there but some I see are really sad and to think people pay money for them! :lol
Im sure you fellow foccers can come up with plenty!

General / Carole Cash!
« on: 04 August 2016, 03:32:59 am »
Now we all know about insurance companies & the way they treat their customers but thought I would add my latest little experience with Carole Nash.
Now being no "spring chicken" but with a decent amount of ncb  (over 10 years on each)both on bike & car I recently had to phone to increase my annual mileage limit from 8 to 12 thousand on car due to extra round trips to Cornwall to visit aged mother ( She passed away at the beginning of May).
Was charged £40 admin fee plus £9 changeover. Now I dont drive anything exotic just a 15 plate Fiat Panda (1242cc) with less power than the Fazer.
My conversation went along the lines of "Well youve got me over a barrel since I am obliged to report any/all changes. I will pay this but will not have any future dealings with you and moreover will advise everyone to be aware that from 1st annual renewal to be ready for the big rip-off & SWITCH PROVIDER!
In all my time with CN i have only ever claimed for a scratched windscreen that would have been an MOT failure.
I switched to Bennetts in February when I got the latest Fazer & got full cover with all the extras for £115 per annum which I dont think is unreasonable living in the "second city".
Customer Loyalty is a THING OF THE PAST for me now & I include things like Broadband/Phone/ TV providers.
What I cant understand & maybe someone on here can explain is why these robbing b******s dont realise that good drivers/riders who dont get involved in claims procedures are profitable business for them ie they get our cash & dont have to fork out any.
Last time I hang one of their bloody calendars up. SO BE WARNED.

General / Fazer foray into Wales
« on: 25 July 2016, 07:55:21 am »
Having finally got the Red Reviver back in one piece last Tuesday with carbs nicely balanced, i had a short ride in the searing heat that was Wednesday-covered about 60 miles before heading for home & cold drinks, ice cream etc.
Saturday I met friend on his S****i GS 500 on A5/A41 junction near M54(Cosford). He came cross country from Burton on Trent & I went up from S. Bham.
We rode to Shrewsbury, stopped for coffee & fuel, chat to fellow bikers on way to Llangollen BikeFest. Arrived @ said venue & had good look round-lots to see both old & new. Lunchtime came & we rode up the Horseshoe Pass to the Ponderosa Cafe for sustenance, chatted to fellow OAP FZS600S owner who said he loved his bike (same age as mine) except for the vibration period @ 6000rpm-I said "I take it you mean in the lower gears as 6000 in 6th would equate to some speed on your twisty roads!
Asked mate if he wanted to see anything/ride anywhere else so we completed the Pass called into Ruthin & then spotted the sign for A494 to Lake Bala (Llyn Tegid).
Bala was pleasant with fresh breeze from water. Rode down side of lake to Llanuwychlynn & picked up the single track road known as the Path of the Cross (Bwlch y Groes). first photo taken half way up looking down onto Cwm Cynelwyd. This mountain pass is the highest in N. Wales & formed part of the Pilgrims Way from NE Wales to St Davids cathedral in Pembrokeshire-travelled since Mediaeval times.
2nd photo @ top with amazing views. The descent was steep to put it mildly (average gradient 1 in 4). this hill was used by Midland car & bike testers back in the 30s to evaluate cars & bikes. Also used as part of the ISDT course & by masochistic cyclists of whom we saw several!!
Down to Dinas Mawddy then blast down to Caersws & Newtown before heading on to Shrewsbury where we went our separate ways,my pal rode down to Telford for A5 to Cannock whilst I took the A458 to Much Wenlock,Bridgnorth & Stourbridge. 250 miles and the Fazer performed like a goodun :lol

FZS600 Fazer / Help please! Fazer FZS 600 coil wiring
« on: 07 July 2016, 04:05:49 pm »
The Red Reviver is about to be reassembled and, like a fool that I am, I disconnected the 4 coloured wires to the coils without making a note of which went where.
The wires are paired out of the main loom & I just need to know which way round they go.
Nearside(left side) coil has Red/Black & Orange wires and Rightside coil has Red/Black & grey wires. Forgot to take picture-its an age-thing! :eek :lol

FZS600 Fazer / a "senior moment"!
« on: 30 June 2016, 05:49:13 pm »
Decided to replace the carb to cylinder head rubber thingies as the originals (15 yrs old) were badly cracked. Stripped tank, battery etc for access & found I was struggling so phoned friend who came over to lend an extra pair of hands yesterday am. Before he arrived I  positioned one of the metal clamps on the new rubber piece but had FORGOTTEN TO PLUG THE HOLE -you can guess what happened-the screw flew out of the clamp before I could start to tighten and the small brass spacer collar disappeared into the void! I know its prob resting on top of no 2 piston as we checked everywhere and while we found the screw resting under the starter motor there is no sign of the collar anywhere-either in depths of crankcase or near waterpump & sprocket cover, nor did it end up anywhere on floor... Sods law-when I removed the rubber piece & peered into the inlet port I noticed both valves open on this cylinder !
Now my question is this: Will I be ok to SLOWLY rotate the crankshaft to align timing marks before removing head-ie will there be enough clearance between top of piston & cyl head or should I just mark existing position of cams, timing gear? I tried putting a soft flexible piece of plastic with grease on tip down spark plug hole but I guess with the forward cant of engine its prob lying towards exhaust side of piston. ALL ADVICE WELCOME for this silly old foccer! :eek

FZS600 Fazer / Aftermarket radiator FZS 600
« on: 20 June 2016, 09:06:52 am »
Does anyone have experience of these?
I see that there are numerous "pattern" radiators on ebay-many from Chinese suppliers often retailing around the £50-£60 mark. Was just wondering what the quality of these is like?.
My own rad is 15 yrs old & has significant corrosion. Am intending to strip the entire cooling system over winter & replace hoses, clips as necessary.
Any thoughts fellow foccers?

General / Money Saving Ideas?
« on: 11 March 2016, 07:32:21 am »
I get Martin Lewis money saving tips/ideas regularly & it got me thinking along the lines of what can we save keeping our Fazers running?

Heres a couple for starters:

Some Yamaha genuine parts ( eg 12mm sprocket nut/lockwasher @ £2-44 OFFICIAL PRICE) seem excellent value for money while some ebay traders ask much more than this. HOWEVER... I asked Yamaha dealer cost of 2 x brake bleed nipples & was quoted £16! :eek . I ordered 2 stainless steel nipples c/w rubber caps from "Powerhouse Automotive"based in Chesterfield cost... £7-80 posted & received next day. I highly recommend their brake overhaul kits which come with useful detailed instructions for anyone new to this work. For mechanical numpties they over a postal caliper overhaul service.

While stripping rear suspension linkage for inspection/cleaning/regreasing I discovered scoring of spacer tube caused by seizure of the 2 needle roller bearings (the ones fitted to base of  swingarm. Spacer tube was only available from Yamaha-cost £14-73 but what they asked for the caged needle roller bearings was ridiculous -something like £25 each! "Marksman" of Guildford came to the rescue supplying 4 for £46-74 (inc £2-95 P&P).
Sparkplugs--Do NOT BUY from Halfords/Main Dealers. Ause online suppliers for considerable savings..

OVER TO YOU LOT :lol

FZS600 Fazer / Front Sprocket Nut & Lockwasher Part Nos
« on: 10 February 2016, 10:30:40 am »
Recently ordered the 12mm nut & tab washer upgrade  kit from my local dealer.
The combined kit carries the Yamaha part no 90891-10124 & retails @ £2-44.
However the kit contained the 2 individually wrapped items and the respective part nos are:
12mm Nut   part no. 90179-18006
Tab washer    "   "     90215-21290
I only mention this because the modification kit & the 12mm nut are not on the normal microfiche pages but if you quote the part nos above they can be located & obtained.

FZS600 Fazer / Havent been posting for a while!
« on: 13 January 2016, 09:20:48 am »
The story so far.... Last March I bought an MT-07ABS which was great fun but to help fund this had to let "Rhondda Red" my 600 Foxeye go to a new home.
In the summer I got my local friendly car MOT man to check the car over & I worked out what I might have to spend in the next 12 months.Meantime I found a Fiat main dealer with a batch of pre-registered 15 plate Pandas so struck a deal, using my approaching 6 year old Panda as part-ex. However I then had to make a decision to sell the MT-07. (My family thought I had finally decided to hang up the Shoei & was at last"growing up"!) They dont understand that some addiction cant be cured!.
So 5 months in the doldrums and didnt even want to visit the local bike shops-Last week I finally cracked and yesterday morning took delivery of a 2001  FZS600S in red black & silver which came with new MOT, past receipts & replacement staainless headers/collector box, new studs & nuts & braided hoses, rear hugger & front fender extender & stainless rad guard -all for under a grand!
So 2 questions please.....
1) Any recommendations for insurance/--not sure I want to go back to Carole Nash. Want 3PFT/Comp & breakdown cover-have a good 11 years NCD.
2) Any suggestions for a name----no, not "slow red" but something catchy :lol

As you can see from my new avatar I no longer own Rhondda Red-unfortunately my pension wont support me two bikes & two cats!
Was driving locally yesterday afternoon, stopped at traffic lights & a red Foxeye pulled alongside. Wound down window & said to the young guy riding-"Hey that was my bike til a month ago-how are you liking it?"  "Very much" he said as the lights changed & he blew me into the weeds!
It was a  bit like seeing an old flame---regrets? :'( --sure but it was looking good and being ridden -hope he has as much pleasure from it as I did.

Please may I stay on the FazerForum---ive tried the MT-07/09 one & its not in the same league---I still love Fazers-ive owned 3 & who knows may do so again!
